Founder Diaries · Expensive but still weak
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles5 min readUpdated August 2026
The short, honest answer is no — a dearer reed is not automatically louder in the room than a ₹300–₹500 one. What the extra money buys you is a finer reed: better oils, a richer character, a longer life, a nicer bottle. The reach across the room stays about the same, because both diffuse the same passive way. Price is a fragrance-quality dial, not a strength dial.
Quick answer
Is an expensive reed automatically stronger? No. Both cheap and premium reeds diffuse passively and project a similar short distance.
What does the price buy? Fragrance quality and longevity — better oils, more concentration, a truer scent, a bottle that lasts longer.
What if I want real room reach? Buy the method, not the oil. Small room → SOSA Safar ₹3,999 or Sukoon ₹1,899.
The short version
Short answer: No — expensive and cheap reeds both diffuse passively and reach a similar distance. The premium buys refinement and longevity, not projection.
The pick: Choose a finer reed for how it smells up close; for actual room reach choose the
SOSA Safar (₹3,999) or
Sukoon (₹1,899).
Why price and strength get tangled up
It's a fair assumption — in most things, more money buys more of what you want. So it feels natural that a ₹1,300 reed should be "stronger" than a ₹400 one. The trouble is that "stronger" hides two very different qualities. There's how rich a scent smells when you're close to it, and there's how far it travels across the room. Price moves the first one. It doesn't move the second, because the second isn't set by the fragrance at all — it's set by the method of diffusion.
Every reed diffuser, from the cheapest to the most refined, works the same way: the reeds draw the oil up and it evaporates slowly off the tips into the surrounding air. There's no fan, no heat, no mist — nothing to carry the fragrance any distance. So the scent gathers in a soft pool a foot or two around the bottle and settles there. A finer, costlier oil in that same passive method smells lovelier inside the pool, and it lasts more weeks before it turns flat, but the pool is roughly the same size. That's the whole reason an expensive reed is not automatically stronger in the room: you upgraded the fragrance, not the engine.
What more money genuinely buys
Real value — just not projection
A pricier reed usually gives you higher-grade oils, so the scent is truer and more layered rather than sharp or synthetic; a higher fragrance concentration, so it reads richer up close; better longevity, so it holds its character over weeks instead of fading to a whisper in days; often a larger bottle (a 130ml lasts noticeably longer than a 50ml); and a more considered bottle you're happy to have on show. Every bit of that is worth paying for — if what you want is a beautiful, lasting fragrance up close.
The honest tip: buy the dearer reed for the nightstand or dresser, where you're near it. Don't buy it hoping to be hit by scent from across the room.
The honest core
Price is a quality dial. Projection is a method dial. They are not the same knob.
A ₹1,300 reed and a ₹400 reed reach about the same distance because both are passive. Turn up the quality dial for a finer scent; turn up the method dial — to active diffusion — for genuine room-filling reach.
The honest caveat: there's one narrow case where a premium reed can seem a touch stronger — a higher concentration means a slightly denser scent right at the source. But that's richness at the bottle, not reach across the room. The moment you step a few feet away, both reeds behave like the passive products they are.
If it's reach you want, spend on the method
Here's where I'd rather be useful than sell you a bottle. If your real wish is to walk in and be met by fragrance, more money on a reed will keep disappointing you — you'll just own a lovelier scent you still can't smell from the door. Redirect that budget to an active diffuser instead. For a small room or bedroom, the waterless SOSA Safar atomises neat fragrance into a fine dry mist and projects with a strong, perfume-like throw you can trigger on demand. The Sukoon ultrasonic is the gentler, affordable everyday option that pushes scent out on a cool mist. Only for a genuinely large living room or villa would I point you at the SOSA Vaayu — it's oversized for a bedroom.
The affordable active step-up
Sukoon ₹1,899
A 500ml ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser that actively pushes scent out on a fine mist — a genuine "walk-in" bedroom or living-room scent no reed can match, at any reed price. Runs the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299). Adds a little humidity and needs power. The affordable way to buy projection instead of a costlier reed.

Frequently asked
Are expensive reed diffusers automatically stronger than ₹300–₹500 ones?
No. An expensive reed is not automatically stronger in the room than a ₹300–₹500 one. Both diffuse by the same passive evaporation, so both project roughly the same short distance. The extra money buys a more refined, longer-lasting fragrance in a nicer bottle — better oils, higher concentration, more staying power — not more reach. If the pricier reed seems stronger at first, it is usually smelling richer up close rather than travelling further across the room.
So what am I really paying for with a costlier reed diffuser?
You are paying for fragrance quality and longevity, not projection. A higher price typically means better-grade oils, a richer and more layered scent, a truer character that holds up over weeks rather than turning flat, a larger bottle, and more refined packaging. All of that is genuine and enjoyable at close range. It is worth choosing a finer reed if you value how it smells up close and how long it lasts — just not because you expect it to fill the room.
Can a more expensive reed diffuser ever fill a room?
Not through reach — reeds are close-range by design. A reed has no fan, heat or mist to push scent across a room, so it forms a gentle pool of fragrance around the bottle and no further, regardless of price. A costlier reed makes that pool smell finer; it does not make it bigger. Room-filling is a job for active diffusion, where a machine supplies the energy to carry the scent across the space.
If I want a stronger scent in the room, what should I buy instead?
An active diffuser sized to your space. For a small room or bedroom, the waterless SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 gives strong, dry, on-demand projection, and the Sukoon ultrasonic at ₹1,899 is the affordable everyday option. For a large living room or villa, the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 covers up to 1000 cubic metres. Put the money you were about to spend on a dearer reed toward the right active diffuser and you get the reach you actually wanted.
Buy the finer reed for love, the machine for reach
A dearer reed smells better — but if you want the room to smell it, buy the method.
For a small bedroom, the waterless SOSA Safar gives strong, dry, on-demand throw; the Sukoon is the affordable everyday option. Match the machine to the room — and keep the big Vaayu for big spaces.
