Fresh or woody is the question I'm asked most about hosting a dinner. Fresh is the safer answer at the table; woody is the warmer answer after it. And the honest truth is that a frequent host is happiest owning both — because a scent that frames the meal should never compete with the food.
The short version
Short answer: Fresh is the safest dinner-table choice; woody suits winter and after-dinner. Keep either away from the table and restrained during the meal.
The pick: Sukoon ₹1,799 + a fresh

Fresh and woody aren't rivals so much as two moods for two moments. A fresh scent — white tea, green leaves, citrus — reads as clean, bright, awake. It sits lightly in the air and, crucially, it behaves at the dinner table: it never argues with what's on the plate. A woody scent — cedar, pine, a warm floral-woody accord — reads as grounded, cosy, enveloping. It's gorgeous on a cold evening and after the meal, but it's heavier, which means placement and timing matter far more. Here's how I decide.

How to decide in one minute
Fresh or woody for your dinner?
1. Scenting the actual dining table? Choose fresh. It's the only safe answer over food.
2. Winter, or a cosy intimate evening? A woody-warm style on a console away from the table adds welcome depth.
3. Want scent for coffee and dessert? That's the woody moment — bring it back once the plates are cleared.
4. Humid coastal night? Lean fresh, or go waterless — heavy woody notes read damp in already-humid air.
5. Can't choose? Own both. Fresh for arrival and the meal, woody for after. It's two ₹299 bottles and one Sukoon.
Both moods, one shelf
Hotel Collection fragrance ₹299
Water-based interpretations of the world's finest hotels. Pick a fresh style (Westin, 1 Hotels or Four Seasons-inspired) for the table and a warm Ritz-Carlton-inspired style for after dinner. At ₹299 a bottle, owning both is the easiest upgrade a host can make. Refills ₹999.
The quiet woody layer
Mountain Breeze reed from ₹849
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar in an alcohol-free reed diffuser — no power, no mist, no added humidity. Set it on a sideboard for a grounding woody note that layers under a fresh Sukoon scent, or carries a winter dinner on its own. A safe, passive way to add wood.
The honest caveat sits mostly on the woody side. Warm, deep scents are lovely but they carry further and linger longer, so they're the ones most likely to creep onto the plate if you're careless. Keep any woody diffuser off the table, run it before guests arrive, and turn it down during the meal. And remember the ultrasonic Sukoon adds a little humidity — fine in a dry Delhi winter, worth running in short sessions in a humid Mumbai monsoon. If you host long dinners often in a coastal city and want a deeper scent that stays crisp rather than damp, the waterless Vaayu (₹11,999) is the cleaner way to run woody for hours.
Fresh is what your guests eat inside; woody is what they linger in afterwards.

Frequently asked
Is fresh or woody fragrance better for a dinner party?
Fresh is the safer choice at the table because clean, light styles never compete with food. From the SOSA Hotel Collection (₹299), the Westin-inspired white-tea, 1 Hotels-inspired green-citrus and Four Seasons-inspired citrus are the food-friendly picks. Woody styles are warmer and cosier, better suited to winter, after-dinner coffee, or a living room away from the food. Many hosts own one fresh and one woody bottle and switch depending on the season and the moment.
When should I choose a woody fragrance for dinner?
Choose woody when the evening wants warmth: a winter dinner, a cosy intimate table, or the after-dinner stretch with coffee and dessert. A warm woody style such as the Ritz-Carlton-inspired one, or a Mountain Breeze pine-sage-cedar reed as a quiet layer, gives a grounded, enveloping feel. Keep it away from the table and dialled down during the main course, since woody scents are heavier than fresh ones.
Will a woody scent clash with the food?
It can if it is too strong or too close to the table. Woody and warm styles are richer than fresh ones, so place the diffuser on a console away from the plates, run it before guests arrive, and turn it low or off during the meal. Used this way it frames the evening rather than competing with it. If you want zero risk at the table, run a fresh style during dinner and save the woody one for after.
Can I use both fresh and woody in one dinner?
Yes, and it is my favourite approach. Run a fresh style on arrival and through the meal so it never competes with the food, then switch to a warm woody style for coffee and dessert. Two Hotel Collection bottles (₹299 each) in one Sukoon (₹1,799) covers it — just rinse the tank when you swap. Some hosts keep a second Sukoon so they never have to change the bottle mid-evening.
Does a woody ultrasonic scent feel heavy in humid weather?
It can, because an ultrasonic diffuser adds a little humidity and warm woody notes read heavier in already-damp coastal air. Run shorter sessions during monsoon, or choose a fresh style for humid months. If you host long dinners often in a humid city and want a deeper scent that stays crisp, the waterless Vaayu (₹11,999) nebulises oil with no added moisture and keeps woody notes clean rather than damp.
