Founder Diaries · More Reeds, Still Nothing
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles5 min readUpdated August 2026

I'll give you the honest answer straight away, because it saves you money: no — don't keep increasing the reeds. There's a point, around eight, where each new reed adds less than the last and just drinks more oil. If you want a scent that's much stronger, you've reached the edge of what reeds can do, and the fix is a different machine, not a fuller bundle of sticks.

Quick answer

Should I keep adding reeds? No. Up to about eight helps; beyond that you hit diminishing returns and burn oil for a difference you can barely notice.

Why does it stop working? Reeds are passive — once the air near the bottle is saturated, more sticks add nothing. Reach needs a method that pushes scent, and reeds don't.

Want much stronger? Change the method. SOSA Safar (₹3,999) actively projects scent — a genuine step up, not more of the same.

The short version
Short answer: No — stop at around eight reeds. Past that you spend money on oil, not strength. For much stronger scent, upgrade the method.
The pick: SOSA Safar (₹3,999) for a small room, or Sukoon (₹1,799) as the affordable active step-up.

The instinct is completely logical — if one reed gives a little scent and five give more, surely ten give more again. And for a while, that's true. Going from three reeds to five is a real, noticeable lift. Five to eight is a smaller but still worthwhile step if you want the space near the diffuser to smell fuller. But the curve flattens fast. By the time you're at eight reeds, the air immediately around the bottle is about as saturated as passive evaporation can make it. The reeds are already giving off scent as quickly as the still air can absorb and hold it. Add a ninth and tenth, and there simply isn't more "room" in that pocket of air for the extra evaporation to register. You've hit the ceiling.

And here's the cost of pushing past it: every reed you add pulls more oil up and evaporates it faster. So the reeds you're adding beyond eight aren't buying you strength — they're buying you a shorter bottle life. You'll be refilling weeks sooner for a scent that, honestly, smells the same as it did at eight reeds. That's the diminishing-returns trap in plain terms: you spend more and more oil for less and less benefit, until you're paying only in refills. I'd rather tell you that than watch you empty a lovely 130ml in three weeks chasing a strength it was never built to reach.

The honest breakdown
How the reed curve really behaves

1. Three to five reeds: a real, noticeable increase. Worth doing.

2. Five to eight reeds: a smaller lift in close-range fullness. Fine if you want it stronger by the bottle.

3. Eight and up: the air near the diffuser is saturated. Extra reeds add almost nothing — just faster oil use.

4. Any number of reeds: no change to reach. Projection depends on the method, not the count.

The honest caveat: if what you want is a stronger scent right beside the diffuser — on a desk you sit at, or a bedside table — then going to eight reeds is a perfectly good move and worth the faster oil use. This only becomes a dead end when the goal is "much stronger across the whole room". Reeds can't get there at any count.
What "much stronger" actually requires

When someone tells me they want a much stronger scent — the kind you notice the moment you walk in — they're describing projection, and projection needs energy behind the fragrance. A reed has none; it releases scent and waits for the room to move it. An active diffuser adds the missing ingredient: it uses a small pump to atomise the oil and physically push a fine mist outward, so the fragrance travels instead of lingering by the bottle. That's a genuine change in kind, not degree. It's the difference between a stronger whisper and an actual voice. No quantity of reeds crosses that line, which is exactly why adding them past eight feels like effort with no reward.

SOSA Safar waterless nebuliser for a much stronger, projecting scent
The step that actually feels stronger
SOSA Safar ₹3,999
A waterless, cordless nebuliser that atomises neat fragrance into a fine dry mist — drier and more perfume-like than an ultrasonic, with genuine projection. Catalogued for car and travel, but its cordless, high-throw design makes it an excellent on-demand strong scenter for a small room or bedroom. This is a change of method, which is what "much stronger" really needs.
The honest ladder
From reeds to a genuinely stronger scent
What you want Do this From
A gentle everyday scent 4–5 reeds ₹749
Stronger right by the bottle Up to 8 reeds — then stop ₹749
Much stronger, affordable, small room Sukoon ultrasonic + Hotel Collection ₹1,799
Strong perfume-like projection, on demand SOSA Safar — waterless nebuliser ₹3,999
Eight reeds is the sensible ceiling. Beyond it you buy refills, not strength — so put the money toward the method instead.
The honest core
Past about eight reeds you're not adding strength — you're just burning money.
Reeds saturate the air near the bottle and then stop rewarding you. A much stronger scent is a change of method, not a bigger bundle of sticks.
Frequently asked
Should I keep adding more reeds to get a stronger scent?
No. Adding reeds helps up to about eight, and after that you hit sharp diminishing returns. Each extra reed adds less strength than the one before while using more oil, so past eight you are mostly spending money and burning through fragrance for a difference you can barely notice. If you want a much stronger scent, the answer is a different diffusion method, not more reeds.
What is the ideal number of reeds?
For most rooms, four to five reeds give a comfortable everyday scent, and going up to about eight gives a fuller, stronger close-range presence. Eight is a sensible ceiling. Beyond that the room saturates near the diffuser and extra reeds add almost nothing except faster oil use. Use more reeds only if you want it stronger right beside the bottle, not because you expect it to fill the room.
Why does adding reeds stop making a difference?
Because a reed diffuser is passive. It evaporates oil into the still air around the bottle and cannot push scent across the room. Once you have enough reeds to saturate the air near the diffuser, adding more just crowds the same small pocket of air with more evaporating surface. The strength close by barely rises and the reach does not change, because reach depends on the method, not the reed count.
What should I do if I want a much stronger scent than reeds can give?
Change the method rather than the reed count. An active diffuser pushes fragrance out into the room instead of waiting for the air to move it. The SOSA Safar, a waterless cordless nebuliser at ₹3,999, atomises neat fragrance into a fine dry mist and gives strong, perfume-like projection in a small room or bedroom. That is the honest route to a much stronger scent, whereas more reeds simply burns money.
