Why nobody names it: the top is bergamot, green cardamom and neroli, and that is what people meet. The cedar arrives at hour two or three.
What it does: it keeps the jasmine and magnolia from going soft, and stops the musk reading powdery. Structure rather than character.
What it is not: a cedar fragrance. Adaa is a fresh composition with a cedar base, and we will not describe it the other way round.
2. What it is actually doing there, in mechanical terms. Three jobs. It takes the roundness out of the jasmine sambac and magnolia, which would otherwise turn creamy and slightly sweet by mid-afternoon. It stops the white musk reading as powdery, which is what musk does when nothing dry is beside it. And it extends the life of the whole thing, because cedar molecules are heavy and slow and hold lighter materials in place. Remove the cedar and Adaa would not become less woody so much as less structured — softer, sweeter and shorter.
3. Why the vocabulary fails you here. Ask someone to describe a cedar-containing fragrance and they reach for words about texture rather than about smell: crisp, clean, sharp, papery, cool, dry. That is cedar being perceived correctly and named incorrectly, and it happens because cedar contributes an absence — of sweetness, of roundness — rather than a presence. You notice what it removes, not what it adds, and human scent vocabulary is very poorly equipped for subtraction.
4. The formal name for this combination is woody musk. Cedar and a clean white musk together produce a recognised sub-family: a soft, warm, skin-like diffusion with a dry woody facet rather than a powdery or soapy one. It is the closest thing in the SOSA range to a clean skin scent, and it is the reason Adaa is described so often as smelling like "a very good version of nothing". That is a compliment and an accurate description of what woody musk does.
5. And what this does not mean. Adaa is not a cedar fragrance and we will not describe it as one. If you want cedar as the headline — pale, papery, with nothing in front of it — no SOSA attar does that; cedar appears here as this base note and as cedar smoke in the titan (₹500) and Siren (₹489) solid perfumes, and nothing more. Adaa is a fresh composition with a cedar base, which is a genuinely good thing and a different thing, and the distinction is worth ₹379 to you before you buy rather than after.
Why base notes go unnamed, in every fragrance you own
Perfume is sold on its first twenty minutes and lived in for the following six hours, and those two experiences are described by different parts of the composition. Top notes are volatile, bright and easy to name — citrus, spice, a green leaf — because they are close to smells you encounter in a kitchen. Base notes are heavy, slow and largely unlike anything you meet in daily life, so the words are simply not there. Ask anyone to name the base of the fragrance they have worn for five years and most will not manage it, which says nothing about their nose and everything about the vocabulary.
There is a second reason, which is adaptation. You stop registering a constant smell within about twenty minutes, and the base of a fragrance is by definition the most constant part of it. So the phase in which the cedar is fully present is also the phase in which you have stopped receiving it. Other people have not — they meet you at three in the afternoon and smell cedarwood and white musk without any of the citrus you associate with the bottle. In a real sense, the base is what you smell like to everybody except yourself, which is a good argument for choosing a fragrance on its base rather than its opening.
The three decisions this changes
AdaaFrom ₹379If you have smelled Adaa on a card or on a wrist for five minutes, you have met bergamot, green cardamom and neroli and nothing else. The fragrance you will actually be wearing all day only exists from about hour two onwards. That is the case for every attar and most sprays, and it is the single reason we sell a 3ml size at ₹379: an oil needs skin and hours, and no amount of in-shop sniffing substitutes for a working day.The four woods, and where each one is in the SOSA range
Adaa occupies two rows of this table at once — cedar and woody musk — which is exactly why it is hard to name. Read the third column for where the range stops.
| The wood | What it actually smells like | Where it is in the SOSA range |
|---|---|---|
| Woody musk ★ | not a wood and not quite a smell — a soft, warm, skin-like diffusion that makes everything above it read cleaner and last longer; "woody musk" means a musk with a dry woody facet rather than a powdery or soapy one | white musk with cedarwood in the Adaa base — the closest thing in the range to a clean woody-musk skin scent |
| Cedar (dry wood) ★ | dry, pencil-shaving, slightly pencil-box and slightly resinous — the driest of the common woods, with no creaminess and no sweetness of its own | a base note in Adaa, sitting under bergamot, cardamom and white musk; and as cedar smoke in the titan and Siren solid perfumes |
| Sandalwood (creamy wood) | creamy, milky, soft-edged, faintly lactonic — the opposite of dry; it rounds everything it is put beside and is the reason a woody fragrance can feel comforting rather than austere | Indian sandalwood in Ameeri, beside Taif rose; and Mysore sandalwood in Nawaab, beside white royal oud and Kashmir saffron. It is also the carrier oil under every SOSA attar |
| Oud / agarwood (dark wood) | dense, resinous, animalic at the edges, medicinal in some distillations — the heaviest wood in common use and the one most people either love immediately or find suffocating | white royal oud leads Nawaab; a soft oudh sits deep in Ameeri |
| Vetiver (rooty, earthy) | a grass root rather than a wood at all — earthy, smoky-green, slightly bitter, cooling on skin; grouped with woods because it behaves like one in a composition | nothing wearable. SOSA makes a vetiver car perfume and nothing else with vetiver in it. There is no vetiver attar and no vetiver solid |
| Read the third column before the second. Four of the five entries above are notes SOSA uses, and one is a note SOSA does not make in any wearable form. We would rather lose the sale than sell you a rose-sandalwood attar because you searched for vetiver. Both starred rows are what the Adaa base is made of. Neither of them is a lead position in this range, and the vetiver row is not a position at all. | ||

How to actually hear the cedar in what you already own
Dab once in the morning, then smell a sleeve rather than your wrist. Fabric holds the base without adapting to it, and your own skin has stopped reporting by mid-morning. A shirt cuff at four in the afternoon is the most accurate instrument most people have access to, and it costs nothing.
Compare hour one with hour four deliberately. Write down two or three words at each point. The first list will be citrus and spice; the second will be dry, cool, clean or crisp. Those second words are cedar and white musk, and once you have made the association consciously you will start recognising them in other fragrances you own — which is the real use of this exercise.
Do not add a second dab to make the base louder. It arrives when it arrives; more product makes the whole composition closer and heavier rather than accelerating the dry-down. An attar persists rather than projects, sitting within about an arm's length for six to eight hours, and a cedar-and-musk base is quiet by nature. If you want a woody scent noticed across a room, an alcohol-based eau de parfum is the right format and we would rather say so.
What to buy
The ladder for a reader who has just realised they have been wearing cedar for years without knowing. The last row is for the reader who now wants more of it than we can supply.
| Buy | What it is | Wears | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adaa ★ | Cedarwood and white musk under a fresh top — the fragrance this page is about — cedarwood and white musk in the base under bergamot, green cardamom and neroli; the closest thing here to a clean woody-musk skin scent | 6–8 hours per dab | 3ml ₹379 |
| Nawaab | White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron — if the base taught you that you want more weight rather than more dryness — oud, Mysore sandalwood and saffron | 6–8 hours per dab | 3ml ₹399 |
| Ameeri | Taif rose over Indian sandalwood — if you liked the softness of the musk more than the dryness of the cedar — Taif rose over Indian sandalwood | 6–8 hours per dab | 3ml ₹385 |
| titan (solid) | Burnt wood, black pepper, cedar smoke — if it turns out the cedar you like is the smoky kind; burnt wood and cedar smoke in a solid rather than an oil | 6–8 hours | ₹500 |
| Buy nothing here | If you want the Adaa base without the top — cedar and musk alone — we do not make it. That is a woody-musk soliflore and it is a real gap here; a dry-wood specialist is the right place to look | Not our sale to make | ₹0 |
Versailles
When I was building Adaa the base came first, which is not the order most people imagine. I wanted a clean, dry skin scent — white musk with cedarwood, warm but not powdery — and everything above it exists to give that base a way to arrive. The bergamot and green cardamom are the door; the cedar and musk are the room. People buy it for the door and live in the room, which is true of nearly every fragrance and almost never said out loud.
I find it genuinely funny that nobody calls it woody. They call it fresh, or clean, or say it smells "expensive but quiet", and every one of those impressions is the cedar doing its job. It is a material that works by taking things away — sweetness, roundness, softness — and we have no vocabulary for absence. The test I suggest to anyone curious is the sleeve test at four in the afternoon. It is the fastest way to introduce yourself to a note you have been wearing for years.
What I will not do is rename it. Adaa is a fresh composition with a cedar base, not a cedar attar, and when someone comes to me wanting cedar in front I tell them I do not make one and point them to a house that does. ₹379 for 3ml is a cheap way to find out whether a cedar base is enough for you. A portion of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
