Most questions in this series need a bridge between what you love and what the range has. This one does not. Oud with saffron and amber has a literal answer in the range, and the only real question is which of two bottles you want it in.
Quick answers — read this first
Which attar has oud, saffron and amber? Two do. SOSA Nawaab at ₹399 has Kashmir saffron in its top and amber in its base, with white royal oud. SOSA Ameeri at ₹385 has Persian saffron in its top and amber in its base, with soft oudh.
How do Nawaab and Ameeri differ? Nawaab is dry and dark: oud-led, with aged tobacco leaf, leather and white musk. Ameeri is softer: saffron and pink pepper over Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, with soft oudh. Same saffron and amber, different company.
What if I want saffron and amber without oud?SOSA Zaffran at ₹599 is SOSA's saffron sweet-amber perfume oil, radiant and with no oud. It comes in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml. It is a perfume oil rather than an attar.
The short answer
Short answer: Both SOSA Nawaab and SOSA Ameeri carry saffron and amber together with oud. Nawaab is dry and dark, with tobacco leaf and leather. Ameeri is softer, with Taif rose and soft oudh.
The pick: One 3ml of SOSA Ameeri at ₹385 for saffron out front with rose, or one 3ml of SOSA Nawaab at ₹399 for saffron in a dark, dry company. Both carry the amber.
Next step: Tell us whether you want it dry and dark or rosy and soft, and we will name one of the two and one size. Ask for an attar recommendation.
Where saffron and amber sit across the range, with the 3ml price under each attar. Two bottles carry both with oud, one carries oud without either, and the perfume oil at the end carries both without oud.
The two saffron-and-amber ouds, and the Trio that holds both
Which Attar Should I Buy If I Like Oud With Saffron and Amber?
The answer is literal and it is two bottles. Both Nawaab and Ameeri carry saffron and amber together with oud, and the choice between them is the company they keep. Five steps.
1. Both Nawaab and Ameeri carry saffron and amber.SOSA Nawaab has Kashmir saffron in its top and amber in its base; SOSA Ameeri has Persian saffron in its top and amber in its base. The range has oud with saffron and amber in two bottles, so there is no gap to bridge.
2. Choose Nawaab if you want them in a dark, dry company.SOSA Nawaab at ₹399 is white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron and aged tobacco leaf, over amber, leather and white musk. The deepest of the four.
3. Choose Ameeri if you want saffron out front, with rose.SOSA Ameeri at ₹385 is Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot over Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, on soft oudh, amber and white musk. Oud softened.
4. Skip Mastani for this taste.SOSA Mastani carries oudh, but neither saffron nor amber; its warmth is vanilla and tonka. If saffron and amber matter more than oud, SOSA Zaffran at ₹599 is a saffron sweet-amber perfume oil with no oud.
5. Buy the 3ml and judge it at hour three. One dab, an ordinary day. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin and nothing beyond that; how far it carries depends on your skin, your dose and the weather.
Nobody can promise you what anyone else will think of it, and I am not going to. What a fragrance can be is consistent, close and distinctive. What it does in someone else's head is theirs.
Saffron, amber and oud: SOSA Ameeri at ₹385 for rosy and soft, SOSA Nawaab at ₹399 for dry and dark. Both carry both notes. One 3ml, judged at hour three.
If saffron out front, with rose, is the taste, buy one 3ml of SOSA Ameeri at ₹385. If saffron in a dark, dry company is the taste, buy one 3ml of SOSA Nawaab at ₹399. Both carry amber in the base. Both are alcohol-free roll-on oils on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, with a dab applicator.
SOSA makes four attars and two of them carry saffron and amber together with oud. All are alcohol-free oils on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, hand-blended in Pune, with a dab applicator, in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The two below are those two; the third bottle in the feature card carries oud without either.
₹399 for 3ml, ₹699 for 6ml, ₹1,199 for 12ml. White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron and aged tobacco leaf over amber, leather and white musk. The saffron sits in the top with the oud, the amber in the base with leather. Oud-led, the deepest of the four, and the drier answer to this taste.
₹385 for 3ml, ₹679 for 6ml, ₹1,165 for 12ml. Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot over Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, on soft oudh, amber and white musk. The saffron opens the composition, the amber closes it, and the oud sits softly between. SOSA calls it “the scent of old money”.
₹389 for 3ml, ₹685 for 6ml, ₹1,179 for 12ml. Litchi, bergamot and pink pepper over night-blooming jasmine and Damask rose, on Mysore sandalwood, oudh, Madagascar vanilla and tonka. A lovely oud, but the warmth is vanilla and tonka, not saffron and amber, so it is the wrong answer to this question.
Why this pairing with oud is so natural, what each note contributes, and why the same two notes in two bottles are two very different perfumes. The company they keep is the whole difference.
1
One
Saffron opens warm, and amber keeps the warmth at the base
Saffron is a spice with a slightly leathery, golden warmth, and it tends to sit at the front of a composition. Amber is a resinous glow and sits at the back. Between them they make a frame, warm at the start and warm at the finish, and oud is the dark material that the frame holds. That is why people who love oud so often say they love it with saffron and amber: the three do different jobs in the same perfume. Both Nawaab and Ameeri are built on that frame, with different things around it.
Tip: Wear it once on a pulse point and check the top at ten minutes and the base at hour three. The frame is easiest to hear in those two places.
Nawaab at ₹399 puts Kashmir saffron in the top with white royal oud and amber in the base with leather. The frame, in a dark and dry version.
The same two notes, two companies: dry and dark, or rosy and soft
In Nawaab the saffron meets Mysore sandalwood and aged tobacco leaf, and the amber sits beside leather and white musk. The result is dry and dark, and oud is the subject of the sentence. In Ameeri the saffron meets pink pepper and bergamot, then Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, and the amber sits beside soft oudh and white musk. The result is rosier and softer, with oud as depth rather than statement. If you have found saffron and amber too sweet before, Nawaab is the likelier of the two; if you have found oud too severe, Ameeri is.
Tip: Decide whether you want oud to lead or to support, and the choice between the two makes itself.
Ameeri at ₹385 puts Persian saffron in the top with pink pepper and bergamot, then Taif rose, and amber in the base with soft oudh. The same frame, rosier and softer.
If saffron and amber matter more than oud, there is a third bottle
Some readers who say oud with saffron and amber turn out to want the saffron and the amber and not the oud. For them SOSA has Zaffran, a saffron sweet-amber perfume oil with no oud, in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml. It is radiant rather than dark, and it is a perfume oil rather than an attar, so it sits in a different part of the range. It is worth naming because pretending that every saffron-and-amber lover wants oud would send some of you home with the wrong bottle.
Tip: If you would happily wear the saffron and amber without any oud, the 10ml of Zaffran is the cheaper test. If oud is the point, stay with the attars.
The Attar Trio from ₹1,055 holds Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, so both saffron-and-amber ouds and the sweet one that lacks both, in a single box.
Saffron and amber are a frame, and oud is what the frame holds. Two bottles in the range build that frame, one dry and dark and one rosy and soft, so the question was never whether the range has it.
It was always which company you want the frame to keep: tobacco leaf and leather, or rose and sandalwood. That is a question your own nose answers in three ordinary days, one dab at a time.
For saffron and amber with oud in a dark, dry company: Nawaab at ₹399 is white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron and aged tobacco leaf, over amber, leather and white musk. Oud-led, the deepest of the four, and the drier of the two saffron-and-amber ouds.
The table puts saffron and amber side by side across the range so you can see exactly where each sits. Two rows are the answer, two are honest rows where it is absent, and the last is the option without oud.
The SOSA plan
Where saffron, amber and oud sit in each SOSA fragrance
The bottle, and where its saffron sits
The amber, the oud, and what surrounds both
SOSA Nawaab: Kashmir saffron in its top notes
SOSA Nawaab has amber in the base beside leather and white musk. Saffron meets white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and aged tobacco leaf. Oud-led, dry and dark. View →
SOSA Ameeri: Persian saffron in its top notes
SOSA Ameeri has amber in the base beside soft oudh and white musk. Saffron opens with pink pepper and bergamot over Taif rose and Indian sandalwood. Softer and rosier. View →
SOSA Mastani: carries neither saffron nor amber
SOSA Mastani carries oudh, but its warmth is Madagascar vanilla and tonka under night-blooming jasmine and Damask rose. A different taste from this one. View →
SOSA Adaa: neither saffron nor amber, and no oud
SOSA Adaa is the lightest of the four, bergamot, cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. No oud, no saffron, no amber. View →
SOSA Zaffran: saffron and sweet amber, no oud
SOSA Zaffran is a saffron sweet-amber perfume oil, ₹599 for 10ml, ₹1,799 for 50ml, ₹3,499 for 100ml. Radiant, and it carries no oud, so choose it only if oud is optional for you.
If your taste is the frame with oud inside it, the first two rows are your answer and the choice is yours. If it is the frame without oud, the last row is. The wider question of saffron in perfume is taken up in saffron in perfume, and the amber side is mapped in amber fragrances. If you want the whole oud map before deciding, the three ouds sets out what each is doing. And if oud is the part you find hardest, oud without the smoke is the companion guide. Or write to us and we will reply.
For saffron and amber with oud, rose in front: Ameeri at ₹385 is Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot over Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, on soft oudh, amber and white musk. The rosier, softer of the two saffron-and-amber ouds, with oud as depth rather than statement.
Three rows, two attars and one perfume oil. Choose the first or second if oud is the point, and the third only if saffron and amber matter more to you than oud does. The attars start at a 3ml, and Zaffran at a 10ml.
The SOSA specification for oud with saffron and amber
Choose the company you want saffron and amber to keep
The first two rows are 3ml. The 6ml and 12ml of the same composition are the right purchase after a full season, not instead of it: ₹399 for 3ml, ₹699 for 6ml, ₹1,199 for 12ml for Nawaab and ₹385 for 3ml, ₹679 for 6ml, ₹1,165 for 12ml for Ameeri. Zaffran runs ₹599 for 10ml, ₹1,799 for 50ml, ₹3,499 for 100ml. SOSA Mastani and SOSA Adaa carry neither saffron nor amber, so they are not on this table. The boxed set of three from ₹1,055 holds Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin for the attars and nothing further; how far a fragrance carries depends on skin, dose, clothing and the weather, and varies from person to person. Nobody can promise you what anyone else will think of it, and I am not going to. A patch test on first use is the only advice I will give on skin. Ours is a contact page and a person who replies; Ask for an attar recommendation and tell us which of the two you lean towards.

A note from Sonal
Most of the guides in this series have a sentence in them where I have to tell you what the range does not have, and I am used to writing it. This one has the opposite problem. Oud with saffron and amber is not a gap I have to bridge, because both Nawaab and Ameeri carry it, and I do not want a careful reader to be told otherwise by me or by anyone else. The range has amber in two bottles, and it has saffron in two.
What the question is really asking is which company you want that frame to keep. In Nawaab, Kashmir saffron meets white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and aged tobacco leaf, and amber sits beside leather. In Ameeri, Persian saffron meets pink pepper and bergamot, then Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, and amber sits beside soft oudh. Same two notes, two completely different perfumes, and I composed them that way on purpose.
If it turns out that the saffron and amber are what you love and the oud is incidental, Zaffran is the bottle for that, and I would rather name it than sell you an attar you will not wear. Nobody can promise you what anyone else will think of how you smell, and your own preference is the only part that was ever yours. Buy the 3ml, use one dab, and judge it at hour three. A portion of every purchase supports Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Does SOSA have an attar with saffron and amber?
Yes, two. SOSA Nawaab has Kashmir saffron in its top and amber in its base, and SOSA Ameeri has Persian saffron in its top and amber in its base. Both carry oud as well. Nawaab is dry and dark, with tobacco leaf and leather; Ameeri is rosier and softer, with Taif rose and soft oudh. There is no gap here to bridge.
Which has more saffron, Nawaab or Ameeri?
I cannot give you percentages, because a note list does not carry them and I will not invent any. What I can say is where the saffron sits. In both it is a top note. In Ameeri it opens the composition, with pink pepper and bergamot, over rose. In Nawaab it sits with the white royal oud and aged tobacco leaf. A 3ml of each is how you find out.
Does Mastani have saffron or amber?
No. SOSA Mastani carries oudh in its base, but it is built on night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Madagascar vanilla and tonka, with no saffron and no amber in its pyramid. It is a lovely oud, and the wrong one for this taste. If you want it, say so; otherwise take Ameeri or Nawaab.
What is Zaffran, and is it an attar?
SOSA Zaffran is a saffron sweet-amber perfume oil with no oud, at ₹599 for the 10ml, and it comes in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml. It is one of SOSA's six perfume oils, a different format from the four attars. Choose it if saffron and amber matter more than oud to you.
How long do the saffron and amber attars last on skin?
SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin for all four attars, and nothing beyond that. How long you can smell one and how far it carries depend on your skin, the dose, what you are wearing and the weather, and they vary from person to person. A longer figure would be a promise I cannot keep for your wrist.
To compare both saffron-and-amber ouds, boxed: The Attar Trio from ₹1,055 holds Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, one of each. It lets you hear the same saffron-and-amber frame in two companies, dry and rosy, and find out which one is yours, with Mastani alongside as the sweet one that carries neither.
