This is the fragrance question rather than the machine question, and it has two halves that people usually answer separately and then regret. Half one is the character you want. Half two is which of our two fragrance systems that character has to arrive in. Get both right in one sitting and you will not waste a bottle.
Quick answers — read this first
Which SOSA fragrance should I choose for my bedroom? Choose the character first, then buy it in the system your diffuser takes. For a reed diffuser, Evening Calm (Himalayan lavender and chamomile, ₹799 for 50ml) is the default for a bedroom, with Garden Bloom (British rose and night-blooming jasmine, ₹799) for florals, Morning Freshness (₹749) for fresh, Mountain Breeze (₹849) for woody and Fresh Brew (₹849) for gourmand. For an ultrasonic diffuser such as the Sukoon or Boond, you need water-based Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299 for 15ml, which is a different system and not interchangeable with reed oil.
Can I use the same SOSA fragrance in a reed diffuser and an ultrasonic diffuser? No. They are two separate systems. Reed oil is formulated to be drawn up rattan reeds and to evaporate slowly from them, and it belongs only in a reed diffuser. The water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, from ₹299 for 15ml and also sold in 100ml and 300ml, is made to be added to the water in an ultrasonic diffuser such as the SOSA Sukoon or Boond. Neither works properly in the other device, so check what you own before you buy the fragrance.
Which fragrance family suits a bedroom best? The one that suits the hours you are in the room. Soft florals, herbs and dry woods read as calm and suit an evening bedroom: Evening Calm (₹799) or Mountain Breeze (₹849). Bright citrus and mint read as awake and suit a bedroom you get ready in, which is Morning Freshness (₹749). Gourmand sweetness like Fresh Brew (₹849) is lovely in a winter room but concentrates in a small closed one. There is no wrong family, only a wrong strength for the room.
The short answer
Short answer: choose the character you want, then buy it in the system your diffuser takes. For a reed, the bedroom default is Evening Calm at ₹799 for 50ml, with Garden Bloom ₹799 for floral, Morning Freshness ₹749 for fresh, Mountain Breeze ₹849 for woody and Fresh Brew ₹849 for gourmand. For an ultrasonic diffuser you need water-based Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299, which is a separate system from reed oil and not interchangeable with it.
Next step: tell us which diffuser you own or intend to buy, and what you want the room to feel like, and we will name one bottle - ask us what suits your bedroom.
Most people choose the fragrance and then discover it does not fit the device they own. Deciding the character and the system in the same sitting saves a wasted bottle.
Which SOSA fragrance should I choose for my bedroom?
Decide the character first, then check the system, and never assume a fragrance you like is available in the format you own. Start with character, because that is the part you actually care about. Five characters cover the reed range. Calm is Evening Calm at ₹799 for 50ml, Himalayan lavender with chamomile - soft, powdery, and the single best default for a bedroom. Floral is Garden Bloom at ₹799, British rose with night-blooming jasmine. Fresh is Morning Freshness at ₹749, Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus. Woody is Mountain Breeze at ₹849, Himalayan pine with sage and cedar. Gourmand is Fresh Brew at ₹849, Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla. Every one comes in 50ml and 130ml, and a 50ml lasts 6 to 8 weeks against the 130ml's 14 to 18, depending on room size, airflow and how often you flip the reeds. Now narrow it with two questions about your actual room. When are you in it? A bedroom you get ready in at eight in the morning suits a bright fragrance; a bedroom you read in every evening suits a soft or dry one. How big is it? Size does not change the character you should buy, it changes the strength: three reeds in a small closed room, four or five in a larger or airier one. Then the half people miss. SOSA fragrance comes in two systems and they are not interchangeable. Reed oil goes in reed diffusers only. If you own or intend to buy an ultrasonic diffuser - the SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 or the smaller Boond at ₹899 - you need water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, from ₹299 for 15ml and also sold in 100ml and 300ml, which is added to the water in the tank. Putting reed oil into an ultrasonic does not work, and water-based fragrance will not travel up a rattan reed. Buy the fragrance for the machine you own, not the machine you read about. And the honest do-not-buy notes: do not buy a gourmand for a small closed bedroom unless you love sweetness, because it concentrates; do not buy a bright citrus for a room you only wind down in; do not buy a 130ml first; and do not buy any fragrance while the room's real smell is damp, an old mattress or a shoe pile. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Character first: calm is Evening Calm ₹799, floral is Garden Bloom ₹799, fresh is Morning Freshness ₹749, woody is Mountain Breeze ₹849, gourmand is Fresh Brew ₹849. Then the system: reed oil for reeds, water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 for ultrasonics. Never mix them.
If you want one fragrance named for a bedroom, it is SOSA Evening Calm - Himalayan lavender and chamomile, soft and low. ₹799 for 50ml lasting 6 to 8 weeks, depending on room size, airflow and how often you flip the reeds. If you own an ultrasonic diffuser instead, you need water-based Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299.
Two reed characters and the water-based fragrance for ultrasonic diffusers. The other three reeds, Morning Freshness at ₹749, Mountain Breeze at ₹849 and Fresh Brew at ₹849, are covered in the table below so the whole range is in the decision.
Himalayan lavender with chamomile in alcohol-free reed oil. Soft, powdery and low-contrast, which is the shape that suits a room you sleep in. 50ml ₹799 lasting 6 to 8 weeks, 130ml ₹1,299 lasting 14 to 18 weeks, depending on room size, airflow and reed flips.
British rose with night-blooming jasmine. A genuine floral with real presence, and the one to choose if lavender reads too herbal for you. Keep it to three reeds in a small closed bedroom so it stays a room rather than a bouquet. 50ml ₹799, 130ml ₹1,299.
Water-based fragrance for ultrasonic diffusers such as the SOSA Sukoon and Boond, from ₹299 for 15ml and also available in 100ml and 300ml. Added to the water in the tank. It is not reed oil and cannot be used in a reed diffuser, and reed oil cannot be used in its place.
Himalayan lavender and chamomile in alcohol-free reed oil. The softest character in the range and the safest default for a room you sleep in, with no flame, no power and no water. 50ml from ₹799 lasting 6 to 8 weeks, 130ml lasting 14 to 18 weeks, depending on room size, airflow and reed-flip frequency. Made in India.
Two systems, five characters, and the mistake that wastes a bottle
Three things settle the fragrance question, and the third one is where money actually gets wasted.
1
Character
Five families, and none of them is wrong for a bedroom
Fresh, floral, calm, woody, gourmand. In the SOSA reed range that is Morning Freshness at ₹749 (Malabar lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus), Garden Bloom at ₹799 (British rose, night-blooming jasmine), Evening Calm at ₹799 (Himalayan lavender, chamomile), Mountain Breeze at ₹849 (Himalayan pine, sage, cedar) and Fresh Brew at ₹849 (Coorg coffee, Kerala vanilla). The internet will tell you citrus does not belong in a bedroom and sweetness is cosy, and both of those are half-truths. What is actually true is that a bedroom rewards a fragrance with a soft opening and not much distance between its loudest and quietest moment, and every family can be worn that way at the right strength. So buy the character you genuinely like. If you cannot decide, Evening Calm is the one people regret least, and that is not a small thing when you are committing six to eight weeks.
Tip: there is no wrong family for a bedroom, only a wrong strength for the room.
Evening Calm is the softest character we make and the safest default, ₹799 for 50ml.
When you are in the room, and how much air is in it
Two adjustments to the character you picked. First, hours. If your bedroom is really a morning room - you get ready there and barely see it again until midnight - a bright fragrance earns its place and Morning Freshness at ₹749 is a genuinely good bedroom buy. If it is where you read, work or wind down every evening, go soft, floral or dry: Evening Calm, Garden Bloom or Mountain Breeze. Second, size. This does not change which fragrance to buy, it changes how much of it you let out. Three reeds in a 100 to 150 sq ft bedroom, four or five in a larger or airier room, and always start below what you think you need. If you own an ultrasonic instead, the equivalent adjustment is the output setting and the run time rather than reed count. A shared bedroom deserves one more rule: choose the quieter of the two scents you are debating, because dislike registers more strongly than delight.
Garden Bloom suits an evening bedroom, at three reeds rather than six, ₹799.
Reed oil and water-based fragrance are not interchangeable
This is where a bottle gets wasted, and it happens often enough that it goes in every guide we write. SOSA fragrance exists in two systems. Reed oil is formulated to be drawn up rattan by capillary action and evaporate slowly from the exposed length; it goes in reed diffusers and nowhere else. Water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, from ₹299 for 15ml and also sold in 100ml and 300ml, is made to be added to the water in an ultrasonic diffuser such as the Sukoon at ₹1,899 or the Boond at ₹899, where a vibrating plate mists it into the room. Reed oil in an ultrasonic does not work. Water-based fragrance will not climb a reed. So before you buy any fragrance, answer the boring question: what device is this actually going into? If the answer is nothing yet, decide the device first, because that decision constrains the fragrance and not the other way round.
Tip: buy fragrance for the device you own, not the one you read about.
Hotel Collection is the water-based fragrance for ultrasonic diffusers, from ₹299.
Choosing a fragrance is two decisions wearing one coat: which character you want in the room, and which system it has to arrive in. People make the first one carefully and the second one by accident.
Answer the boring question before the interesting one. What device is this going into?
The floral character: Garden Bloom reed - British rose with night-blooming jasmine, ₹799 for 50ml and ₹1,299 for 130ml. Three reeds in a small closed room.
The whole range, matched to what you want and to the machine you own. The fourth row is the one that saves people money.
The SOSA plan
Bedroom fragrance - character, then system
What you want
What to buy
Calm and soft, for a room you wind down in
Evening Calm reed oil. Himalayan lavender with chamomile. 50ml ₹799, 130ml ₹1,299. The default for a bedroom. View →
Flowers - rose and jasmine, a little romantic
Garden Bloom reed oil. 50ml ₹799, 130ml ₹1,299. Keep it to three reeds in a small closed room. View →
Fresh and awake, dry woods, or coffee and vanilla
Morning Freshness ₹749 for lemon, mint and eucalyptus; Mountain Breeze ₹849 for pine, sage and cedar; Fresh Brew ₹849 for Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla. All in 50ml and 130ml.
You already own a Sukoon or Boond ultrasonic diffuser
Water-based Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299 for 15ml, also 100ml and 300ml. Reed oil will not work in an ultrasonic diffuser. View →
One thing worth saying about the Hotel Collection, because the name invites a question. These are SOSA's own interpretations of the kind of clean, composed fragrance you meet in a good hotel lobby, made water-based for ultrasonic diffusers, and they start at ₹299 for 15ml with 100ml and 300ml sizes above that. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel, and we would rather say that plainly than let the category name imply otherwise. The 15ml is also the sensible way to try a character before committing to a larger bottle. If you want the reed range compared on its own terms, which SOSA reed diffuser should I buy for my bedroom is the decision tree for the five reeds, and if you have not yet chosen the machine, the SOSA bedroom fragrance buying guide takes the whole decision from format to bottle. The pillar is best home fragrance for a bedroom in India.
The default character: Evening Calm reed - Himalayan lavender and chamomile, ₹799 for 50ml lasting 6 to 8 weeks depending on room size, airflow and reed flips.
SOSA Evening Calm is ₹799 for 50ml, lasting 6 to 8 weeks depending on room size, airflow and how often you flip the reeds. Soft, powdery, and the character people regret least.
Pick the fragrance for the room you actually live in, at the hours you are actually in it, in the system your machine actually takes. Three checks, and almost nobody does the third.

By system
Reed oil for reeds. Water-based Hotel Collection for ultrasonics
Five reed characters and one water-based fragrance range, which between them cover every bedroom we are asked about. Reed oil goes in reeds; Hotel Collection goes in ultrasonics; the two never swap. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA bedroom fragrance shortlist
The default character, and the one for an ultrasonic
Anyone who owns or is buying an ultrasonic diffuser
Water-based fragrance for ultrasonic diffusers only, 15ml from ₹299 and also 100ml and 300ml. Added to the water in the tank. Not reed oil and not a substitute for it
The honest notes before you buy fragrance. Do not buy reed oil for an ultrasonic diffuser, or water-based fragrance for a reed - they are separate systems and neither works in the other, which is the single most expensive mistake in this category. Do not buy a gourmand character for a very small closed bedroom unless you love sweetness, because it concentrates in a small volume of air. Do not buy a bright citrus for a room you only use to wind down in, and do not buy a 130ml before you know a scent suits you. Do not buy any fragrance while the room still smells of damp, a mattress, laundry or shoes - that is a cleaning job. And the Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations; we are independent and not affiliated with any hotel. Reed care: coaster, out of reach of children and pets, not for skin or ingestion. Tell us what you own and what you like and we will name one bottle.

A note from Sonal
When someone asks me which fragrance to choose, I ask two questions back. What do you want the room to feel like, and what are you going to put it in? The first is the interesting question and the second is the one that saves money, because we make fragrance in two systems that cannot be swapped. Reed oil climbs rattan and evaporates. The water-based Hotel Collection goes into the tank of an ultrasonic. Neither works in the other, and a bottle bought for the wrong device is simply a wasted bottle.
On character, my shortest advice: Evening Calm at ₹799 is the one I name most often for a bedroom, because lavender and chamomile is soft and there is nothing sharp at the top of it. Garden Bloom at ₹799 if you would rather have flowers. Morning Freshness at ₹749 if your bedroom is really a morning room. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 for dry woods, Fresh Brew at ₹849 for coffee and vanilla in a winter room. And if you own an ultrasonic, the water-based Hotel Collection starts at ₹299 for 15ml, which is a cheap way to try a character.
Two straight lines to finish. The Hotel Collection scents are my own interpretations of the kind of clean, composed fragrance you meet in a good hotel; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel, and I would rather say so than let a category name do the implying. And no fragrance from either system will fix a room that smells of damp or an old mattress. Air it, clean it, then choose. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Which SOSA fragrance is best for a bedroom?
Evening Calm, if you want one named. It is Himalayan lavender with chamomile in reed oil, Rs 799 for 50ml and Rs 1,299 for 130ml, and soft and low suits a room you sleep in. The rest of the reed range is Morning Freshness Rs 749 for fresh, Garden Bloom Rs 799 for floral, Mountain Breeze Rs 849 for woody and Fresh Brew Rs 849 for gourmand. If you own an ultrasonic diffuser, you need water-based Hotel Collection fragrance from Rs 299 instead.
Can I use reed diffuser oil in an ultrasonic diffuser?
No. Reed oil and water-based fragrance are two separate systems and are not interchangeable. Reed oil is made to travel up rattan reeds and evaporate slowly. Water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, from Rs 299 for 15ml and also sold in 100ml and 300ml, is made to be added to the water in an ultrasonic diffuser such as the SOSA Sukoon or Boond. Buying the wrong one for your device wastes the bottle.
Is the SOSA Hotel Collection connected to a particular hotel?
No. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations of the kind of clean, composed fragrance people associate with good hotels. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel, and we say so wherever the category name might imply otherwise. They are water-based fragrances for ultrasonic diffusers, from Rs 299 for 15ml, and are not reed oil.
What fragrance suits a small bedroom?
Any character, at a lower strength. Size changes how much fragrance you let out rather than which one you buy: three reeds rather than the whole pack in a 100 to 150 sq ft room, or a lower output setting and shorter run time on an ultrasonic. The one to be careful with is a gourmand like Fresh Brew at Rs 849, because sweetness concentrates in a small closed room and can feel heavy by the third evening.
Should I choose a different fragrance for a morning bedroom?
Yes, and it is the question people forget to ask. If your bedroom is somewhere you get ready in the morning and barely see until midnight, a bright fragrance like Morning Freshness at Rs 749 genuinely suits it. If it is where you read and wind down every evening, choose something soft or dry such as Evening Calm at Rs 799 or Mountain Breeze at Rs 849. The hours you are in the room matter more than any general rule about what belongs in a bedroom.
If you own an ultrasonic: Hotel Collection water-based fragrance from ₹299 for 15ml, also in 100ml and 300ml. For ultrasonic diffusers only - never for reeds.

Water-based Hotel Collection fragrance for ultrasonic diffusers starts at ₹299 for 15ml. The two systems are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent, not affiliated with any hotel.
