Most advice on when to put a fragrance on was written for a car and a cloakroom, not for a crowded commute and a cold office. In an Indian working day the answer is less a matter of taste than of which stage of the fragrance you want to spend where.
Quick answers — read this first
Should I apply an attar before leaving or at the office? After you reach the office. The bright opening comes up fastest on warm skin, and a desk is a better place to judge it than a bus. One dab of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml.
When is applying at home the better call? When your day gives you no private minute at work, or the commute is the part you want scented. It is a fair choice. It simply spends the opening on the road.
How much attar do I use in a cooled office? One dab, on the chest or the side of the neck. A cooled room tends to open an oil more slowly, so give the skin a few minutes, then judge at hour three rather than adding a second dab.
The short answer
Short answer: After you reach the office. The opening is the loudest and least typical stage, so spend it at your desk, not in transit. One dab, judged at hour three.
The pick: One 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379, rolled on after you have been inside a few minutes. SOSA Khayaal is the clearer alternative if soft is the wrong word.
Next step: Run it as a week: home on one day, office the next, your choice on the third. Tell us your commute and we will say which fits.
The two clocks side by side, and the one dose that is the same on both. The recommendation is the second line: let the bottle ride in your bag during the commute and roll it on once you have arrived.
Adaa first; the two warmer attars answer a different question
Should I Apply a Fresh Attar Before Leaving Home, or After Reaching an Air-Conditioned Office?
After you reach the office, on most working days. The reason is about timing, not taste: the opening of a fresh attar is its loudest and least typical stage, and it should happen where you can judge it. Here is the case in five steps.
1. Spend the opening where you can judge it. The first twenty minutes of a fresh attar are citrus, green spice and white flower, the stage that changes fastest. Roll it on at home and it happens in a cab; roll it on at the office and you meet it at a desk.
2. Let the skin settle first. Arrive, spend a few minutes in the cooler air, then apply to skin that is dry and at rest. An oil opens as the skin warms it, so you read it more accurately once the walk in is behind you.
3. One dab, and no second to make up for a cool room. One dab is a whisper and two is a sentence. A cold office tempts you to add the second because you cannot smell the first at minute five. Resist for three days and judge at hour three.
4. Take Adaa, honestly described.SOSA Adaa at ₹379 opens with Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli, softens into jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang, and dries to white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. It carries no oudh. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin.
5. Know when the other answer is right. Apply before you leave if there is no private minute at work, or if the commute is the part you want scented. It is a legitimate choice with a different cost: the opening is spent on the road.
I cannot tell you how anyone else will react to it, and I will not guess. What I can give you is how the attar is built, and a one-week experiment that settles the clock on your own skin for the price of one 3ml.
Roll on one dab after you reach the office, once your skin has settled, and judge at hour three. SOSA Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml. Apply before leaving only if your day gives you no private minute.
What to buy, and when to roll it on
The product
SOSA Adaa, the lightest of the four attars and the only one with no oudh: an alcohol-free roll-on oil on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, hand-blended in Pune. The roll-on is what makes a desk application possible.
The size to start on
The 3ml, at ₹379. It travels in a work bag and is enough for a three-day test. The 6ml at ₹669 and 12ml at ₹1,149 come after.
Dabs, and where
One dab on the chest or the side of the neck, after you reach the office and have been inside for a few minutes. One dab is a whisper and two is a sentence.
At hour three
The bergamot and neroli have gone. What remains, by the published pyramid, is white musk with vetiver and cedarwood: dry and close.
What it costs to stay on it
Nothing beyond that first 3ml until the test is done. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin; rolling on at arrival keeps that span inside your working day.
I would put you on the second clock, because the opening is the one stage you cannot judge in a moving cab. A 3ml of Adaa lets you run both ways in a week. If the commute is the part of the day you want scented, say so, and I will tell you honestly whether Adaa suits that.
Buy one 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 and keep it in your work bag, not on your skin, until you arrive. Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli on top, jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang in the heart, white musk, vetiver and cedarwood underneath. An alcohol-free roll-on oil, hand-blended in Pune, with no oudh. One dab after you reach the office, judged at hour three.
Whichever clock you choose, the bottle is the same, and the choice among the four is smaller than it looks. A fresh daily attar for a working day wants a short bright top and a dry floor. SOSA makes four attars, all alcohol-free, DPG-free roll-on oils on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. One is built that way. The others are warmer on purpose.
₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml, ₹1,149 for 12ml. Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. The lightest of the four, with no oudh. Its opening is the stage the timing question is about, and its base is the stage you wear for the rest of the day.
₹385 for 3ml, ₹679 for 6ml, ₹1,165 for 12ml. Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot over Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, on soft oudh, amber and white musk. It carries some oudh and amber, so it announces itself sooner than Adaa on either clock. A good second bottle for another day, and not the first.
₹399 for 3ml, ₹699 for 6ml, ₹1,199 for 12ml. White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron and aged tobacco leaf over amber, leather and white musk. The deepest of the four and oud-led. It is a fine attar, and almost never the answer to a fresh daily one in a shared, closed room, so choose it knowingly and not for this brief.
None of this is a promise about your nose. These are three practical differences between putting an attar on before you leave and putting it on when you arrive, each one readable from how the fragrance is built, and none of them a number.
1
One
The opening happens in transit or at your desk, not both
A fresh attar spends its first stage on the lightest materials in the bottle. Adaa opens with Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli, and those are the materials that leave first. Apply before you leave and that stage happens on the road, where you cannot isolate it, compare it or decide whether you like it. Apply at the office and it happens in a room you can sit in. The materials are identical either way. Only the place changes.
Tip: Think of the first twenty minutes as a preview. The stage you are really choosing is the one that is left at hour three.
Adaa at ₹379 opens with Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli, the quickest stage to pass, and the one this whole question is about.
A cooled room and a warm street ask different things of an oil
An oil on skin opens as the skin warms it. On a street, with the skin already warm from the walk, an attar tends to open quickly and loudly. In a cooled office it tends to open more slowly and sit closer. That is why people who apply in the cool and then add a second dab to compensate overshoot. Wait for the skin to settle, then judge. An alcohol-free oil on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier opens with your skin, not in a burst.
Tip: If you cannot smell your one dab after five minutes in a cool room, wait. Do not reach for a second dab before hour three.
Ameeri at ₹385 is a richer oil, with saffron, rose, sandalwood and amber, and it opens more audibly than Adaa on warm or cool skin alike.
Where the bottle lives decides how often you can test
A roll-on is the format that makes apply-on-arrival a habit. It is small, it goes in a bag, and it goes onto skin in one movement with no cloud. That matters because a test you cannot repeat is not a test. If the bottle lives in your work bag you can compare mornings. If it lives on a shelf at home, applying before you leave becomes the only option. Choose the clock you will actually keep.
Tip: Keep the 3ml in the bag you carry to work. The best clock is the one you will repeat for three days running.
Mastani at ₹389 has the opposite floor, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka. A fine attar, and a different decision from this one.
The question is not where a fragrance smells best. It is which stage of it you want to be present for, and for a fresh attar the answer is the settled one: arrive, wait, apply once, and meet the opening somewhere you can read it.
That is why one dab on arrival beats two dabs at home. You spend a smaller dose, in a better place, at the stage you can actually judge, and you learn sooner whether the dry base is the one you meant.
The attar to carry in the bag: Adaa at ₹379: Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over three white flowers, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. The lightest of the four attars, with no oudh, in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml, as a roll-on that goes in a work bag.
The table compares the two clocks on the things that actually differ: where the opening happens, how you judge the base, what you need in order to do it, and when the other answer is the right one. One column is the recommendation, and one is the honest case against it.
The SOSA plan
Two clocks for the same one dab, and what each one costs you
What differs between them
Before leaving, or after arriving
Where the bright opening happens
Before leaving, on the commute, where you cannot isolate it. After arriving, at your desk, where you can. The bergamot, cardamom and neroli pass quickly either way, so the place matters more than the minute. View →
How you judge the base at hour three
Applied at home, hour three falls partway through the morning with the commute already behind it. Applied at the office, it falls inside the work, in the room you will actually be wearing it in.
What you need in order to do it
Before leaving: nothing, which is its real advantage. After arriving: a private minute, a bag pocket and a few minutes of settling. If your day has no such minute, apply at home and still use one dab.
When the other answer is the right one
If your office has a fragrance policy, read it before you carry any fragrance in. If the commute is the stretch you want scented, apply before you leave; I would still keep to a single dab.
If you want a warmer second bottle later: Ameeri at ₹385 adds Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, amber and a little soft oudh to the same white musk. A richer attar, and the sensible second bottle, not the first, for someone who wants a fresh daily one.
The fork after the clock is the finish. Adaa is bright, then soft, then dry. Khayaal is sparkling bergamot, neroli, black tea and amberwood, clearer and less floral. Choose the word you would use for your own skin.
The opening is the one stage you cannot judge in a moving cab, so do not spend it there. Arrive, wait, roll on one dab, and meet the fragrance where you can read it.

If you later want a second bottle
The warmer attars and the boxed set, for after the clock is settled
Two rows. Adaa is the answer for the reader who wants a soft, dry-skinned finish after the opening, and Khayaal is the answer for the one who wants it clearer. The note under them says what neither of them is, and when to apply at home instead.
The SOSA specification for a working day
Adaa if you want it soft, Khayaal if you want it clear
Both rows start small: the 3ml of Adaa at ₹379, or the 10ml of Khayaal at ₹599. Roll the 3ml on after you reach the office, judge it at hour three, and only then decide on the larger sizes: ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml, ₹1,149 for 12ml for Adaa, and ₹599 for 10ml, ₹1,899 for 50ml, ₹3,599 for 100ml for Khayaal. SOSA makes no musk-only fragrance; white musk is a base note in Adaa, Ameeri and Nawaab and never the subject. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin for the attars and nothing further; how long any fragrance lasts depends on skin, dose, clothing and the day. A patch test on first use is the only skin advice we give, and if your workplace has a fragrance policy, it outranks this page: ask before you carry any fragrance in. I cannot tell you what a colleague will make of it, and I will not try. Ours is a contact page and a person who replies: Ask for an attar recommendation and describe your commute.

A note from Sonal
When someone writes to ask whether to put an attar on before they leave or when they arrive, I used to say either works. It is true, and it is no use to the person asking, who wants the one instruction that saves a week of guessing. So I stopped saying either and started asking what they want from the first twenty minutes.
The honest answer is that the first twenty minutes are the part of a fresh attar you are least likely to enjoy on a commute and most likely to misjudge there. The bergamot and neroli are working fast and you are busy keeping your place and watching your bag. By the time you sit down, the fragrance you chose has become a different one. I would rather you met it once, deliberately, at a desk, with one dab and a few quiet minutes.
None of this is a rule. If your day has no private minute, apply at home and keep to the one dab. If your office has a policy, follow it. If the commute is the part you want scented, say so and I will tell you plainly whether Adaa suits it. I cannot promise you what anyone else will make of it, so the measure is yours, at hour three, on your own skin. A portion of every purchase supports Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Is it all right to apply an attar at my desk?
A roll-on goes on in one movement with no spray, which is what makes a desk possible. Whether your workplace welcomes fragrance is its own question: if there is a policy, read it, and if there is not, ask. This page cannot answer for your office. It can say that one dab is the dose to start on, and that SOSA Adaa at ₹379 is the attar built for it.
Will the attar last through my commute if I apply early?
SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin and nothing more. An attar applied at home is still on your skin when you arrive, but the opening has passed on the way. How long any fragrance lasts depends on skin, dose, clothing and the day, so judge your own at hour three.
Should I reapply in the afternoon?
Not during the first three days. Judge the base at hour three on one dab, then decide. If you want a second application after that, make it one dab again, in the same place, as a decision rather than a top-up.
What if the commute is the part I want scented?
Then apply at home, keep to one dab on the chest under clothing, and accept that the opening will pass on the road. The base will arrive with you. It is a legitimate choice with a different cost. Tell us the commute and we will say whether Adaa fits it. Ask for an attar recommendation.
Does it matter which spot I use?
The chest and the side of the neck, because both are easy to reach with a roll-on. The wrist is fine for a test. Whatever you choose, keep it the same for three days so the only thing that changes is the clock.
The attar to leave out of this particular search: Nawaab at ₹399 is white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron and aged tobacco leaf over amber, leather and white musk. The deepest of the four, and about as far from a quiet desk fragrance as the range goes.
