Architects are used to being handed fragrance as an afterthought, in the form of a brochure and a vague instruction to make the store smell nice. What they can actually use is three sentences about power, position and airflow - and all three have to arrive before the joinery drawings are signed off.
Quick answers — read this first
Should the architect plan the placement? Yes, and the brief is shorter than you think. A socket where the machine will live, a mounting position defined relative to the air-conditioning supply, and an instruction that the machine is not at the entrance. That is the whole thing. You are not asking your architect to choose a fragrance or specify a brand - you are asking them to reserve a position on the air path and put a power point at it, which is a five-minute change on a drawing and a genuine nuisance once the walls are closed.
What does the architect actually need to know? Numbers, not adjectives. A SOSA Vaayu is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm, 0.9kg, DC 12V/1A at 5W, and can be freestanding, wall-mounted, or mounted into the air handling. It runs under 38dB. Give them those five figures and they can recess it, bracket it or hide it behind a plinth without asking you anything else. The dimension line is what unlocks the joinery detail.
What if it is too late and the store is built? Retrofitting works. It is simply always worse, and worth knowing that before you accept it. The position ends up chosen by the electrics rather than by the air, which usually means a shelf near the till or a plug by the door - and the door is the one place a machine should never go. You can still do a good job with a wall bracket and a long enough run, and the machine itself is ₹11,999 either way. No one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, dwell, conversion or spend, so this is a coherence decision, not a business case.
The short answer
Short answer: yes, and the brief is three lines: a power point where the machine will live, a mounting position defined relative to the air-conditioning supply, and an instruction that it is never at the entrance. Give the architect the numbers - 165 x 80.5 x 215mm, 0.9kg, 5W, under 38dB - and they can detail it. Retrofitting works and is always worse.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), positioned on the drawing well inside the store on the supply-air path, or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) if the finished boutique will be a single room under about 750 sq ft.
Next step: send the reflected ceiling plan and the AC layout with supply and return grilles marked, and we will mark the machine position your architect should draw - Ask for a retail scenting plan.
Nothing in this brief mentions a fragrance, and that is deliberate. What an architect can act on is power, dimension and airflow; the profile is a decision you make later and can change without touching the building.
The machine being drawn in - tap to see the specification
Should my architect plan scent-machine placement before my watch store opens?
Yes, and the brief you give them is three lines long. Line one: a power point at the position where the machine will actually live, not a spare socket somewhere convenient. A SOSA Vaayu draws DC 12V/1A at 5W, so this is an ordinary socket rather than a services problem, and that is precisely why it gets forgotten - nobody in a services coordination meeting worries about five watts. Line two: the position is defined relative to the air-conditioning supply, not relative to the furniture. A machine well inside the store, near where conditioned air enters and away from the return grille, will be carried across the floor by the air that is already moving. A machine placed for the joinery and away from the air path will do a smaller version of the same job and you will spend the next year turning it up. If the store has central AC, an HVAC mount is the cleanest answer of all and it needs to be drawn, not improvised. Line three: never at the entrance. This is the one architects instinctively get wrong, because the entrance is where the customer arrives and it feels like the place to make an impression. A street or mall-facing door that opens constantly exchanges the air near it many times an hour, so anything you put there is diluted and gone, and the compensation - turning the level up - makes the interior overpowering while the threshold still smells of the corridor. The threshold is not where a store's scent lives. If your fit-out can afford a lobby or an air curtain, that is an architectural answer to an architectural problem and worth more than any setting. Alongside those three lines, hand over five numbers so the joinery can be detailed without further questions: 165 x 80.5 x 215mm, 0.9kg, 5W, under 38dB, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable. With those, an architect can recess the unit, bracket it above a display run, or put it into the air handling, and nobody has to see it. Notice that none of this mentions a fragrance. The profile is chosen later, it can be changed without touching the building, and it is the part of the decision that does not need an architect at all. Now, the honest part: retrofitting works. If the store is already built you are not stuck. It is simply always worse, because the position ends up chosen by the electrics - a shelf near the till, a plug by the door - and you accept a visible unit or a trailing lead. The machine costs ₹11,999 either way, and under about 750 sq ft the right specification is a SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, which still deserves a planned position rather than a spare plug. One last thing to keep out of the brief: no one can promise that ambient scent moves footfall, dwell, conversion or spend, and if a consultant hands your architect a figure, it is a sales document.Ask for a retail scenting plan and send the AC layout.
Three lines to the architect: a socket at the real position, a position set by the AC supply, and never at the door. Five numbers for the joiner. Retrofitting works and is always worse. ₹11,999 for the machine, ₹1,899 under 750 sq ft.
The unit being drawn in is one SOSA Vaayu - 165 x 80.5 x 215mm at 0.9kg, DC 12V/1A, 5W, under 38dB, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, in black or white. ₹11,999. If the finished store will be one room under 750 sq ft, draw in a Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead and keep the socket.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 165 x 80.5 x 215mm, 0.9kg, DC 12V/1A at 5W, under 38dB, black or white. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, auto-stop and key-lock. Freestanding, wall-mounted or mounted into the air handling.
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. For a single trading room this is the correct specification at ₹1,899 - and it is worth giving it a considered position on the drawing rather than leaving it to the till counter by default.
SOSA Vaayu: 1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 165 x 80.5 x 215mm, 0.9kg, DC 12V/1A at 5W, under 38dB, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, auto-stop, key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and continuity of supply should be confirmed with SOSA before you plan around it.
Send these three sentences and the five dimensions. Anything longer will be summarised by somebody, and the wrong line will be the one that survives.
1
Line one - put the socket where the machine goes
Five watts is why this gets forgotten in a services meeting
A machine that draws 5W does not appear on anyone's load schedule, so it never gets discussed, and on handover day it ends up plugged into whatever is nearest. Name the position on the drawing and ask for a dedicated point at it. If you want the unit invisible, ask for it in a recess or on a bracket above the display run, and give the joiner the dimensions: 165 x 80.5 x 215mm at 0.9kg. The cost of this line is one socket; the cost of skipping it is a visible box in a room where every other object was chosen.
Tip: Put the socket at mounting height, not at skirting level, if the machine is going on a bracket.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
Line two - locate it by the air, not the furniture
The supply grille decides where the machine should be, and the return decides where it should not
Air in a store is already moving, and a machine placed in that movement is carried; one placed outside it has to work harder for a smaller result. Ask the architect to position the unit well inside the store, in the path of conditioned air as it enters, and out of the pull of the return grille, which will otherwise take the fragrance straight back into the system. Where there is central air handling, an HVAC mount is the cleanest option and must be drawn rather than improvised. You scent volume rather than floor area, so a double-height boutique should be flagged to whoever is sizing it - the cubic figure moves faster than the square-foot one.
Tip: Ask for the supply and return grille positions on the same drawing as the machine. Two drawings is how this goes wrong.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
The threshold is where the air is exchanged, which makes it the worst position in the building
Every instinct says scent the entrance. The entrance is the one place that cannot hold a level: a street or mall-facing door that opens constantly swaps that air many times an hour, so whatever you put there is diluted immediately, and turning the machine up to compensate overpowers the interior while the doorway still smells of outside. Accept that the threshold is not where a store's scent lives. If the fit-out allows an entrance lobby or an air curtain, that is a building answer to a building problem and worth far more than a setting. Otherwise place well inside and let the air path carry it forward.
One Sukoon ₹1,899, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
Everything an architect can usefully do about scenting concerns power, dimension and airflow, and none of it concerns the fragrance - which is why the brief is three lines and can be written before you have chosen a profile.
The profile can change any time without touching the building; the position cannot change once the joinery is closed.
The numbers your joiner needs: SOSA Vaayu is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm at 0.9kg, DC 12V/1A at 5W, black or white, and runs under 38dB. ₹11,999.
Mounted rather than placed: Wall and HVAC mounting is what lets one machine serve an entrance area, a showroom and a lounge from a drawn position. ₹11,999.
Give your architect the specification below and let them detail around it. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and continuity of supply should be confirmed with SOSA before it appears on a maintenance schedule; installation, AMC, warranty terms, bulk or corporate pricing, GST and corporate invoicing, delivery timing, minimum order quantities and multi-site rollout support are likewise not published and should be confirmed with us directly rather than assumed by a project manager. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA watch-boutique specification
What to put on the drawing, by finished floor size
Brief the building, choose the fragrance later. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting, seating or case layout; it is never used to cover a fit-out, corridor or carpet smell, and a new store should be ventilated and run unscented for its first weeks whatever the drawing says. And plainly: no one can promise that ambient scent moves footfall, dwell, conversion or spend, so no part of this belongs in a project business case. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
The best version of this conversation I ever have is with an architect rather than an owner, and it lasts four minutes. They want three things from me: how big is it, how much power does it draw, and where does it want to be. Once they have 165 by 80.5 by 215 millimetres, five watts, and near the supply air but away from the door, they stop needing me. Everything after that is their job and they are better at it than I am.
The version I have with owners takes longer, because the owner wants to talk about the fragrance and the fragrance is the part that does not need planning. You can change a profile in an afternoon. You cannot move a socket after the walls are closed, and you certainly cannot move a return grille. So I try to get the building questions answered while they are still cheap, and leave the register conversation for a month when nobody is holding a programme.
If the store is already built, do not let anyone make you feel you have missed something irreversible. Retrofit is fine; it is just a compromise you should make knowingly, and the one compromise I would refuse is a position at the entrance. Hardware, for reference: from 1,500 sq ft a Vaayu at ₹11,999, under 750 sq ft a Sukoon at ₹1,899. Installation, AMC, warranty and bulk pricing are not published services, and cold-air refill oil is not sold separately today, so ask us before any of it goes on a schedule. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Should my architect plan scent-machine placement before my watch store opens?
Yes, and the brief is three lines: a power point at the position where the machine will actually live, a mounting position defined relative to the air-conditioning supply rather than to the furniture, and an instruction that it is never at the entrance. Add the physical numbers so the joinery can be detailed - 165 x 80.5 x 215mm, 0.9kg, DC 12V/1A at 5W, under 38dB, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable.
What information does an architect need about a scent machine?
Dimensions, weight, power draw, noise rating and mounting options - not a fragrance description. A SOSA Vaayu is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm, 0.9kg, DC 12V/1A at 5W, runs under 38dB and can be freestanding, wall-mounted or mounted into the air handling. With those five figures an architect can recess it, bracket it above a display run or hide it behind a plinth without asking a further question.
Why should the machine not be placed at the entrance?
Because the entrance is the one part of a store that cannot hold a level. A street or mall-facing door that opens constantly exchanges the air near it many times an hour, so anything placed there is diluted almost immediately. Turning the machine up to compensate makes the interior overpowering while the doorway still smells of the street or the corridor. Place it well inside the store on the air path instead.
Can a scent machine be retrofitted after the store is built?
Yes, and it is always a worse result than planning it. In a finished store the position is decided by where the electrics happen to be, which usually means a shelf near the till or a plug by the door, and you accept either a visible unit or a trailing lead. The machine costs the same either way - Rs 11,999 for a Vaayu, Rs 1,899 for a Sukoon - so what a retrofit costs you is the quality of the placement rather than money.
Should the scenting plan include a promised improvement in store performance?
No, and it should not appear in a project business case at all. No one can promise that ambient scent moves footfall, dwell time, conversion or spend, SOSA has run no research that would support a figure, and a consultant handing your architect a percentage is producing a sales document rather than a specification. The brief is about power, position and airflow, and that is all it needs to be.
The single-room specification: SOSA Sukoon covers roughly 270-320 sq ft and ships with three 15ml fragrances. ₹1,899, and it still wants a planned position.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference.
