Honestly, not on its own.
An ultrasonic diffuser is a per-room device, and an open plan is not a room — its mist has limited throw, the air moves freely, and any height thins the scent before it travels. For an open span, the waterless
Vaayu is the tool.
Quick answers — read this first
Can an ultrasonic diffuser fill an open plan? No — not evenly. It scents strongly near the machine and fades across the span. An open volume needs the
Vaayu (₹11,999).
So where does the Sukoon shine? In enclosed rooms up to ~250 sq ft — a bedroom, a study, a snug off the open area. That's its home ground.
Will more drops help? No. Over-dosing an ultrasonic only strengthens the pocket beside it; the far corners stay empty.
The short answer
Short answer: An ultrasonic diffuser like the
Sukoon can't evenly scent an open-plan space — its cool mist has limited throw and thins across an open, often high-ceilinged volume; for that you want the waterless cold-air
Vaayu (₹11,999), keeping ultrasonic units for the enclosed rooms.
The pick: the
SOSA Sukoon (₹1,799) ultrasonic diffuser plus a
Hotel Collection scent (from ₹299) is the hotel-at-home starter; a
Boond (₹799) suits a small room or desk, and for a large, open-plan or high-humidity space the waterless
Vaayu (₹11,999) adds no moisture.

Straight answer
Can an ultrasonic diffuser handle an open-plan space?
1. Understand the mechanism. Ultrasonic diffusers lift a dense, cool micro-mist that settles quickly — wonderful in a closed room, poor at travelling.
2. Check for walls. If sofa, dining and kitchen share unbroken air, no single ultrasonic unit will reach all three evenly.
3. Resist the over-dose reflex. Adding drops makes the near zone heavier, not the far zone scented.
4. Switch dispersal method for the open volume. The waterless
Vaayu atomises a dry, fine scent that a room's currents carry across the span.
5. Keep ultrasonic where it wins. Put a
Sukoon in each enclosed room — that's still the best per-room hotel effect there is.

One line: an ultrasonic can't fill an open plan — use the
Vaayu (₹11,999) for the span, a
Sukoon (₹1,799) for enclosed rooms.
Why ultrasonic and open plans don't match
1
LIMITED THROW
The mist settles before it travels
Sukoon · the diffuser₹1,799 Ultrasonic mist is essentially cool, scented water vapour — heavier and lazier than the dry cloud a nebuliser or cold-air machine makes. It rises a little, drifts a little, and falls within a few feet. In a closed room the walls trap and recirculate it, so the whole space fills. In an open plan there are no walls to hold it, so it simply disperses.
Throw is the exact property an open space demands and ultrasonic lacks.
Tip: Watch the visible mist plume — where it stops is roughly where the scent stops.
2
MOVING AIR
Open air carries scent away, not around
Vaayu · large room₹11,999 Open plans breathe. Air conditioning, ceiling fans, the pull between a kitchen and a balcony — all of it moves air through the space rather than settling it. A gentle ultrasonic plume is easily swept aside and diluted by these currents. A cold-air machine works
with that movement, riding the same currents to spread scent; the Vaayu's fine dry atomisation is built for exactly this open, moving-air condition.
Tip: The more the air moves, the more you need throw — and the less an ultrasonic gives you.

THE VERDICT
Per-room device meets a no-walls space
Hotel Collection scentsFrom ₹299 There's no shame in the limit — the
Sukoon is one of the best per-room diffusers you can buy, and in a bedroom or study it's flawless. It's just being asked to do a job it was never designed for. Match it to enclosed rooms and it delights; ask it to fill an open plan and it disappoints. The honest fix is the
Vaayu for the open volume.

The hotel-at-home kit: one diffuser, seven scents, one small room option
The SOSA principle
A diffuser doesn't fail an open plan; it's simply the wrong instrument for a volume it was never scaled to.
Scale the tool to the air, not the ambition.

Ask a per-room diffuser to fill a no-walls space and it will do exactly what it was built to do — scent a room. There just isn't one.

Sizes & how to use: every scent comes as 15ml (₹299, to try), 100ml (₹999, the value bottle) or 300ml (₹1,799, best per-ml); the 15ml
Pack of 7 (₹1,799) is the whole wardrobe. Add just 3-6 drops to the Sukoon's water tank and adjust to taste - a little goes a long way - and rinse the tank when you switch scents so each stays true. These are water-based, ultrasonic-safe fragrances made for SOSA diffusers; do not substitute raw essential or carrier oils, which can clog the misting plate. The scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by (not affiliated with) the named hotels. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
When the room is big or open-plan SOSA Vaayu · Waterless Cold-Air ₹11,999 The Sukoon is perfect for a bedroom or a normal living room; for a large, open-plan or high-ceilinged space - or if you want zero added humidity in already-humid coastal air - step up to the waterless Vaayu (up to 1000m³, app + timers). For a whole home, the ducted Aangan (₹25,999) carries one signature through every room. Compare Sukoon vs Vaayu →

Frequently asked questions
Is the Sukoon a bad diffuser then?
Not at all — it's excellent within an enclosed room up to ~200–250 sq ft. The point is only that an open plan isn't a room. Matched to a bedroom or study, a
Sukoon is one of the best hotel-at-home tools there is.
What actually is an open-plan space for scenting?
Any layout where the living, dining and often kitchen share one continuous body of air with no dividing walls or doors. You have to scent the whole volume at once, which is a job for cold-air throw, not ultrasonic mist.
Could a very large Sukoon exist that handles it?
Tank size isn't the constraint — throw is. Even a bigger ultrasonic tank would still produce low-energy mist that settles nearby. The dispersal method has to change, which is why the waterless
Vaayu is the answer, not a bigger Sukoon.
What if my 'open plan' is really quite small?
If it's a compact, contained area under ~250 sq ft with a normal ceiling and little airflow, a single
Sukoon placed centrally may cope. The moment it's genuinely open and airy, size up to the Vaayu.
Can I combine both?
Yes, and it's the recommended setup — a
Vaayu for the open living-dining plus
Sukoons in the enclosed bedrooms, each with its own Hotel Collection scent.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the technique applies to any brand's ultrasonic system.
Facts verified August 2026: An ultrasonic diffuser disperses a water-based fragrance as a cool micro-mist, scenting a room without heat or flame and adding a little humidity. Great hotels use commercial HVAC scenting to create a signature smell; at home the same effect comes from a diffuser plus a hotel-inspired blend. SOSA Sukoon is a 500ml ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser with a 7-colour mood light (₹1,799); Boond is a 300ml mini ultrasonic diffuser (₹799); both run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. The Hotel Collection comes in seven scents (Ritz-Carlton, Westin, 1 Hotels, St. Regis, Shangri-La, Four Seasons and W Hotels styles) in 15ml (₹299), 100ml (₹999) and 300ml (₹1,799), plus 15ml Pack of 7 (₹1,799); dose 3-6 drops per tank, use SOSA diffuser fragrance only (not raw essential/carrier oils), and rinse between scents. For large, open-plan or high-humidity spaces the waterless SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³) adds no humidity; the Aangan (₹25,999) is a whole-home HVAC system. The scents are SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
