Where should a scent machine go in a hair transplant clinic reception?
On the air path, not on the console table. Placement is an airflow decision and it is the single most common thing clinics get wrong, because the question feels like an interiors question and gets answered by whoever chose the furniture. Here is the whole rule in one paragraph. First, find the path. Air enters your reception at the door and leaves through the AC returns, and it takes a particular route between the two - you can trace it in an afternoon with nothing more than an incense stick or a thin ribbon taped to a pencil, held at chest height and walked slowly from the entrance inwards. That route is where the machine goes, because a diffuser is a device for putting something into moving air, and air that is not moving carries nothing. Second, height. Roughly a metre off the floor. The reason mounting options matter here is simple - if the machine can only stand on a surface, it can only go where there is a surface, and the air rarely agrees with the furniture.

Trace the air before you choose the spot
The console table by the door is an aesthetic answer to an airflow question
Do the test properly and it takes twenty minutes. Take an incense stick, or a thin ribbon taped to the end of a pencil, and stand just inside the entrance at chest height with the AC running as it normally does. Watch which way the smoke or ribbon goes, then walk slowly inwards, stopping every couple of metres. You are looking for the line the room's air actually takes from the door towards the returns - it is rarely the straight line you would guess, and in most clinic receptions it hugs one wall. The machine goes on that line. If the pretty console table is not on it, the console table keeps the orchid and the machine goes on a wall bracket. Do it once a season, because a room with the AC on in May behaves differently from the same room in December with the doors open.
Tip: Do the test with the entrance door in its normal state - propped open if that is how you actually run the clinic.

Get the height and the return right
About a metre up, and never in the suction of a return grille
Two errors here and they look nothing alike. Too low - a unit on the floor or on a low plinth - and the output tends to stay low, pooling and getting stirred around by feet rather than distributed. Too high, or too close to a ceiling return, and you are feeding the extract rather than the room; the air at a return grille is on its way out of the space, and a machine placed there is an efficient way to scent your ductwork. A metre off the floor on the supply side of the room is the honest default. The exception is deliberate HVAC mounting, which is a different technique altogether: putting the source into air that is being pushed into the space is how a single machine carries scent along a corridor and past closed cabins, and it is worth doing with your facilities engineer rather than improvising.
Tip: Anything touching the clinical air handling - ducting, filtration, pressure - is your facilities engineer's call, not a fragrance supplier's.

Protect the two people the plume finds first
Your receptionist and whoever is in the nearest chair
The two worst positions in the room are both occupied by people who cannot move. A machine tucked behind the front desk gives your receptionist eight hours of the strongest concentration in the building, which is how a level quietly gets turned down without anyone telling you, or quietly turned up because the room reads as empty from the doorway. A machine aimed at the seating gives the same treatment to whoever waits longest. So: off the desk, out from behind it, never pointed at a chair, and keep at least one seating area effectively unscented - a corner out of the air path where somebody can sit without having to say anything. Staff should be able to switch the machine off in seconds, and if a patient objects the answer is to reduce or switch off rather than to explain.

I get asked where the machine should go and the person asking almost always has a spot in mind already. It is the console table by the door, or the shelf behind reception under the logo, and it is chosen because that is where the machine will look right. I understand the instinct completely - it is the same instinct that produced the rest of a well-designed reception - but it is being applied to the one object in the room whose job has nothing to do with where it is seen from.
A diffuser puts fragrance into moving air. If the air where you put it is not moving, it scents its own square metre and you conclude the machine is underpowered, and then you buy a bigger one and put that in the same still corner. So trace the air first: an incense stick at chest height, the AC running as it normally does, walked slowly in from the entrance. Twenty minutes, and it tells you more than any specification sheet.
