You cannot understand sandalwood's place in Indian perfume without understanding its place in Indian life first. The scent did not arrive through fashion - it arrived through faith and daily ritual, and that is why it feels so deeply familiar.
Chandan in Indian tradition
For centuries, sandalwood has been ground into a paste for worship, applied to the forehead, burned and offered in temples, and used as an aid to meditation. Its warm, soft-woody scent became associated with stillness, devotion and grounding. By the time it reaches a perfume bottle, chandan already carries all of that meaning - which is part of why an Indian sandalwood scent feels like home in a way few other notes do.
So when a perfumer in India uses sandalwood, they are not only choosing a smell - they are drawing on a shared memory. That cultural weight is the first reason it appears everywhere, from festive attars to everyday home scents. It is comfort in a note.
Why it suits the home too
The same grounding warmth that makes sandalwood meaningful in ritual makes it lovely in a room - quiet, settling, never sharp.

What a fixative does
In a perfume, different materials evaporate at different speeds. Bright top notes like citrus flash off in minutes; a heavy, slow material like sandalwood lingers for hours. A fixative is a slow material that does two jobs at once: it anchors the lighter notes so they do not vanish too fast, and it forms the warm base the whole scent rests on. Sandalwood is one of the great natural fixatives, which is why it sits at the foundation of so many compositions.
This is exactly how it works in our attars. In Ameeri, Indian sandalwood is the warm bed that holds the Taif rose and saffron in place long after a rose alone would have faded. In Nawaab, Mysore sandalwood gives white royal oud its creamy, lasting depth. Without the sandalwood base, both would be brighter and far shorter-lived.

"Real sandalwood perfume must use wild oil." No - wild sandalwood is over-harvested and protected; a naturally-derived accord is the responsible choice.
