The structure of natural, porous materials makes them better at both holding fragrance and releasing it gently, and it is the reason reeds, wax and wood sit at the heart of good home fragrance.

Why do natural materials hold fragrance better? Because most natural materials, wood, paper reeds, natural wax, fabric, are porous, full of tiny spaces and surfaces. Fragrance soaks into that structure and is released slowly. Smooth, non-porous synthetics have little for scent to cling to, so it sits on the surface and disperses quickly.
Is that why reed diffusers use natural reeds? Yes. Porous reeds wick liquid fragrance up through their fibres and let it evaporate steadily. A smooth synthetic stick cannot draw fragrance up the same way, which is why the material of the reed really matters.

Why do natural materials hold fragrance better than synthetic ones?
It comes down to porosity, how much internal structure and surface a material has. Most natural materials, wood, paper-based reeds, natural waxes, cotton, wool, are porous: riddled with tiny spaces and fibres that fragrance can soak into and cling to. That huge internal surface area absorbs scent and then releases it slowly and evenly over time. Smooth, non-porous synthetics such as many plastics have little of this structure, so fragrance sits on the surface with nothing to hold it and disperses quickly. The same property that lets a wooden box smell of cedar for years is what makes natural carriers so good for home fragrance.

The reason some materials hold scent and others shrug it off is mostly about their structure at a small scale. A material that is full of tiny pores, channels and fibres has an enormous internal surface area, far more than its outside suggests, and fragrance molecules can settle all through it. A smooth, dense material has only its outer surface for scent to touch.
Porosity
How much of a material is made up of tiny open spaces. Porous materials like wood, paper, natural wax and fabric have vast internal surface area; fragrance soaks into this structure, is held there, and is released gradually. Non-porous materials have little internal space, so scent stays on the surface and leaves quickly.
This is why a natural material both absorbs more fragrance and gives it back more slowly. The scent is not just sitting on top; it has worked its way into the structure, and it takes time to evaporate back out. That slow, even release is exactly what you want in a home, a steady scent rather than a quick burst that vanishes.
Why reeds are made of what they are made of: the reeds in a diffuser are porous on purpose. Their fibres draw liquid fragrance up from the bottle by capillary action, the same wicking that pulls water up a paper towel, and then let it evaporate from the exposed length. A smooth synthetic stick has no such channels, so it cannot wick fragrance up the way a good natural or fibre reed can. The material is doing real work.
You can feel the same principle elsewhere in the home. Wooden furniture, books, wool and cotton all hold a scent and release it slowly, which is why a cedar cupboard keeps its smell for years and a linen drawer takes on the fragrance you store with it. Hard, glossy, non-porous surfaces do the opposite; a scent on glass or plastic disperses almost as fast as it lands.
