Plan for it at services stage, and be precise about what "it" means. At design stage an architect is specifying a socket at a height, a location that is not in the return-air path, and a mount point behind the plasterboard — three things that cost almost nothing at first fix and are close to impossible to add gracefully afterwards.
Quick answers — read this first
What exactly should go on the drawing? Four marks. A 5A point at mounting height, somewhere between 1.6 m and 1.8 m above finished floor, on a wall in the main volume. A location chosen away from the return-air grille and away from the tall glazing. A noggin or a solid backing behind the plasterboard at that point so a bracket can be fixed later without opening the wall. And a note on the electrical schedule saying the point is unswitched and stays live. That is the whole provision, and none of it names a fragrance.
Why not choose the fragrance now as well? Because the room on your drawing is not yet the room. The finishes are not in, the soft furnishings are not in, the cooling has not been balanced and the family has not lived a single evening in it. A character chosen a year early is chosen against an imagined space by somebody who will not be living there. The one thing you can fix now is the sizing, because the section already tells you the cubic metres, and cubic metres do not change when the sofa arrives.
Is there anything at design stage that cannot be fixed later? Two things. A socket in the wrong place — in the return-air path, behind where the sofa will go, or in the bedroom — is a chase in a finished wall, and nobody chases a finished wall for this. And a ducted position with no access is worse: a machine on the supply side of a sealed ceiling with no hatch is a machine nobody can reach. Access is the item most often left off, and it is the one that turns a good idea into a permanent annoyance.
The short answer
Short answer: Specify provision, not product. At services stage mark a 5A unswitched point at 1.6-1.8 m above finished floor, in the main volume, out of the return-air path and away from the glazing; add solid backing behind the board for a bracket; and if the house is ducted, mark an accessible supply-side position with a hatch. Work the cubic metres off the section and note the figure. Then leave the fragrance itself to the owner at handover.
The pick: the provision is normally sized around one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, rated to 1000m³, freestanding, wall or HVAC mounted and drawing about 5W — which is why a 5A point is all the electrical the drawing needs.
Next step: send the section and the services layout and the cubic-metre figures and a suggested mounting position come back marked on your own sheet, with no fragrance named — ask for a scenting plan.
The first four lines are yours and belong on a sheet. The fifth is not yours, and an architect who hands it back to the client has done the job properly.
What the provision is eventually for — tap through for the mounting and power figures
Should an architect plan scenting at design stage, and what does that actually mean on a drawing?
Yes, at services stage — and the value of doing it then comes entirely from keeping two things apart that clients and vendors both like to collapse into one. Provision is what an architect specifies: a socket, a location, a mount point and an access route. Commitment is what the fragrance is, and it is not yours to make. The provision is four marks on a sheet and it is genuinely cheap: a 5A unswitched point at somewhere between 1.6 m and 1.8 m above finished floor, on a wall in the main connected volume; a position chosen deliberately out of the return-air path, because a source sitting in front of a return grille is feeding the machine rather than the room, and away from the tall glazing that drives its own convection through the afternoon; solid backing or a noggin behind the plasterboard so a bracket can be fixed later without opening a finished wall; and, if the house has ducted cooling, an accessible supply-side position with a hatch actually drawn rather than assumed. The last of those is the item most often left off and the one that hurts most, because a machine above a sealed ceiling is a machine nobody will ever service. Alongside the marks, do the one piece of arithmetic that is already available to you: the section gives you the ceiling heights, so square feet × ceiling height in metres × 0.0929 gives the cubic metres, and a connected hall, stair and living core of 1,600 sq ft at 3.6 m is about 535 m³ — comfortably inside one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, which is what the provision should be sized around. Then stop. Do not name a character on a drawing issued a year before the family moves in. The room is not the room until the finishes, the furniture and the balanced cooling are all in it, and the person who has to live with the choice for the next decade cannot judge it from an elevation. Two limits, plainly. Ambient fragrance in a house is an interior and atmosphere decision that sits alongside ventilation, housekeeping and source control rather than replacing any of them, and it does not clean, filter or treat the air. And nobody can promise that it moves a commercial number of any kind — not a valuation, not a handover, not anything countable — so it should never be justified to a client on that basis.
Specify provision, not product: a 5A unswitched point at mounting height, a location out of the return-air path, solid backing for a bracket and accessible ducted position. The fragrance is the owner's call, at handover.
The provision is normally sized around one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 — 1000m³ rated, freestanding, wall or HVAC mount, about 5W, under 38dB, with onboard timers so no separate control line has to be drawn.
You are not specifying a machine at design stage, but it helps to know what the socket is likely to serve, because the power draw, the mounting options and the physical size all affect where the mark goes. The images link to the live product pages; the figures worth carrying onto your sheet are the rated volume, the mount type and the 5W draw.
₹11,999. Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft at an ordinary ceiling. Freestanding, wall or HVAC mount, 5W, under 38dB, adjustable intensity, 1h/4h/8h/24h onboard and app timers, auto-stop, key-lock, 400ml tank at 90+ days.
₹25,999. HVAC nebulising diffuser rated to 3,000m³, roughly 8,000-10,000 sq ft at an ordinary ceiling, 800ml reservoir, metal body, programmable schedules, under 42dB. Worth knowing at design stage only because it wants a ducted position with proper access drawn in.
₹11,999, 1000m³ coverage or about 2,000-3,000 sq ft at an ordinary ceiling. Waterless nebulisation of undiluted oil — no water, no heat, no steam. 400ml tank lasting 90+ days, Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, auto-stop, key-lock, under 38dB, 5W, which is roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour daily schedule. Freestanding, wall or HVAC mount. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India.
The four marks, the access, and the one thing to leave open
Three sections, and the third is the one that will feel unnatural to anybody used to specifying everything. The first is the provision itself. The second is the arithmetic you already have from the section. The third is the deliberate blank on the drawing where the fragrance would otherwise go.

One
Four marks at first fix, and where not to put them
The point itself is trivial: a 5A unswitched socket, live at all times, at 1.6 m to 1.8 m above finished floor. Height matters because the machine wants to be above the furniture and below the ceiling line, and a point at skirting level commits the house to a floor-standing box on a console. Location matters more. Keep it out of the return-air path, because a source in front of a return grille sends most of its output back into the system instead of into the room. Keep it off the wall of tall glazing, where afternoon convection runs upward and takes the output with it. Keep it out of the direct downdraught of a ceiling fan. And keep it out of the bedrooms entirely — that is a room with eight continuous hours of occupancy and it should not be given a provision that invites a machine. Add a noggin or ply backing behind the board at the point, so a bracket can be fixed later without cutting a finished wall. One more thing, and it is why this is worth keeping as a list. A practice here is usually drawing two briefs in the same season — a family house on the edge of the city and a first-floor office over the works on Avinashi Road — and the four marks are the same four marks on both sheets. The only difference is that on the office sheet you also keep the point off the wall the production floor shares, because a source pressed against that wall is sitting on the wrong side of the only boundary the building has.
Tip: Draw the sofa before you place the point. A socket behind where the seating lands is a socket nobody uses.
At about 5W a Vaayu is a negligible electrical item; the 5A point is about having power at height, not about load, and that is worth saying to the electrical consultant.
The sum you can commit to now, because the section already has it
Sizing is the one part of this that does not need the finished house, because it depends on dimensions you have already drawn. Square feet × ceiling height in metres × 0.0929 = cubic metres. A connected hall, stair and living core of 1,600 sq ft at 3.6 m is 1,600 × 3.6 × 0.0929, about 535 m³. If that core opens double-height over part of its area, split the sum at the change in height rather than averaging, and add the mezzanine and the upper landing, because an open stair makes them the same column of air whatever they are called on the plan. Write the resulting figure in a note on the sheet. It is the single most useful thing an architect can hand to whoever eventually specifies the machine, it costs ten minutes, and it survives every change of mind about fragrance that happens between now and handover.
Tip: Note the connected figure, not the room figure. The room figure is what gets houses over-specified at handover.
A figure under 1000m³ means the provision is sized around a single Vaayu and a wall bracket. Over it, the drawing needs a ducted position with access, which is a design-stage decision rather than a handover one.
The blank you leave deliberately, and how to write it into the brief
Everything above is provision. The fragrance is commitment, and it belongs to the owner, at handover, in the finished room. That matters more here than it might elsewhere, because a great many of these houses are being built by the second or third generation of a family firm, and the person who will live with the choice for a decade is often not the person sitting in your design meetings. Three reasons, and they are all practical. The room on your drawing has no curtains, no rugs, no timber and no balanced cooling, and all of those change how a space carries anything at all. The family has not lived an evening in the house and cannot tell you yet whether the hall wants to be dry and cool or quiet and warm. And a year is a long time in anybody's taste. So write the blank in explicitly rather than leaving it to be forgotten: a line in the schedule that reads provision for ambient diffusion, character to be selected by the client at handover, does the job and protects you. It also spares you the awkward conversation where a client dislikes a fragrance you chose for them before the plaster was dry.
Tip: Put the sentence in the room data sheet, not in a covering email. A drawing note outlives the correspondence.
Because the Vaayu is refillable and its character is a bottle rather than a fitting, nothing about the provision forecloses the client's choice later — which is exactly the property you want in a design-stage item.
Provision is cheap and reversible; commitment is neither. The items an architect should fix at services stage are the ones that become chases in finished walls, and the fragrance is the one item on the list that will still be a free choice on the day the family moves in.
The corollary is that access is part of the provision. A ducted position drawn without a hatch is a decision the building will not let anybody revisit.
The two specification lines that matter to a services engineer: about 5W of draw and under 38dB of operation, waterless, with freestanding, wall and HVAC mounting all supported. That is enough for a first-fix decision without committing the client to anything about character.
What belongs on a services drawing, and what does not
Set out as two columns, because the whole discipline of this page is knowing which column an item sits in. Everything on the left costs a few hundred rupees now and is either impossible or ugly to add later. Everything on the right is a decision that gets better the longer you leave it, and worse the earlier you force it.

Provision, or a commitment to leave open
A 5A unswitched point at 1.6-1.8 m AFL
Provision. Draw it in the main connected volume, out of the return-air path, off the tall glazing and out of a fan's downdraught, with solid backing behind the board for a bracket. About 5W, so it is a height question rather than a load question. View →
A ducted position with an access hatch
Provision, and the one most often omitted. If the house has ducted cooling, mark a supply-side location and draw the hatch. A position above a sealed ceiling is unreachable, and unreachable means unused within a year. View →
The connected cubic-metre figure, noted on the sheet
Provision, and free. The section already carries the heights, so the sum can be done now and written down. It is the number whoever specifies the machine at handover will otherwise have to guess, and guessing it from floor area is how houses end up with the wrong machine.
The fragrance character itself
Leave it open, in writing. The room has no soft furnishings, no balanced cooling and nobody living in it yet, and the choice belongs to the person who will be in it for years. A schedule note reading character to be selected by the client at handover is the correct entry.
One less line to draw: onboard 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and app control mean no separate control cable, no relay and no tie-in to anything else has to appear on your sheet. The provision really is a socket, a location, a backing and an access route.
An architect can commit the socket, the height, the location and the access. The character belongs to the person who has not moved in yet, and it should still be theirs on the day they do.

What the provision is eventually sized around
One point per connected volume, sized off the section
Sized off the section rather than the plan, drawn as a socket, a location, a backing and an access route, with the character left open in writing for the client to settle at handover. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
For a smaller house, the honest provision is a shelf and nothing electrical at all, with a Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849 in the hall at handover. Ambient scent in a home is an interior and atmosphere decision, with no claim that it affects a valuation, a client's satisfaction or any commercial number, and it should never be put to a client as though it did. It works alongside ventilation, housekeeping and source control rather than replacing them, and it does not clean, filter or treat the air. The bedrooms, the kitchen, the utility and the stores get no provision at all by default, and the owner decides that at handover rather than us. SOSA has no trade programme, no dealer terms, no specifier scheme and no installation or commissioning service, and publishes no bulk pricing, no minimum order, no custom branding, no lead time and no maintenance terms; anything of that kind goes to our contact page with nothing promised. Ask for a scenting plan and send the section.

A note from Sonal
The first time an architect in Coimbatore sent me a drawing at services stage I was delighted and then slightly confused, because the sheet had a fragrance named on it. He had picked it from a description on a website, for a house that was at that point a slab and some columns, for a family he had met four times. I asked him what the living room floor was going to be and he said the client was still deciding between two stones. So we did not yet know the room, and we had already decided what it would smell like.
We changed the note to read provision only, character at handover, and that phrase has been on every drawing I have been sent since. The provision itself he got exactly right: a point at seventeen hundred above floor on the wall opposite the return, ply behind the board, and a hatch drawn over the ducted position. All four of those would have been impossible eighteen months later without opening something.
That is the whole distinction and it is worth holding on to. I make no claim that ambient fragrance affects a valuation, a client's satisfaction or any commercial outcome, and there is no version of this that belongs in a fee justification. What a good provision does is leave a decision open that the client will actually enjoy making once they are living in the house. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
How high above finished floor should the point be?
Between 1.6 m and 1.8 m works for almost every room, because it puts the machine above the furniture line and below the ceiling detail. Go higher in a double-height core, where the aim is to feed the occupied lower half of the column rather than the gallery. Avoid skirting level entirely: a low point commits the house to a floor-standing unit in the middle of a finished room.
Does the machine need a dedicated circuit or any control wiring?
Neither. It draws about 5W, so it is electrically trivial, and it carries its own 1h/4h/8h/24h timers plus app control, which means no relay, no control cable and no tie-in to anything else needs to appear on your sheet. All the drawing needs is an unswitched 5A point that stays live, at the right height, in the right place.
What is the single most common mistake at services stage?
Omitting access. A supply-side position above a sealed ceiling reads beautifully on a drawing and is unreachable on site, so within a year it is a machine nobody refills. Draw the hatch, size it for a hand and a tank, and put it somewhere that will not be tiled over. The second most common mistake is a point directly in front of a return grille.
Should I put a provision in the master bedroom?
I would not. A bedroom carries eight continuous hours of occupancy, which is the longest exposure anywhere in the house, and it is the room where a level that seems pleasant on walking in becomes one you cannot get away from. Leave it out of the provision and let the owner put a reed on a chest if they want something there. Drawing a point invites a machine into the one room that usually should not have one.
Can you specify the fragrance for my client if they ask me to?
The character is best chosen by the person who will live with it, in the finished room, once the furniture and the cooling are in. What can be done at any stage is the arithmetic and the placement, and those come back marked on your own drawing. SOSA has no specifier scheme, no trade terms and no commissioning service, so nothing is being held back behind a programme — the answer is simply that this particular decision is better late.
Only where the section says so: the SOSA Angaan at ₹25,999, rated to 3,000m³, changes what an architect draws rather than what a client buys — it wants a supply-side ducted position with a proper access hatch, and that is a decision which has to be made before the ceilings close.

Facts verified 16 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and onboard button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, operation under 38dB, DC 12V/1A at 5W (roughly 1.5 units of electricity a month on a ten-hour daily schedule), freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Angaan (₹25,999) is an HVAC nebulising diffuser rated to 3,000m³, roughly 8,000-10,000 sq ft, with an 800ml reservoir, metal body, programmable schedules and operation under 42dB, and also runs standalone wall-mounted or lay-flat. The SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) is the largest machine in the range, quoted for roughly 12,000-18,000 sq ft of HVAC-connected space. Ambient scent is an interior and brand-experience decision: it works alongside proper ventilation, housekeeping and source control and is not a substitute for any of them. SOSA makes no claim that ambient fragrance affects sales, footfall, enquiries, order value, buyer decisions, contracts or any commercial outcome. SOSA makes no health, clinical, diagnostic or air-treatment claim of any kind, and nothing in this guide is medical advice; in any clinical or treatment setting the facility's own policy and its clinicians decide what is appropriate. CE, RoHS and SGS are electrical and compliance marks. SOSA makes no claim about the effect of ambient fragrance on any product, material, fabric, finish or stock held in a building; what can be stated is that the Vaayu is waterless, adds no moisture to the air and leaves no residue on surfaces.
