Why Does My Air-Conditioned House Smell Stale?

Start with what a room air conditioner actually does, because most people have it slightly wrong. A split AC is not a ventilator. It does not bring outdoor air into your home. It draws in the air that is already in the room, pulls it across a cold coil, drops its temperature, wrings some moisture out of it and blows the same air back at you. Nothing comes in and nothing goes out. So on a day when the windows have been shut since morning and the units have run for ten hours, your house has had almost no air exchange at all, and everything the house emits has simply been accumulating inside it - the moisture and carbon dioxide off the people in it, yesterday's cooking, whatever carpets, upholstery, books and cupboards release slowly all day, cleaning products, the bin, the pet. Then there is the second source, and very often it is the actual answer: the air conditioner itself.
