Why long drives trigger the headache
A short hop to the shops rarely gives anyone a headache. A four-hour highway run does, and the conditions are why. On a long drive the cabin is sealed, the AC is usually set to recirculate the same air, and the dashboard climbs past sixty degrees in the sun. That combination is a small, hot, closed box - the worst possible place to spray a solvent and then breathe it for hours.
What is actually happening
Most cheap car sprays are mostly alcohol (ethanol or isopropyl alcohol) carrying a little fragrance oil. The alcohol is there to dissolve the oil and to throw it fast.
