How is this different from the "scent collapse" story you wrote about elsewhere?
Excellent question — they're complementary but distinct mechanisms. Scent collapse (covered in our long-lasting lavender piece) is chemical — the freshener's carrier evaporates, base notes go stale, and the formulation actively decomposes. Even if your brain were perfectly attentive, the cabin air would smell wrong. Olfactory fatigue (this piece) is perceptual — the formulation might be chemically perfect, but your brain has filtered it out. Both can ruin a car-fragrance experience; the right product solves for both. SOSA Lavender is built to fight both.
How can I check if my current freshener is still working or if my brain has just adapted?
Use the fresh-nose return test. Park your car for 4-6 hours, walk away, come back, open the door and take a single deliberate breath. If the cabin smells pleasant and recognisable on that first breath — your freshener is working and your brain has just adapted (which is normal). If the cabin smells empty or stale — the formulation has actually decomposed. The first situation is olfactory fatigue and is fixed by molecular complexity. The second is scent collapse and is fixed by formulation chemistry.
Why do "long-lasting" lavender fresheners still feel like they stop working in a week?
Because "long-lasting" usually refers to chemical longevity in the bottle, not perceptual longevity in your brain. A synthetic Linalool freshener can release molecules for 60 days while becoming neurologically invisible by Day 4. The 60-day claim is technically true and perceptually meaningless. Real Lavandula angustifolia oil's 30+ molecule complex is the rare formulation type that delivers both chemical longevity AND perceptual longevity, because the cabin smell ratio shifts across days as different volatility tiers evaporate. Real lavender doesn't last longer — it stays noticeable longer.
Will the rotation trick really reset my nose?
Yes — and it works better than most drivers expect. Switching cabin scents for 3-5 days resets the receptor adaptation that built up around the original scent. When you switch back, the original registers as "new input" again because your baseline has moved. Is olfactory fatigue worse with strong fragrances or with subtle ones?

When I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, the framing taught was that fragrance is a relationship between molecule and perception over time. Most car perfumes solve for the molecule and ignore the perception.
