How to use ultrasonic diffuser fragrance
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles7 min readUpdated June 2026
Using an ultrasonic diffuser is genuinely simple, but a few small habits make the difference between a clean, well-scented room and a clogged machine. Here is exactly how to use ultrasonic diffuser fragrance - the steps, the dose, and the care that keeps your diffuser working for years.
Quick answers - read this first
How do I use ultrasonic diffuser fragrance? Fill the tank with clean water to the line, add a few drops of water-based diffuser fragrance, replace the lid and switch on. The diffuser mists the scented water as a cool cloud.
How many drops? Start with five or six drops per full tank and adjust to taste. Water-based fragrance is concentrated, so add slowly.
What not to do? Do not use thick reed oils or neat essential oils - they can clog the misting plate. Use water-based diffuser fragrance only.
The short answer
It is simple: water, a few drops, on. Fill to the line, add fragrance, switch on - the diffuser does the rest.
Start with 5-6 drops. Concentrated, so add slowly and adjust to taste.
Water-based only. This is not reed diffuser oil. Thick oils clog the plate - use water-based fragrance.
It is simple. Fill the tank with clean water to the marked line, add a few drops of water-based diffuser fragrance (start with five or six), replace the lid and switch on. The ultrasonic plate vibrates and mists the scented water as a cool cloud that gently scents the room. Use a water-based fragrance made for diffusers - not reed oil or neat essential oils, which can clog the misting plate. Place the diffuser on a flat surface a little away from where you sit, run it on a low output, and top up the water and fragrance as it runs low. The SOSA Hotel Collection is water-based and made for exactly this, from ₹299.
In one line: fill the tank with water to the line, add five or six drops of water-based diffuser fragrance, switch on. Use water-based fragrance only; thick oils clog the plate.
Ready to scent? The SOSA Hotel Collection - water-based, a few drops per tank. From ₹299.
An ultrasonic diffuser does the work for you - it just needs water and a water-friendly fragrance. The whole process takes under a minute, and once you know the rhythm you will barely think about it.
Here is the routine, start to finish.
How to use it, plainly
To use ultrasonic diffuser fragrance: fill the tank to the line with clean water, add a few drops of water-based fragrance, switch on, and top up as needed. This is not reed diffuser oil - use water-based fragrance made for ultrasonic and humidifier-style diffusers.
If you ever switch scents, empty and rinse the tank first so the new fragrance comes through clean.
Let me clear up two things
✕
"More drops means a better scent." Past a few drops it just gets overwhelming in a closed room. Start low and build.
✕
"Any oil works if it smells nice." Thick reed and carrier oils clog the plate. Only water-based fragrance is right for the tank.
Dose, placement and care
Three habits that keep it scenting cleanly.
1
Dose
Five or six drops, adjust
Start with five or six drops per full tank and add a couple more for larger or open rooms. Concentrated, so build up slowly - you can always add.
2
Placement
Flat surface, a little away
Put it on a flat, stable surface, not on fabric or right beside where you sit, so the mist disperses evenly across the room.
3
Care
Empty and wipe regularly
Empty leftover water when not in use, and wipe the tank and misting plate every few uses so the mist stays clean and strong.
The honest steer
The whole skill is a few drops, the right fragrance, and a clean tank.
Get those right and your diffuser scents a room cleanly for years.

What to do
Note
Fill
Clean water to the line
Not over the max line
Add
5-6 drops fragrance
Water-based only
Run
Switch on, low output
Place a little away
Care
Empty & wipe regularly
Keeps mist clean
So water, a few drops of water-based fragrance, and a clean tank - that is all it takes. A diffuser scents the room for ambience; it does not purify the air.
The SOSA range
The SOSA Hotel Collection is a water-based ultrasonic diffuser fragrance in seven hotel-inspired scents, made to mist cleanly. Prices below are the 15ml; it also comes in 100ml and 300ml.
I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, and the one thing every great hotel taught me is that scent is the first thing you notice and the last thing you forget. I wanted to bottle that feeling for the home.
So the Hotel Collection is seven water-based diffuser fragrances, each my own interpretation of the style a famous hotel is known for - composed in our own lab, made to run cleanly through a SOSA ultrasonic diffuser. Please use the SOSA diffuser fragrance only; raw essential or carrier oils are thick and can clog the misting plate.
To be clear: these are inspired interpretations, not the hotels' actual proprietary scents. SOSA is not affiliated with or endorsed by the hotels named - the names just describe the scent style. I would rather you knew exactly what you are buying: a perfumer's take on that hushed, expensive calm, at a fair price.
Frequently asked questions
How many drops of fragrance should I use?
Start with five or six per full tank and adjust. Water-based fragrance is concentrated, so add slowly. The SOSA Hotel Collection is water-based.
Do I add fragrance to water or use it neat?
Add a few drops to the water in the tank - it is made to mix with water and mist, not to be used neat.
How often should I refill?
Top up the water and add fresh drops whenever it runs low; empty leftover water when not in use.
Can I leave it running all day?
Many diffusers have a timer or auto-off when the water runs out. Run it gently and refill as needed.
Is the fragrance safe?
Yes - IFRA-standard and phthalate-free. Sensitivity is individual; this is general information, not medical advice.
