Should My Interior Designer Plan Scent-Machine Placement While Designing the Clinic?

Yes - and specifically during the services coordination round, when power, data, lighting and AC grilles are being resolved together, not at the end when the joinery is being installed. At that moment a scent machine costs nothing to accommodate, because everything it needs is already being drawn for something else. Afterwards it costs a surface-mounted socket, a visible cable, or a position chosen from whatever was left. Give your designer three things and nothing more. First, a power point at the intended position, roughly a metre off the floor - the machine runs on DC 12V/1A at 5W, so it is an ordinary socket in an unusual place rather than a special requirement. Second, a mounting position defined relative to the air conditioning, not relative to the furniture: near where conditioned air enters the reception, away from any return grille, angled into open volume, and not at a workstation where somebody sits all day. Designers position objects by composition, and composition will put this behind the desk or in the corner that balances the joinery, both of which are wrong for reasons unrelated to taste. Third - and this is the one that actually matters - a written list of the rooms that must stay unscented: procedure and graft rooms, post-procedure and recovery areas, and photography or documentation rooms. Put it in writing, because an enthusiastic designer will otherwise specify a niche for a diffuser in the recovery area as a kindness, and it will be built before anyone reads it back. Post-operative scalp is an open wound; those rooms are environmentally separate and that is not a preference to be balanced against a scheme. There are two useful extras if your project is at the right stage. If your clinic will have a long corridor with closed cabins, ask the designer to coordinate with the HVAC contractor about whether a supply-side mount is feasible - though duct pressure, fresh-air intake and filtration are engineering questions and belong to that contractor, not to the designer and not to me. And ask for a reachable position, because if a patient ever objects to the fragrance the answer is to switch it off in seconds rather than defend it. Retrofitting is entirely possible and I do it with clinics constantly; it is simply always worse, and always more visible. Whether SOSA can support installation or mounting is worth checking rather than assuming. All of this is an ambience decision with no clinical, therapeutic or air-quality claim, it works alongside cleaning and ventilation and is never a way to mask another smell, and the clinician's judgement overrides any drawing in their own rooms.
