Two or three retailers a month write to me convinced their machine is defective, and it almost never is. What they have noticed is real, it is physics rather than a fault, and once you see it properly it changes where you put the machine and what number you run it at.
Quick answers — read this first
Why does the fragrance vanish when the door opens? Because a door is an air exchange, not a wall. Every time it opens, a parcel of the store's air leaves and a parcel of street or corridor air comes in, and a shopfront that opens every minute or two is doing that continuously all day. The first metres of the store are therefore not a settled volume at all - they are being renewed faster than any source can fill them. Nothing is broken, nothing has run out, and the oil is not weak.
So do I need a stronger setting? No, and this is the expensive mistake. The level at the doorway is set by the rate of exchange, not by your dial, so turning up does almost nothing there. What it does do is raise the level in the settled part of the store, which is not being renewed at the same rate - so you buy an interior that is too much for the advisor breathing it nine hours a day, while the threshold carries on smelling of the street. You have paid to make the one place that was right, wrong.
What should I do instead, and what does it cost? Move the source inward and judge the room from the right place. Put the machine well inside, away from the door and out of the direct path of a return grille, and assess the store standing three metres in rather than on the mat. If the fit-out ever allows it, a vestibule or an air curtain does more than any dial - a designer and building question, not mine. For most readers this page costs ₹0 because the machine is already bought; if it is not, a Vaayu is ₹11,999.
The short answer
Short answer: because a door is an air exchange rather than a wall. Every opening swaps a parcel of the store's air for street or corridor air, so the first metres are continuously renewed and cannot hold a level no matter what the dial says. Nothing is faulty. Place the source inward on the settled air, judge the room three metres in, and do not compensate by turning up.
The pick: for most readers, no purchase at all - move the machine you already own inward and drop the setting, at a cost of ₹0. If you have not bought yet, one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), wall or HVAC mounted well inside the store, or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) in a single room.
Next step: tell us roughly how often the door opens in a trading hour, where the machine sits now and where your seating is, and we will tell you where to move it and what to drop the setting to - Ask for a retail scenting plan.
The single most useful physical fact in retail scenting, and the one that decides placement. Most readers of this page fix it by moving something they already own.
The machine, mounted inward on the settled air - tap for the specification
Why does my store fragrance disappear every time the main door opens?
Because that is precisely what a door does. A door is an air exchange, not a wall. Every time it opens, a parcel of your store's air goes out and a parcel of street or corridor air comes in, and the exchange is more vigorous the greater the difference in temperature between the two sides - which in an air-conditioned store in an Indian summer is considerable. A shopfront that opens every minute or two through a trading day is therefore renewing the air near it continuously. The first metre or two of your store is not a settled volume at all. It is a moving one, and no source of any kind can fill a volume that is being replaced faster than it is being filled. So the first thing to say is the reassuring thing: nothing is faulty, nothing has run out, and the composition is not weak. If the machine is running, if the room three metres in reads the way you set it, and only the doorway goes, then the equipment is behaving exactly as it should. The second thing is the expensive thing. Do not answer this at the dial. The level at the threshold is governed by the rate at which that air is exchanged, not by how much you put into the room, so turning up moves the doorway barely at all. What it does move is the settled part of the store - the middle of the showroom, the seating, the lounge - which is not being renewed at anything like the same rate and which therefore climbs steadily. The outcome is the worst available: a doorway that still smells of the street and an interior that is too much for the advisor who breathes it nine hours a day and for the customer sitting at the case for an hour. You will have paid money to make the part that was right, wrong. What works instead is placement and judgement. Put the source well inside the store, away from the doorway and out of the direct path of a return grille, so it is filling the volume that actually holds air rather than the one that keeps being emptied; a wall or HVAC mount is what makes this practical, because a free-standing unit tends to end up wherever there is a socket, and the socket is usually near the front. Then judge the store from three metres in, walking from the street after ten minutes outside, rather than standing on the mat. If your fit-out ever allows it, a vestibule, an inner door or an air curtain does more for the threshold than every dial in the industry put together, and that is a conversation for your designer, your landlord or mall management rather than for me. And then accept the rest. The threshold is not where a store's scent lives, and a store that accepts that reads better than one that has been pushed upward in an argument it cannot win. Fragrance here is a presentation decision and it is never used to deal with another smell. For most people reading this the honest total is ₹0, because the machine is already on the wall and needs moving rather than replacing. If you have not bought yet, that is one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, or one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 in a single room. Ask for a retail scenting plan and tell us where the machine sits now.
A door is an air exchange, not a wall, so the first metres cannot hold a level. Nothing is faulty. Move the source inward, judge the store three metres in, and never answer a doorway with a dial.
If you are buying rather than repositioning, the machine is one SOSA Vaayu - wall or HVAC mountable, which is the feature that matters here because it frees placement from wherever the socket happens to be, rated to 1000m³, under 38dB, with a key-lock. ₹11,999. Under 750 sq ft, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead.
If you already own a machine, this section is about where it sits rather than what to replace it with. The images link to the product pages so you can check the mounting options.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, auto-stop and key-lock. Wall and HVAC mountable, which is the relevant feature on this page: it lets the source sit on the settled air rather than beside the door where the socket is.
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. In one room the placement question is simpler but the principle is identical - as far from the doorway as the room allows, and never on the counter nearest the entrance.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.
Three corrections, in order, and the first two are free for anybody who already owns a machine.
1
Move the source off the threshold
A free-standing unit ends up where the socket is, and the socket is near the door
Walk your store and ask honestly why the machine is where it is. In most boutiques the answer is a power point rather than a decision. Move it well inside - onto the settled volume where the showroom actually holds its air - and keep it out of the direct path of a return grille, where output is drawn away before anyone experiences it, and out of the direct blast of a supply that will throw it straight at the doorway. A wall or HVAC mount is what makes this a design decision rather than a cable-length decision. For a store that already owns its machine this correction costs an afternoon and a bracket, and it is usually the whole answer.
Tip: Mark where it is now on your floor plan before you move it. If the new position is worse, you want to be able to go back.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
The mat is the one place in the store you cannot take a reading from
Owners assess their own stores from the doorway because that is where they arrive, and the doorway is the one location whose air is being replaced continuously. Go outside for ten minutes, walk in, keep walking, and form your judgement standing where a customer stands when they stop at a case. That is the volume you are actually setting. If the store reads right at three metres and wrong on the mat, your store is correct and your measuring point is not. Ask your floor team to judge it from the same place, because they are the people breathing it all day and they hold the only real measurement in the building.
Tip: Do it twice, morning and late afternoon. The exchange rate changes with the temperature outside.
Take the threshold question to the fit-out, not the dial
A vestibule or an air curtain does more than every setting ever offered
The only interventions that genuinely change the exchange rate are structural: a second inner door, a small vestibule, an air curtain, or simply a door policy that keeps it shut between customers rather than propped open because it is easier on a hot afternoon. Those belong to your designer, your landlord or mall management, and I hand them over rather than pretend a machine substitutes for them. Meanwhile the key-lock on a Vaayu at ₹11,999 exists for exactly this situation, because the request to turn it up always comes from someone standing near the door.
Tip: A propped-open door on a hot day undoes more than any adjustment you can make indoors.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
A door is an air exchange rather than a wall, so the threshold of a store is not a room you can hold - and it was never where your fragrance lived.
Everything about placement follows from that one sentence, including why the machine should not be anywhere near the entrance.
Mounted where you decide, not where the socket is: SOSA Vaayu is wall and HVAC mountable, so the source can sit on the settled air deep in the store. ₹11,999.
Waterless by design: SOSA Vaayu adds no moisture to the room and leaves no residue on surfaces - a fact about the machine, not a claim about your stock. ₹11,999.
The doorway is the one part of your store that belongs to the street, and every rupee spent trying to buy it back gets spent making the middle of the shop too loud.

Why mounting is the feature that matters here
The source belongs on the settled air, not beside the entrance
Two machines cover almost every watch store in the country, and which one you need is decided by floor size and air path rather than by how often the door opens. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA before a rollout. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA watch-boutique specification
Placement first, and a machine only if you do not already own one
Move what you own before you buy anything else, and expect that to be the end of it. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or case layout; it is never used to deal with another smell, and it is never a substitute for door management or building air handling. Air curtains, vestibules, pressure and fresh-air intake belong to your designer, your landlord, mall management or your HVAC contractor, and I hand them over rather than guess. No one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, dwell or spend. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
The message usually opens with an apology and a suspicion that the machine is defective. It almost never is. What has been noticed is entirely real - the fragrance is present, someone opens the door, and it goes - and the explanation is so simple that it is easy to miss: a door is not a wall. It is an exchange. Air leaves, street air arrives, and on a hot day the exchange is brisker still because the temperature difference is doing work. A shopfront opening every couple of minutes is doing that all day long.
Which means the first metres of your store are not a room in the sense you need them to be. They are a moving volume, and nothing can fill a volume that is being replaced faster than it is filled. The correct response is to stop trying. Move the source inward, onto the air that actually settles, out of a return grille's pull and out of a supply grille's throw. Judge the store standing three metres in, after ten minutes outside, and get your floor team to judge it from the same place. If your fit-out can ever accommodate a vestibule or an air curtain, that will do more than every dial I could offer you - and it is a conversation with your designer or the centre, not with me.
What I would ask you not to do is turn it up. The doorway will not change, because it is governed by the rate of exchange rather than by how much you put in, and the middle of the store will climb until the advisor standing in it nine hours a day starts avoiding that corner. For most people reading this, the fix is a bracket and a lower number, and it costs nothing. If you have not bought yet, under 750 sq ft it is a Sukoon at ₹1,899 and past about 1,500 sq ft a Vaayu at ₹11,999, mounted well inside the store. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my store fragrance disappear every time the main door opens?
Because a door is an air exchange rather than a wall. Each opening swaps a parcel of the store's air for street or corridor air, and the exchange is brisker the greater the temperature difference between inside and out. A shopfront opening every minute or two renews the air near it continuously, so the first metres are never a settled volume. Nothing is faulty, nothing has run out, and the composition is not weak.
Should I increase the setting to compensate for door traffic?
No. The level at the threshold is governed by how fast that air is exchanged, not by how much you put into the room, so turning up moves the doorway barely at all. What it does move is the settled part of the store, which climbs until it is too much for the advisor breathing it all day and for a customer seated at a case for an hour. You would be paying to make the part that was right, wrong.
Where should a scent machine go in a store with a busy door?
Well inside the store on the volume that actually holds its air, out of the direct pull of a return grille and out of the throw of a supply grille that points at the entrance. In most boutiques the machine sits near the door only because that is where the socket is. The SOSA Vaayu is wall and HVAC mountable, which turns placement into a design decision rather than a cable-length decision.
What does it cost to fix this?
For most readers, nothing. The machine is already bought and the correction is a bracket, a new position and a lower number, none of which is a purchase. If you have not bought yet, it is Rs 1,899 for a single room or Rs 11,999 for a larger trading floor. The genuinely effective threshold interventions - a vestibule, an inner door, an air curtain, or simply keeping the door shut between customers - sit with your designer or the building rather than with a fragrance supplier.
Will an air curtain help my store hold its fragrance?
It is the kind of intervention that changes the exchange itself rather than working around it, which is why it does more than any setting. Whether one is appropriate, permitted and practical for your shopfront is a question for your designer, your landlord and, in a mall, centre management - it is a building decision and not one a fragrance supplier should specify. What I can say plainly is that no machine setting substitutes for it, and I would rather tell you that than sell around it.
The cheaper honest answer: A single-room shop under about 750 sq ft is a SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, placed as far from the doorway as the room allows.

If you are buying, the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers up to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, and mounts on a wall or into the HVAC so it never has to live beside the entrance; under about 750 sq ft it is a Sukoon at ₹1,899. Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room.
