Scenting a new clinic is two questions wearing one coat. Deciding it is an early job, done alongside the electrical points and the ductwork. Switching it on is a late job, and the mistake almost every founder makes is doing both in opening week.
Quick answers — read this first
When should I plan ambient scenting for a clinic I am still building? At the services drawing, alongside the power points, the AC layout and the data runs. Not because scenting is complicated, but because the two things that actually matter later - a socket where the machine belongs and the option of mounting it on a wall or into a duct - are cheap now and awkward once the joinery is in. Ten minutes with the services consultant covers it. The fragrance itself and the intensity are decided much later, and the switch-on is later still.
So when do I actually turn it on? Not on opening day. A newly finished clinic smells of adhesive, paint, polish, sealant, new carpet and new upholstery for weeks, and adding fragrance to that gives you two smells rather than one. Fragrance is never used to cover another smell, and a fit-out is exactly the kind of smell it must not be asked to cover. Air the building properly, run the AC hard, keep the fresh-air side working, and walk in from the street each morning until the room smells of nothing in particular. Then switch on, at a low setting.
What does the whole thing cost and when do I pay for it? One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a clinic past roughly 1,500 sq ft, or one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 if the patient-facing side is a single reception under about 750 sq ft. Buy it before handover so the electrician can leave you the right point, and accept that it will sit in its box for a month. The 400ml tank runs 90+ days a fill, so nothing is wasted by waiting.
The short answer
Short answer: at three separate moments. Plan it at the services drawing so you get a socket and a mounting option; buy the machine before handover; and switch it on only once the fit-out smell of adhesive, paint and new textiles has cleared, which is usually weeks after opening rather than on opening day. One Vaayu (₹11,999) past 1,500 sq ft, or a Sukoon (₹1,899) below about 750 sq ft.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) specified at services stage for a wall or HVAC mount on the reception air path, or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) on the desk if the clinic is a single small reception.
Next step: send the services drawing and the fit-out programme, and we will mark where the point should go and give you an honest date to switch it on - Ask for a clinic scenting plan.
When in the build should a founder plan ambient scenting for a new hair transplant clinic?
Three separate moments, and treating them as one is where this goes wrong. The first is the services drawing. Before the electrical layout is frozen, you need a socket where the machine will actually live - on the reception air path, usually high on a wall or near the supply side of the AC rather than tucked behind the desk - and you need to decide whether the unit will be freestanding, wall-mounted or mounted into ductwork. A SOSA Vaayu can do any of the three, and asking for that after the false ceiling has closed costs far more than asking for it now. Ten minutes with your services consultant is the entire task. The second moment is before handover: buy the machine, choose the register, and write down which zones it serves. The register for a hair clinic is clean, dry and cool - white tea, a dry light citrus, or soft woods - and the zoning is short: entrance, reception, waiting and corridors, with procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms left completely unscented. Do that on paper while the clinic is empty and nobody is arguing about it. The third moment is the switch-on, and it is not opening week. A newly finished clinic smells powerfully of itself for weeks: adhesive, paint, PU polish, sealant, new MDF, new carpet, new upholstery. Adding a fragrance on top of that does not solve it, and I would rather say why plainly - fragrance is never used to cover another smell, and if you switch on during the fit-out haze, what a patient meets at the door is your scent plus solvent, and your scent is what gets blamed for it. The answer is time and air, not product. Run the AC properly, keep the fresh-air side working, let the building breathe, and walk in from the street each morning before anyone else arrives. When the room smells of nothing in particular, switch on at a low setting and leave it there. That is usually several weeks after opening, sometimes longer for a heavy fit-out with a lot of new fabric. The honest concession is that for your first month you should spend nothing on this at all - the money goes on ventilation and cleaning, which are your responsibility and which nothing here replaces. And if the patient-facing area is under about 750 sq ft, the machine is a SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 rather than ₹11,999. Ask for a clinic scenting plan and send the services drawing while it is still a drawing.
Plan it at the services drawing, buy it before handover, switch it on weeks after opening. A new clinic smells of its own fit-out for weeks and fragrance is never used to cover that. Reception and waiting only; clinical rooms never.
Specify it early, switch it on late. One SOSA Vaayu - waterless, under 38dB, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, with app timers and a key-lock. ₹11,999. Under about 750 sq ft of patient-facing space, buy the Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead.
A new clinic is the one situation where you buy the machine before you need it, so it is worth getting the size right rather than ordering upward. The images link to the product pages so you can check the mounting and power details against your drawing.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 165 × 80.5 × 215mm, 0.9kg, DC 12V/1A at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable. That last line is the one your services consultant needs, because it decides where the point goes before the ceiling closes.
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml hotel-inspired fragrances. If the patient-facing side is a single reception, this is the honest buy and it needs nothing from the services drawing except a socket that is not behind the sofa.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified - electrical and compliance marks, not medical approvals. Made in India.
Each of these happens at a different point in the programme, with different people in the room, and none of them can be moved to sit beside the others.

Get it onto the services drawing
A socket and a mounting decision, months before anything is bought
The only genuinely time-sensitive part of clinic scenting is a power point in the right place and the option to mount high or into a duct. A Vaayu is 165 × 80.5 × 215mm and runs on 5W, so it asks almost nothing of the electrical design, but it wants to sit on the air path rather than behind reception joinery. Decide with your services consultant whether it will be freestanding, wall-mounted or mounted into the supply side of the AC, and have the point drawn accordingly. This costs nothing at drawing stage and turns into chasing walls later. Everything else about scenting can be decided after the clinic is finished; this cannot.
Tip: If your AC is a ducted system, ask the consultant now whether an HVAC mount is practical. It usually is, and it changes where the point goes.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
Choose materials with your nose as well as your eyes
Soft furnishings hold a smell for months and nobody costs that in
Between the services stage and handover there is a window where material choices are still open, and it is worth spending one conversation on it. Heavy upholstery, thick curtains, carpet and deep-pile rugs are reservoirs: they take up whatever is in the air and give it back slowly, which is why a new clinic full of new fabric holds its fit-out smell far longer than a hard-finished one. It also means that once you do scent the room, fabric will keep giving that fragrance back long after the machine has switched off for the night. None of this means avoid fabric. It means expect a longer airing period, and choose the profile once rather than experimenting across three of them.
Tip: Wash or air new curtains and loose covers before the clinic opens rather than after patients start noticing them.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
The fit-out smell has to go on its own, not be covered
This is the single most common mistake I see in a new clinic, and it is understandable: you have spent months on the interior, opening day arrives, and you want everything running. But the building still smells of adhesive, paint, polish and new textiles, and running a fragrance into that gives a patient two smells at the door instead of one. Fragrance is never a way to cover another smell, and the fit-out haze is the clearest example of a smell that has to leave rather than be joined. Air the place, run the AC properly, keep the fresh-air side open, and test by walking in from the street first thing each morning. When the room reads as neutral, switch on low. Ventilation and cleaning remain your responsibility throughout, and nothing here substitutes for either.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
Scenting a new clinic is planned at the services drawing and switched on weeks after opening - and the gap between those two dates is the part nobody puts in the programme.
A new clinic already has a strong fragrance of its own. It is called the fit-out, and the only honest thing to do about it is wait for it to leave.
Named on the drawing, boxed until later: SOSA Vaayu, waterless, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, 5W, so the electrical point can be drawn early. ₹11,999.
Every new clinic already has a signature scent on opening day. It is adhesive, paint and new fabric, and the only cure for it is a few weeks of moving air.

Why the switch-on is the hard part
The features that matter are the ones that hold a level once you set it
Two machines cover almost every new hair clinic, and the choice is made from the floor plan rather than the ambition of the brand. Both are dry enough to sit on the public side of a building that does surgical work. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA hair-clinic specification
Bought before handover, switched on weeks after opening
Plan the point early, buy before handover, and hold the switch-on until the building smells of nothing in particular. Fragrance here is an interior decision with no clinical or therapeutic claim of any kind; it works alongside ventilation and cleaning, never instead of them, and is never used to cover a fit-out smell or any other smell; and procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are unscented from day one, with the treating clinician's judgement overriding any plan in their own rooms. Installation, warranty, maintenance and any bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed with SOSA before you order. Ask for a clinic scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
The question usually arrives about six weeks before an opening, phrased as an urgent one, and my honest answer disappoints people: the part you needed to do early is already behind you, and the part you are asking about should not happen for another month. Founders hear that as a delay. It is actually the cheapest advice in this whole cluster, because the thing standing between a new clinic and a clean-smelling reception is not a machine. It is a few weeks of moving air, and it costs nothing.
What I would want on the drawing is trivial: one socket on the reception air path, and a decision about whether the unit sits on a shelf, on the wall or in the duct. That is it. Everything else - the profile, the intensity, the run hours - is settled after the clinic exists, because you cannot judge any of them from a plan. And material choice matters more than people expect, not for how it looks but for how long it holds what is in the air. A reception full of new upholstery and heavy curtains keeps its fit-out smell far longer than a hard-finished one, and it will hold your fragrance longer too.
On hardware: past about 1,500 sq ft, one Vaayu at ₹11,999, on a low setting and a timer, switched on when the room is ready rather than when the clinic is. Under 750 sq ft, a Sukoon at ₹1,899. The procedure, recovery and photography rooms get nothing at all, from opening day onwards. And nobody can promise you that any of this changes a number in your practice; it makes the arrival coherent, which is a smaller and truer claim. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
I am opening a premium hair transplant clinic - when should I plan ambient scenting?
At three separate moments. Plan it at the services drawing so you get a socket on the reception air path and the option of a wall or HVAC mount. Buy the machine before handover and write down the zones on paper while the clinic is empty. Switch it on only once the fit-out smell of adhesive, paint, polish and new textiles has left the building, which is usually several weeks after you open rather than on opening day.
Why should I not switch it on in opening week?
Because a newly finished clinic smells strongly of itself, and adding a fragrance to that gives a patient two smells at the door rather than one. Fragrance is never used to cover another smell, and a fit-out is the clearest case of a smell that has to leave on its own. The remedy is air and time: run the AC properly, keep the fresh-air side working, and walk in from the street each morning until the room reads as neutral.
How long does a new clinic take to stop smelling of the fit-out?
It varies with the finishes and the ventilation, so I would rather give you a test than a number. Walk in from outside first thing in the morning, before staff arrive and before anything is cleaned. A hard-finished clinic with good air movement usually reads neutral in a few weeks. A reception full of new carpet, upholstery and heavy curtains takes noticeably longer, because fabric holds and slowly returns whatever is in the air.
What does the services consultant actually need from me?
Two things. A socket where the machine will live, which means on the reception air path rather than behind joinery, and a decision on whether the unit will be freestanding, wall-mounted or mounted into the supply side of the AC. A SOSA Vaayu is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and draws 5W, so it asks very little of the electrical design. Installation services are not published by SOSA and should be confirmed rather than assumed.
Should the new clinic's procedure rooms be scented at a low level from the start?
No. Procedure and graft rooms, post-procedure and recovery areas, and photography or documentation rooms stay completely unscented rather than lightly scented, from opening day and permanently. Post-operative scalp is an open wound and those rooms are treated as clinical space throughout. A faint drift from reception through an open door is unavoidable and acceptable; a machine, a reed set or a plug-in inside those rooms is not.
Reception scented, clinical rooms never: One machine on the reception air path, with procedure, recovery and photography rooms left alone entirely. ₹11,999.

The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers up to 1000m³, draws 5W, and mounts freestanding, on a wall or into ductwork, so it can be named on a services drawing months before it is switched on; below about 750 sq ft the honest answer is a Sukoon at ₹1,899. About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.
Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
