The refill, step by step
The SOSA hanging diffuser is a 12ml refillable glass bottle with a reed and a stopper - it is designed to be topped up, not thrown away. Once you have done it once it takes under a minute. Work over a sink or a paper towel the first time, just in case.

Open it
Remove the stopper and lift out the reeds
Unscrew or pull the stopper and set the reeds aside on a tissue - they will have oil on them, so do not rest them on fabric. If there is any oil left in the bottle, that is fine; you are topping up, not starting from empty.

Pour fresh oil to about three-quarters full
Pour slowly into the glass and stop at roughly three-quarters - never to the brim. The headroom is what stops the oil from sloshing up and out over the reed when the car moves. A funnel or a steady hand keeps it clean.

Freshen the reeds
Flip them, or fit fresh ones
Reeds clog with old oil over time and slow the throw. The quickest fix is to flip the existing reeds so a clean, unsaturated end sits in the fresh oil. If they are heavily clogged or the scent stays weak after a flip, fit fresh reeds instead. Either way, fresh reeds in fresh oil restores the full throw.

Clean the neck, close the stopper, hang it up
Wipe any oil from the neck and the outside of the glass with a tissue so the stopper seats cleanly and nothing drips when you hang it. Re-seat the stopper - snug to start mild, looser for more throw - and return it to its shaded mirror or headrest spot.
Avoiding spills and overfill
Almost every refill mess comes from one of two habits: filling to the top, or rushing the reeds back in. Both are easy to avoid.
The overfill trap
A full bottle is not a stronger bottle - it is a spill waiting for a speed bump.
Filled to the brim, oil rides up the reed and over the neck every time the car lurches, leaving it on your upholstery and dripping down the glass. Three-quarters full throws just as well and stays where it belongs. The headroom is the whole point.
