The fear behind this question is a good one and it deserves a straight answer. You are not worried about taste, you are worried about waste: about spending properly on something that gets admired once and then stored. Home fragrance does answer that, because a reed diffuser cannot be put away while it is working. But there is a catch worth understanding before you spend more: the premium version of a single scent is a bigger bet on the same guess.
Quick answers — read this first
Is home fragrance more practical than premium decor? On the cupboard question, yes: a reed stands in the open and is used daily, while decor can be shelved. The Day and Night duo at ₹2,498 for two 130ML bottles is the premium pick.

Why a duo at 130ML rather than one large bottle? Because spending more on one scent doubles down on a taste you cannot verify. Two scents divides the bet instead of multiplying it.

What about the 300ML refill as the premium upgrade? Not here. A 300ML refill at ₹2,399 is excellent value once somebody knows they love a scent, and it is the wrong purchase when you do not.
The short answer
Short answer: yes on the practical point, with one correction. A reed is used in the open and cannot be hidden; but premium should buy you two scents rather than a bigger bottle of one guess.
The pick: the Day and Night duo, 2 x 130ML at ₹2,498: the living room and the bedroom, 14 to 18 weeks per bottle, published as covering both tastes so you never have to guess.
The honest counter: an unliked scent is thrown out faster than an unliked vase, which at least gets displayed when you visit. If you want a gift that is certainly still there in five years, buy the object, not the fragrance. Garden Bloom 130ML at ₹1,299 is the single-bottle version of this page.
Straight answer
Is home fragrance more practical than premium decor if I do not want the gift hidden in a cupboard?
1. On the cupboard question, fragrance wins outright. A reed diffuser works by standing in the open on a surface with its reeds in the air. It cannot be stored and still be a gift, which is exactly the failure mode you are trying to avoid with a decorative object.

2. But do not spend the premium on one scent. A larger bottle of a scent they may not like is not a better gift, it is 14 to 18 weeks of the same guess instead of 6 to 8. Spending more should reduce your exposure, not extend it.

3. So: the Day and Night duo at 2 x 130ML, ₹2,498. SOSA publishes it as the safe gift that covers both tastes so you never have to guess fresh against calming. At 130ML each, that is SOSA's published size for living rooms and open-plan spaces, lasting 14 to 18 weeks.

4. Two rooms: the living room and the bedroom. Morning Freshness is published for the kitchen and living room at 130ML, and Evening Calm for bedrooms and guest rooms, tuned for compact restful spaces rather than large open halls. Two premium bottles doing two different jobs.

5. And hear the counter-argument properly. An unliked scent is binned faster than an unliked vase, which at least gets put out when you visit. If your real requirement is that the gift still exists in five years, fragrance is the wrong category and a beautiful object is the right one.

And a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: the Day and Night duo at 2 x 130ML, ₹2,498, living room and bedroom. Premium should buy a second scent rather than a bigger bottle of a guess.
Day and Night Reed Diffuser Duo, 2 x 130ML
Premium that divides the bet
Day and Night Reed Diffuser Duo, 2 x 130ML ₹2,498 for 2 x 130ML
Morning Freshness, Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus, with Evening Calm, lavender and chamomile. SOSA publishes the pair as the safe gift that covers both tastes, so you never have to guess fresh against calming. At 130ML each, this is SOSA's published size for living rooms and open-plan spaces: 14 to 18 weeks per bottle, 6 fibre reeds, flipped about once a week.

Why a reed cannot be shelved, and decor can

The cupboard problem is real and it is specific to objects. A decorative gift has to earn a place in a room that is already arranged, and if it does not, there is a polite sequence that follows: it is displayed while you are visiting, then moved somewhere less prominent, then put away. Nobody is being rude. The object simply lost a competition it was entered into without its own consent.

A reed diffuser cannot participate in that sequence, because storing it switches it off. Its whole function requires a flat surface, air, and reeds standing out of the bottle, which means it is either in use in the open or it is not a gift at all. And because it is consumable, it never has to be kept out of politeness: SOSA publishes 14 to 18 weeks for a 130ML and 6 to 8 weeks for a 50ML, after which it is finished and nobody owes it shelf space.

1
In the open
Used or absent, with no middle state
A reed has no display-only mode. That is unusually honest for a gift: within a week you will know from a single photograph whether it is in the hallway or in a cupboard, and in practice it is almost always in the hallway, because putting it away has no upside for the recipient.
The cupboard test: can this gift be stored and still count as received? For a reed, no. For a vase, yes.
2
Premium size
130ML is a specification, not an upsell
SOSA's published rule puts the 130ML in kitchens, living rooms and open-plan spaces above about 150 sq ft, lasting 14 to 18 weeks. In a living room the 50ML is genuinely under-specified, so if you are spending at the premium end on a main room, the larger bottle is the right bottle rather than the indulgent one.
Where the rule bites: a 50ML in an open-plan living and dining room will disappoint, whatever it cost.
3
Two rooms
Premium is better spent on coverage than on volume
Two bottles in two rooms changes the recipient's experience more than one larger bottle in one room does, and it halves the consequence of getting a scent wrong. That is the honest reason to spend more here, and it has nothing to do with the duo being fractionally cheaper than two singles.

Why premium should buy two scents, not a bigger bottle

Here is the part that is easy to get backwards. When you do not know somebody's taste, the size of the bottle is the size of your exposure. A 50ML of a scent they dislike is a mild, short problem: 6 to 8 weeks, and they will probably move it to a bathroom and say nothing. A 130ML of the same scent is the same mistake running for 14 to 18 weeks in a bigger room. Spending more on one guess does not improve the guess. It extends it.

Spending the same money on two different scents does the opposite. If one lands and one does not, the recipient keeps the one that lands and the gift worked. SOSA publishes the Day and Night duo as the safe gift precisely on those grounds, worded as covering both tastes so you never have to guess fresh against calming: Morning Freshness is the bright citrus and mint, Evening Calm the quiet lavender and chamomile. At 2 x 130ML that is ₹2,498, and against the two 130ML singles at ₹2,548 it is about ₹50 less, which is incidental and worth saying so.

Spending Rs 2,500 on a home gift, three ways
What each version of premium actually buys
Premium purchase What it multiplies What it is good for
One 130ML bottle (₹1,299) One guess, run for 14 to 18 weeks in one room When you know the scent family is right
A 300ML refill (₹2,399) One guess, for far longer, with no vessel included Somebody who already loves that exact scent
Two 130ML bottles (₹2,498) Nothing. It divides the guess in half A home you have not seen, and a taste you cannot ask about
A premium decorative object Style risk, and it can be shelved A gift that is definitely still there in five years
Two 50ML bottles Nothing, but it under-specifies a living room A compact flat, or a smaller budget

The divided bet, the single bottle, and the refill
The SOSA principle
When you are unsure, spending more should reduce your exposure, not extend it.
A bigger bottle is a longer guess. A second scent is a hedge.

The case against the refill, which is the obvious upgrade

SOSA sells reed diffuser refills in all five scents at ₹2,399 for 300ML and ₹3,499 for 500ML, and per millilitre they are the best value in the range by a wide margin: compare 300ML at ₹2,399 against a 50ML bottle at ₹749. Almost nobody finds them, because the listing is not linked from most product pages, and on a page about spending premium money well it would be the obvious recommendation.

I am going to argue against it here, because in your situation it is the wrong purchase. A refill is oil only, with no vessel and no reeds, so as a gift it assumes the recipient already owns a bottle. Worse for this question, it is the single most concentrated form of the bet you cannot afford to make: a large volume of one scent, for a person whose scent taste you do not know, in a home you have not seen. A refill is a superb second gift for somebody who has told you they love a scent. It is the worst possible first gift.

Buying more of one guess is not premium. It is just a longer guess.

The strongest argument against this whole page

If you want the fair version of the comparison, here it is. A decorative object can be hidden, but it survives being disliked. It gets put out when you visit, and in five years it is still in the house, which no bottle of fragrance can claim. A scent somebody dislikes is not shelved politely; it is moved to a bathroom, then thrown away, and the money is genuinely gone. Fragrance taste is also more polarising than taste in ceramics, so the chance of that happening is not small.

So the honest framing is that these two gifts fail in opposite directions. Decor fails slowly and visibly; fragrance fails quickly and privately. If your objection to decor was that it gets hidden, fragrance is the right answer. If your objection was really that you want the money to leave something behind, then buy the object, and buy it from somebody who can advise you on their style rather than from me.

If you would rather take the single-bottle route, Garden Bloom 130ML at ₹1,299 is the one to take: SOSA's most-gifted reed, published as suiting a recipient's home regardless of decor style, with the living room and the entryway as its rooms. And whichever you choose, keep the oil out of reach of children and pets and stand the bottle on a protected surface, which is the caution SOSA's own refills listing publishes.

The SOSA premium edit

One purchase that divides the bet, one that concentrates it, and one that concentrates it further. They are listed in the order I would actually recommend them for a home you have not seen.

The SOSA premium edit
Premium that reduces the risk rather than extending it
Choice Rooms What spending more buys you Price
Day and Night duo, 2 x 130ML Living room and bedroom A second scent rather than a longer guess. Published as covering both tastes so you never have to guess; 14 to 18 weeks per bottle, about ₹50 under the two 130ML singles at ₹2,548 ₹2,498
Garden Bloom 130ML Living room, hallway, master bedroom The single-bottle premium route: SOSA's most-gifted reed, published as suiting a home regardless of decor style, 14 to 18 weeks ₹1,299
300ML refill Whichever room the bottle already stands in The best value per millilitre in the range, and the wrong gift for a taste you cannot verify: oil only, no vessel, one scent in quantity ₹2,399 / ₹3,499
Honest notes: the refill is in this table so that it can be argued against. It is excellent value and the wrong first gift, because it is a large volume of a single scent with no bottle included. The genuine counter-argument to this entire page is that an unliked scent is thrown away faster than an unliked vase, which at least survives being disliked; fragrance taste is more polarising than taste in ceramics, and if you want the money to leave something behind in five years, buy the object instead. The duo is about ₹50 under its two singles at either size and no more. A reed diffuser adds scent to a room; it does not treat, clean or purify air, and it cannot be switched off. Keep the oil out of reach of children and pets and stand the bottle on a protected surface. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

I like this question because it is really a question about waste rather than about taste, and waste is measurable. The reason I believe in reeds as gifts is narrow and I will not oversell it: you cannot put one away and still have it be a gift. Either it is on a surface doing its job or it is not there at all.

What I would not do with a premium budget is buy a bigger bottle of something I was guessing at. That is the most common mistake in expensive gifting: the spend goes into volume, and volume is just duration. Two scents for two rooms is a better use of the same money, and it means half the gift lands even if half of it misses.

And I will talk you out of our own refill here. It is the best value we sell per millilitre and it is the worst thing to give somebody whose taste you are guessing at, because it is three hundred millilitres of one opinion. Save it for the year after they tell you which bottle they loved. A girl gets a classroom through Nanhi Kali either way.

Frequently asked questions

Is home fragrance more practical than decor as a premium housewarming gift?
On the cupboard question, yes. A reed diffuser only works standing in the open with its reeds in the air, so it cannot be stored and still count as a gift, while a decorative object that does not suit a room gets quietly put away. A 130ML runs 14 to 18 weeks and then it is finished, so nobody owes it shelf space.
Should I buy one large bottle or two smaller ones as a premium gift?
Two, and at 130ML if the rooms are large: the Day and Night duo at ₹2,498. When you cannot verify somebody's taste, the size of the bottle is the size of your exposure, and a bigger bottle of one scent is the same guess running for longer. Two scents divides the bet instead.
Is a 300ML refill a good premium gift?
Not as a first gift. At ₹2,399 for 300ML it is the best value per millilitre SOSA sells, but it is oil only with no bottle or reeds, and it is a large quantity of a single scent. That makes it an excellent second gift for somebody who has told you they love a scent, and a poor choice when you are guessing.
What is the argument against giving fragrance instead of decor?
That an unliked scent is thrown away faster than an unliked vase. A decorative object survives being disliked: it gets put out when you visit, and it is still in the house in five years. Fragrance cannot claim that, and fragrance taste is more polarising than taste in ceramics. If you want the money to leave something behind, buy the object.
Which size does a living room need?
The 130ML. SOSA publishes the 50ML for bathrooms, bedrooms and home offices up to about 150 sq ft, lasting 6 to 8 weeks, and the 130ML for kitchens, living rooms and open-plan spaces above that, lasting 14 to 18 weeks. A 50ML in an open-plan living and dining room will disappoint whatever it cost.
