But I want to start somewhere unusual for a fragrance company, which is that a number of prenatal centres decide against ambient fragrance entirely, and that is a completely defensible choice rather than a failure of nerve. I have talked more founders out of this in prenatal than in any other kind of practice, and none of them has come back to tell me the building suffered. Nothing about a well-run prenatal clinic requires a fragrance, and if you are genuinely undecided, no fragrance is the correct default, because adding it in six months is easy and un-smelling a room is not. Here is the reasoning if you do want to proceed. The case for restraint is environmental and it is about consent, and I want to be clear that it needs no medical support of any kind. A patient in a prenatal consultation or scan room is in a room she cannot leave, for a long appointment, often undressed or with an infant, and she did not choose the fragrance. That is sufficient on its own. It is why consultation rooms, scan rooms and examination rooms stay unscented - not lower, actually unscented - and why the whole discussion collapses down to two public rooms. Most founders arrive at this asking which fragrance, having quietly settled the question of whether. Reopen it. A prenatal centre that runs no ambient fragrance at all is not an unfinished building, and the number of good ones that make exactly that choice is larger than the fragrance industry likes to admit. Judge it on your own building rather than on what a competitor does. If the waiting area is small, if patients sit in it for a long time, if there is no clean air path from the entrance that avoids the seating, or if you simply do not want the conversation at the desk, then no is the answer and it is complete. You can revisit it later with better information. Nothing is lost by waiting.
Tip: If you are undecided after ten minutes of thought, the answer is no fragrance. Undecided is a signal.

Confine it to two public rooms
The scented footprint is the entrance and the waiting bay, and nothing beyond
If you do proceed, the boundary is drawn before the machine is bought. Entrance and waiting are the only areas that qualify. Consultation rooms, scan rooms and examination rooms are unscented, always, with no lighter version and no exceptions, because a patient in one of those rooms cannot leave it, is often undressed or holding a baby, and did not choose the fragrance. A faint drift through an open door is unavoidable and acceptable; a machine inside a cabin is not. Place the unit at the entrance rather than beside the seating, so the strongest air is where people are passing through rather than where they sit for forty minutes.
Tip: Put the machine where people walk, never where they sit. That single move halves the exposure that matters.

Build the off-switch before the fragrance

This is an operational fact rather than an argument: a prenatal or maternity front desk will simply receive more requests for no fragrance than a general clinic's desk does. I am not going to explain why and you do not need me to - you need to have designed for it. Three things do the work. Anyone on the desk can switch the machine off in seconds, without permission and without hunting for a plug. At least one seating area is kept effectively unscented by design, and the desk knows which one it is so it can be offered rather than requested. And if a patient objects, you reduce or switch off without defending the decision or asking her to sit with it.

Founders of prenatal centres write to me with a question already narrowed down - which fragrance, how strong, which machine - and I usually widen it back out before answering. The honest first question is whether the building wants ambient fragrance at all. It is a strange thing for a perfumer to lead with, but this vertical earns it, and I would rather be useful than persuasive.
When I say no is a defensible answer, I mean it structurally. A prenatal waiting area holds people for a long time in a room they cannot easily step out of, and the appointment they are waiting for happens in a room where the fragrance must not follow them. A building with those two facts in it does not owe anyone a signature scent. If you proceed, keep it to the entrance, keep it below the level any shop would use, and make the off-switch as easy to reach as the light switch. If you do not proceed, the building is finished as it stands.
