Musty is a humidity reading, not a fragrance problem

Musty is the most misdiagnosed smell in an Indian home, because people treat it as an odour that has arrived and can be displaced, when it is actually a report on the condition of the building's materials. The smell is produced by microbial activity - mould and mildew colonies establishing on surfaces that have remained damp - and those organisms release their own volatile compounds as they metabolise. That is what the nose is detecting. It follows that the smell is generated continuously at the site of the growth, in proportion to how active the growth is, and that anything which does not change the moisture will not change the smell. The materials involved are consistent, and knowing them shortens the search. Anything soft and slow to dry is a candidate: mattresses, sofa cushions, curtains, rugs and carpet underlay, stacked bedding, clothes stored without airing, and the fabric-heavy interiors of wardrobes. So are enclosed volumes with almost no air movement - the backs of built-in cupboards, storerooms, spaces under sinks, and the strip of wall behind a large piece of furniture pushed flat against it. Cold surfaces matter too: an external wall that stays cooler than the room will condense moisture out of humid air onto itself, which is why the musty patch is so often on the wall facing the weather. The single most useful reframing is from impression to number. Whether a room feels damp is a matter of opinion and adaptation; what its relative humidity is, is a fact. Sustained above roughly sixty per cent, household materials support microbial growth comfortably. Below that, growth slows substantially, and below about fifty it largely stops being a practical problem. A small digital hygrometer costs a few hundred rupees, shows the reading continuously, and settles the question. It also makes every subsequent action legible: the household can see that opening the windows for twenty minutes dropped the bedroom from sixty-eight to fifty-nine, or that the storeroom is at seventy-four while the living room is at fifty-six. Cheap: moisture absorber tubs in wardrobes, storerooms and under sinks, replaced when saturated; and in a genuinely damp property, a dehumidifier, which is the only device that removes water at a meaningful rate. There is one category that is not a fragrance question at all and should be named without softening: active water ingress. A seepage patch that darkens after rain, a leaking pipe joint, water tracking down from a terrace or a neighbour's bathroom, a blocked drain or a failed waterproofing membrane - these are building repairs. They will keep supplying moisture indefinitely, no drying regime will keep ahead of them, and persistent damp of this kind is worth getting properly assessed rather than managed. Any advice that skips this step in favour of a scented product is not advice. Only once the room is dry does fragrance have a coherent role, and it is a good one. A dry room that has been musty for weeks smells of nothing much, and giving it a settled character is exactly what a household wants at the end of a difficult season.
