The two steps of diffusion

It helps to separate the process into its two parts, because each format handles them differently. The first part is getting the fragrance into the air at all. The second is getting that airborne fragrance to spread evenly so the whole room smells of it, not just the spot next to the source.

Step one, evaporation, is governed by how volatile the fragrance materials are and how much energy they get. More surface area and more heat both push more fragrance into the air. A wide, shallow dish evaporates faster than a narrow neck; a warmed wax evaporates faster than a cool liquid. This is the lever a format pulls to control how strong the scent is.

Step two, spreading, is mostly about air. Pure molecular diffusion is slow; on its own it would take a long time for a scent to cross a room. In real homes, air currents do most of the distribution, which is why placement and airflow matter so much. The fragrance evaporates at the source, and the room's air carries it everywhere else.

Candles and wax melts add something diffusion alone cannot, warmth and, in the candle's case, the light and ritual of a flame. I think of them as the evening layer: stronger, more present, tied to a moment rather than running all day. One honest note on all of this: diffusion adds fragrance to the air, it does not remove anything from it. None of these formats cleans or purifies the air.
