Founder Diaries · When More Reeds Don't Help
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles5 min readUpdated August 2026

Adding reeds felt like the obvious fix, and it's a fair instinct. But here's the honest truth I'd tell a friend: a reed diffuser is a quiet, close-range scent by design — more sticks nudge the strength a little near the bottle, they don't hand you room-filling reach. If nothing changed, either you've hit that ceiling, or your nose has simply grown used to the smell.

Quick answer

Why didn't more reeds help? You've likely hit the diminishing-returns ceiling of passive diffusion, or you've gone nose-blind. Neither is fixed by more sticks.

Do more reeds add reach? Only a little, and only close to the bottle. Reeds have no fan or mist to carry scent across a room.

What actually gives projection? Active diffusion — a Sukoon or SOSA Safar pushes scent into the air.

The short version
Short answer: More reeds raise close-range strength, not room reach — you've hit the passive ceiling or gone nose-blind. Your reed isn't faulty.
The pick: Want subtle background scent? Stay with your reed, use five sticks. Want real projection? SOSA Safar (₹3,999) for a small room.

Let me start by taking the worry off the table: your reed almost certainly isn't defective. When you push more reeds into the neck of the bottle, you do get a genuine increase — but it's smaller than you expect, and it happens right beside the bottle, not across the room. Reeds work by wicking oil up and letting it evaporate into still air. There's no fan, no heat, no mist. So the scent doesn't travel; it pools gently around its source and drifts only as far as the room's own air currents will carry it. That is passive diffusion working exactly as it should.

There's a second, quieter culprit: your own nose. If you've been in the room all afternoon, your brain filters out a steady, unchanging smell — it's called olfactory habituation, and it's the reason a scent that seemed strong on Monday feels like nothing by Thursday. It isn't the reeds fading. It's you adapting. That's why your guests often notice a fragrance you honestly can't smell at all.

The honest breakdown
Why the extra reeds didn't rescue it

1. You've hit the ceiling. Past roughly eight reeds, a small room saturates. Extra sticks add barely-perceptible strength and burn the oil faster.

2. Reeds don't project. No fan, no mist — scent drifts from the bottle rather than filling the room. More reeds don't change that mechanism.

3. Your nose has adapted. A steady smell you live with disappears from awareness. A walk outside resets it in minutes.

4. Airflow is stealing it. Open windows, fans and cross-breeze scatter a low-energy passive scent faster than reeds can replace it.

The honest caveat: if a reed's charm — silent, ambient, no plug — still appeals but you want more presence, the answer isn't more sticks. It's a different diffusion method. More reeds only ever solve for oil consumption, not reach.
The one test worth doing first

Before you spend a rupee more, run the walk-out test. Step outside or into another room for ten to fifteen minutes, then walk back in with a fresh nose. If the fragrance greets you clearly, your reeds are fine — you'd simply gone nose-blind, and no upgrade is needed. If it's still faint on a fresh nose, and the reeds are wet and the bottle isn't empty, then you've reached the genuine limit of what a passive reed can do in your room. That's not a defect. It's the honest signal that your goal — noticeable, room-filling scent — has outgrown the tool.

SOSA Safar waterless cordless nebulising diffuser for stronger room projection
When you want real projection
SOSA Safar ₹3,999
A cordless, waterless nebuliser that atomises neat fragrance into a fine dry mist — stronger and more perfume-like than any reed. Catalogued for car and travel, but because it's cordless and high-throw it doubles beautifully as an on-demand scenter for a small bedroom or desk. This is what actually fills a small space.
The honest ladder
What to do next, matched to what you actually want
What you want Do this From
Subtle background scent, close range Keep the reed — five sticks is the sweet spot ₹749
Fixed a nose-blind moment Nothing — the walk-out test proved it works —
Genuine walk-in scent, small room SOSA Safar — waterless, on demand ₹3,999
Affordable active step-up Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist ₹1,899
More reeds change how fast the oil finishes, never how far the scent travels. Reach is a job for active diffusion.
The honest core
A reed has a ceiling — and no number of sticks turns a passive scent into a projector.
More reeds buy you a little strength beside the bottle and a faster-emptying bottle. If you want the room to greet you, that's an active-diffusion decision, and it's an honest one to make.
Frequently asked
I added more reeds but my diffuser still feels weak — why?
Two things are usually happening. First, reeds have a diminishing-returns ceiling: past roughly eight reeds a small room saturates and extra sticks give you very little more strength, only faster oil use. Second, you may have gone nose-blind to a scent you live with all day. Adding reeds cannot fix either, because a reed is a close-range, passive scent by design — it was never built for room-filling projection.
Does adding reeds make a reed diffuser project further across the room?
Only a little, and only near the bottle. More reeds raise the concentration of scent close to the diffuser, so it feels a bit stronger when you stand beside it. They do not push fragrance further across the room, because a reed has no fan or mist to carry scent — it relies on still air and slow evaporation. Reach across a room is set by the diffusion method, not the reed count.
How can I tell if it is the reeds or my nose?
Step outside for ten to fifteen minutes and walk back in. If the scent hits you clearly on re-entry, your reeds are fine and you had simply adapted to it — that is normal olfactory habituation, not a fault. If it is faint even on a fresh nose, and the reeds are wet and the bottle is not empty, then you have reached the honest limit of what passive diffusion can do in that room.
What should I do if I genuinely want stronger, room-filling scent?
Move from a passive reed to active diffusion. A SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic pushes scent out on a cool mist for an affordable, walk-in bedroom or living-room effect. The SOSA Safar is a cordless waterless nebuliser that atomises neat fragrance into a fine dry mist for stronger, more perfume-like projection in a small room or on demand. Both actively carry scent into the air, which no number of reeds can do.
Reed isn't broken — the goal just changed
