What buyers ask us about hotel and spa scents
Including the questions where the answer is "we do not make that" and "you cannot put that on your skin"
"I want to smell like a luxury hotel lobby. What do I buy?"
Usually a clean white musk with soft woods. In our range that is Adaa. What we will not do is tell you it reproduces any particular hotel, because it does not and we have no authorisation to try.
Hotel-inspired scent · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Can I wear my reed diffuser oil as a perfume?"
No. Reed oil is assessed for evaporation from a reed in a room, not for leave-on skin application. They are different use cases with different exposure, and we will not sell you one as the other.
Home against skin · answered by Sonal Sahani
"You make a lavender reed diffuser. Do you make a lavender attar?"
No. Evening Calm is Himalayan lavender and chamomile for a room. We do not make a lavender attar, and rather than steer you to something that is not lavender, we will tell you that plainly.
What we do not make · answered by Sonal Sahani
"I want white tea and clean hotel linen on my skin."
We do not make that as an attar. Adaa is the closest thing we have, and it is citrus and jasmine sambac over white musk rather than a linen accord. If linen is the point, we are not your brand for it.
Clean linen · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Which hotel is the Hotel Collection based on?"
It is our own interpretation of a style of hospitality scenting. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel group, and it is an ultrasonic diffuser fragrance for rooms rather than a skin product.
Independence · answered by Sonal Sahani
"Will it last all day like my spray?"
We do not publish hour figures for any fragrance, because how long one seems to last depends on your skin, the weather and how quickly you stop noticing it. An oil-carried attar sits close rather than projecting.

Yes, and the distinction between the two is worth understanding properly, because it separates a legitimate product from a claim nobody should be making. A fragrance family is public property. A hotel group's commissioned composition is not, and a brand offering to reproduce one is telling you something about itself.
Quick answers — read this first
What is a proprietary hotel scent? A composition commissioned by a hospitality group from a fragrance house, usually under an exclusivity arrangement, often protected as a trade secret and associated with trademarks. It is not sold as a personal fragrance to anybody.

So what can a brand legitimately do? Work in the same fragrance family and say so. Families are public: clean white musk with soft woods is a style, not anybody's property. What a brand cannot legitimately do is claim to reproduce, match or duplicate a specific group's scent.

How do I spot the difference? A legitimate claim describes a style or an atmosphere. A problematic one names a group and promises equivalence. The second is a claim about somebody else's property, and the brand making it usually has no authorisation.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes. A fragrance family is public property and a commissioned hotel composition is not. A legitimate brand works in the family and describes a style; a problematic one names a group and promises equivalence. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel group and makes no reproduction claim.
The honest limit: no fragrance we sell reproduces any hotel, spa, resort or retail brand's proprietary scent, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any of them. Where we do not make a family, we say so rather than recommending something adjacent.
Home is not skin: reed diffuser oil and the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance are assessed for room use and are not assessed or sold for application to skin. Attars and solid perfumes are the skin products.
Where a hotel-style scent actually lives - and what it is assessed forUltrasonic mist diffuser - water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, room useReed diffuser - its own alcohol-free reed oil, room useAttar or solid perfume - assessed for leave-on skinThe three do not interchangeA scent family can cross between them. A formulation cannot, because the exposure is different.
You can carry a scent family from a room to your skin. You cannot carry a formulation, because a product assessed for evaporating in a room has not been assessed for sitting on you. That distinction is the whole of this guide.
Straight answer
Can an attar evoke a hotel lobby without copying the hotel's scent?
Yes, and the two activities are genuinely different. A fragrance family is public. Clean white musk with soft woods and transparent florals is a style, developed across the industry over decades, and nobody owns it. Working in that family and saying so is ordinary, honest perfumery. A hotel group's signature is not public. It is typically a composition commissioned from a fragrance house under an exclusivity arrangement, treated as a trade secret, and associated with the group's trademarks. It is not sold as personal fragrance to anybody, and a brand offering you a reproduction either does not have it or should not be offering it. So the test is in the wording. A legitimate claim describes a style: clean, hospitality-inspired, in the family of ambient luxury scenting. A problematic claim names a group and promises equivalence, which is a claim about somebody else's property made by somebody with no authorisation. Our position: SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel, hospitality, wellness or fashion group, and makes no claim to reproduce any brand's proprietary fragrance. We work in the family and we name the family. Adaa is ₹379 at 3ml. +91 96192 18531.
The family is public and the composition is not. Work in the first, do not claim the second.
If the brief is clean, quiet and expensive-feeling, the honest starting point in our range is Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml. If it is polished woods, Nawaab at ₹399.

What a proprietary hotel scent actually is

It is worth knowing how hospitality scenting is actually commissioned, because the structure explains why reproduction claims are so hard to take seriously. A group decides it wants a signature, briefs a fragrance house, and goes through a development process that may take months and several rounds. The resulting composition is usually exclusive to that group for a defined period or territory, the formula sits with the fragrance house as confidential information, and the scent becomes associated with the group's identity in the same way a logo or an interior style does. Several groups have registered trademarks around their scent programmes. None of this is sold in 3ml bottles. So when a brand offers you a reproduction, there are only a few possibilities, and none of them is that they have the formula. They may have attempted a reconstruction by nose, which is guesswork dressed as equivalence. They may be using the name purely to attract search traffic while selling something unrelated. Or they may genuinely believe their product is similar, which is sincere and still not a basis for the claim. Meanwhile the legitimate version of this business is straightforward and quite satisfying to do properly: identify the family, build well within it, and describe it accurately. A customer who wants to smell clean, quiet and expensive gets exactly that, and nobody has to pretend. The only thing lost is the search traffic that a brand name would have captured, which is a commercial cost rather than a creative one, and it is a cost worth paying.

1
How a signature is commissioned
Exclusive, confidential, and not sold in 3ml
A group briefs a fragrance house, development runs for months, and the result is usually exclusive for a defined period or territory with the formula held as confidential information. Several groups have registered trademarks around their scent programmes. None of this reaches a personal fragrance shelf, which is why a reproduction offer has no plausible source.
Tip: A brand with the formula would be in breach of somebody's agreement. A brand without it is guessing. There is no third option.
2
The family is nobody's property
Which is what makes the honest version possible
Clean white musk with soft woods and transparent florals is a style the whole industry developed, and working in it is ordinary perfumery. The honest version of this business is to identify the family, build well within it, and describe it accurately. The customer who wants to smell clean and expensive gets exactly that, and nobody has to pretend.
3
The test is in the wording
A style described, or a group named
A legitimate claim describes a style or an atmosphere. A problematic one names a group and promises equivalence. If a product page tells you it matches, duplicates or is the same as a named hotel's scent, that is a claim about somebody else's property made without authorisation, and it tells you how the brand handles claims generally.
Tip: The only thing a brand loses by refusing is search traffic. That is a commercial cost, not a creative one.
The SOSA principle
A brand with a hotel's actual formula would be in breach of somebody's agreement. A brand without it is guessing. There is no third possibility, which makes the offer easy to evaluate.
The honest version costs a brand the search traffic a famous name would have captured, and nothing else.

What a legitimate inspired-by claim looks like

What a legitimate inspired-by claim looks like in practice, including ours. It names the family rather than a group: clean musk with soft woods. It describes the atmosphere rather than promising equivalence. It states independence plainly. And it tells you where the translation breaks down, which for an attar is the airiness, since a room is scented continuously and diluted into moving air while your wrist is neither. Our clean-family answer is Adaa at ₹379, with a white musk accord under bergamot, green cardamom and transparent jasmine sambac. Our own Hotel Collection is a water-based ultrasonic diffuser fragrance for rooms, is our own interpretation of a hospitality style, and is not assessed for skin.

The SOSA scent edit
Legitimate against problematic, in the wording
Scent Why it suits the mood
"In the clean musk and soft woods family" Legitimate. Describes a public style that the industry developed, and makes no claim about anybody's property
"Hospitality-inspired, our own interpretation" Legitimate, provided independence is stated and no specific group is named as the source or the target
"Matches the scent of [named group]" Problematic. A claim about somebody else's commissioned, confidential composition, made without authorisation
"The same as what you smelled at [named hotel]" Problematic and also unverifiable, since nobody outside the arrangement has the composition to compare against

For how to tell the two apart as a buyer, hotel-inspired against authorised to reproduce a hotel's scent is the page devoted to exactly that question. For the families you can legitimately shop for, which attar fragrance families recreate a luxury hotel lobby. What SOSA actually makes

Every SOSA attar and solid perfume is alcohol-free and assessed for leave-on skin application. Our reed diffusers and the Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance are home products and are not assessed for skin. Here is the range with the honest description of each, including the families we do not make at all.

What we actually make, and what each one is for
One genuinely clean attar, two woody ones, two musk-based solids, and a room fragrance that is not for skin
Product Where it sits What it is, honestly From
Adaa attar 3ml The clean one · closest to a hotel lobby Bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and a white musk accord. The only genuinely clean, airy composition in our attar range, and the honest answer to most hotel-inspired requests ₹379
Nawaab attar 3ml Polished woods · expensive interiors White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron. For wooden-interior and quiet-luxury requests rather than clean-linen ones ₹399
Ameeri attar 3ml Warm sandalwood · heritage hospitality Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, saffron and soft oudh. Rose inside a warm resinous structure, closest to a grand Indian hotel atmosphere ₹385
Velour solid 15g White musk base · skin-close Toasted almond and whipped cream over a white musk base. Soft and skin-close, and sweeter than a hotel-clean scent, which we would rather say than imply ₹479
Sterling solid 15g Powdered musk · refined Almond nougat and white amber over powdered musk. Refined and velvety, and genuinely powdery, so not for anyone who has told us they dislike powder ₹469
Hotel Collection 15ml Rooms only · never skin Water-based fragrance for ultrasonic mist diffusers. Our own interpretation of hospitality scenting, for air rather than for people ₹299

Attars come in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml: Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149; Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165; Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179; Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199; the three-attar trio ₹1,055 / ₹1,859 / ₹3,189 against ₹1,173 / ₹2,063 / ₹3,543 bought singly. Solid body perfumes are 15g, alcohol-free, from ₹459. What we do not make as a skin fragrance: white tea, clean linen or cotton musk, lavender, vetiver, cedarwood, aquatic or marine, and pine. Several of those exist in our home range and are not assessed for skin. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

"I want to smell like a five-star hotel" is one of my favourite things a customer can say, because it tells me far more than a note list would. It tells me you want clean rather than sweet, quiet rather than loud, and expensive-feeling rather than obviously perfumed. That is a brief I can work with.

It also comes with two things I have to be straight with you about. The first is that I cannot sell you a hotel's scent. Those are proprietary compositions made for specific groups, and anybody offering you a reproduction is either guessing or doing something they should not. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel group. What I can do is work in the same fragrance families and say so honestly.

The second is harder on my own sales. Our home fragrances are not for your skin. Reed oil is assessed for evaporating from a reed in a room. The Hotel Collection is a water-based fragrance for an ultrasonic mist diffuser. Neither has been assessed for leave-on application to a person, and the exposure is completely different. I will not sell you one as the other, however much you like how it smells in your hallway.

And there are things we simply do not make. No lavender attar. No vetiver attar. No white tea, no clean linen, no cedarwood, no aquatic. Several of those scents live in our reed diffusers and stay there. If that is what you came for, I would rather tell you than sell you something adjacent and hope you do not notice. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hotel's proprietary scent?
A composition commissioned by a hospitality group from a fragrance house, usually under an exclusivity arrangement, held as confidential information and often associated with the group's trademarks. It is not sold as a personal fragrance to anybody.
Can a brand legitimately evoke that style?
Yes. A fragrance family is public property: clean white musk with soft woods and transparent florals is a style the whole industry developed, and working in it and saying so is ordinary perfumery. What a brand cannot do is claim to reproduce a specific group's scent.
How do I spot a problematic claim?
By the wording. A legitimate claim describes a style or an atmosphere. A problematic one names a group and promises equivalence, which is a claim about somebody else's property made without authorisation, and it tells you how that brand handles claims generally.
Could a brand actually have the formula?
Realistically no. A brand with it would be in breach of somebody's agreement, and a brand without it is guessing by nose. There is no third possibility, which makes a reproduction offer straightforward to evaluate even without any technical knowledge.
What is SOSA's position?
SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel, hospitality, wellness or fashion group, and makes no claim to reproduce any brand's proprietary fragrance. We work in the family, name the family, and tell you where the translation to skin breaks down.

Formulation and use: SOSA attars are formulated with an oil carrier and no added ethanol, contain no intentionally added DEP, and are assessed as leave-on fine fragrance applied to skin at their actual selling concentration. Supplier IFRA conformity statements, declarable-allergen lists and the finished-product safety assessment are available per product on WhatsApp on +91 96192 18531; formula compositions and percentages are not disclosed. Reed diffuser oil and the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance are assessed for room use and are not assessed or sold for application to skin. SOSA does not describe its products as chemical-free, hypoallergenic or safe for everyone, publishes no longevity or hour figures, and makes no claim to reproduce any hotel, spa, resort or retail brand's proprietary fragrance. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel, hospitality or fashion group. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live collection pages.

General context: Fragrance safety standards set limits by product use category, so a composition assessed for diffusion in a room has not thereby been assessed for leave-on skin exposure. Nothing on this page is medical advice; if your skin reacts to a fragrance, stop using it and speak to a dermatologist.
