People use the word attar loosely, so let me be precise. An attar is a concentrated perfume oil worn on the skin, with no alcohol. A regular perfume - an EDP or EDT - is fragrance dissolved in alcohol and sprayed. That single difference, oil versus alcohol, changes everything about how the two behave.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, and I make both kinds of thinking - but the attar is the most Indian thing I make. Here is what it actually is, how it differs, and how to wear it.

Quick answers — read this first
What is attar perfume? An attar is a concentrated perfume oil worn directly on the skin, with no alcohol. It sits close, releases slowly and lasts. SOSA attars are real composed blends, not single raw essential oils.

How is attar different from regular perfume? Regular perfume is fragrance in an alcohol base that you spray; it projects then evaporates. Attar is alcohol-free oil that you dab or roll on; it stays close to skin and lasts longer.

Is attar the same as essential oil? No. A single essential oil is one raw material. A SOSA attar is a composed perfume - several accords blended by a trained perfumer and made IFRA-compliant and skin-safe.
The short answer
Short answer: Attar is a concentrated, alcohol-free perfume oil worn on the skin; regular perfume is fragrance in an alcohol spray.
Key difference: no alcohol. Oil sits close and lasts; alcohol projects louder at first but flashes off faster.
Not the same as: a single essential oil. SOSA attars are composed blends, not one raw material.
SOSA attars: alcohol-free, IFRA-compliant, skin-safe oils in 3ml/6ml/12ml roll-ons, from ₹379, made in Pune.
Attar vs alcohol perfume — wear time on skin (illustrative, not clinical)SOSA attar oil — close, all-day on warm skinAlcohol EDP — bright open, fades by afternoonCheap alcohol spray — sharp, gone in hours
Illustrative only. Concentrated oil attars sit close to the skin and release slowly; alcohol perfumes project more at first but flash off faster, especially in heat.
Straight answer
What is attar perfume, and how is it different?

An attar is a concentrated perfume oil worn directly on the skin, with no alcohol. You dab or roll a little onto pulse points, and it warms and releases scent slowly through the day. A regular perfume is fragrance dissolved in alcohol, sprayed into the air and onto skin - the alcohol gives a loud opening but evaporates quickly, carrying the scent up and away. The practical difference: attar sits close and lasts; alcohol perfume projects then fades. SOSA attars are alcohol-free, IFRA-compliant and skin-safe, and they are real composed blends - not single essential oils.

In one line: attar = alcohol-free perfume oil that sits close and lasts; regular perfume = alcohol spray that projects then fades.
New to attars? Adaa is the easy first step - bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk, light enough for daytime and office.

What an attar is

Traditionally, attar refers to fragrance captured in an oil base rather than alcohol. In practice today, a good attar is a concentrated perfume oil you wear on the skin. Because it is oil, it does not evaporate the way an alcohol spray does - it clings, warms with your body heat and releases its notes gradually. That is why a single roll of Nawaab can last from morning to night.

Attar, defined
A concentrated perfume oil worn directly on the skin, with no alcohol carrier. It is applied in tiny amounts - a dab or a roll - and it sits close, lasting for hours. A SOSA attar is a composed perfume: several materials blended into an accord, made IFRA-compliant and skin-safe, not a single raw essential oil.

This last point matters, because the word attar is sometimes used for a bottle of raw essential oil. That is not what I make. Ameeri is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood, saffron and a soft oudh - several materials in balance, the way a perfume is built. The oil is just the carrier; the artistry is in the composition.

1
The base
Oil, not alcohol
The fragrance lives in an oil rather than alcohol. No alcohol means no flash-off and no sting - the scent stays close and lasts, and it is gentle on sensitive or freshly shaved skin.
2
The application
A little, on pulse points
You roll or dab a small amount onto wrists, neck or behind the ears. Because it is concentrated, you use far less than you would spray - which is also why a small 3ml bottle lasts a long time.

How it differs from regular perfume

A regular perfume - eau de parfum or eau de toilette - is fragrance oil dissolved in alcohol. When you spray it, the alcohol evaporates almost instantly, throwing the scent into the air. That is the dramatic opening people love. But once the alcohol has gone, only the remaining oils stay, and in Indian heat that happens fast.

Oil vs alcohol
How the two are built and how they behave
Feature Attar (oil) Regular perfume (alcohol)
Base Concentrated oil, no alcohol Fragrance in alcohol
Format Roll-on or dab Spray
Opening Quiet, blooms on skin Loud, immediate
Longevity Long, close to skin Shorter, fades faster in heat
Skin feel No alcohol sting Can sting or dry

So the difference is not really about quality - both can be beautifully made. It is about behaviour. If you want a scent that announces you and you enjoy reapplying, alcohol perfume suits that. If you want something that lives quietly on your skin all day and is kind to it, an attar is built for that.

The one thing to remember
It all comes down to the carrier: oil clings and lasts; alcohol lifts and leaves.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but the attar is the most Indian thing I make - a concentrated perfume oil, no alcohol, meant to bloom on warm skin the way our climate asks for.

Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and skin-safe, built from real materials - Taif rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, jasmine sambac - and IFRA-compliant. Because it is an oil, you apply a little and it stays close all day, without the headache an alcohol spray can give.

I would rather you bought well than bought ours by reflex. If a local attar is pure and honestly described, wear it happily. I just wanted to make an attar with the precision of a trained nose and the honesty of a clean label.
