Why does my villa smell damp in the rains when my old flat never did?
Because a villa has far more building exposed to the weather, and far more of the house standing still. Start with the terrace: it is the single most common source of villa damp in India. Waterproofing ages, ponding water finds a crack, and the first sign is a faint musty smell in the bedroom below, often weeks before a stain appears on the ceiling. Walk the terrace after heavy rain and look for standing water that has not drained within an hour, check every rainwater outlet and balcony drain for leaves and silt, and look at the parapet joints. Then the walls. A flat usually has one or two exposed faces; a villa has four, and the one facing the prevailing rain will seep while the others stay dry, which is why the smell is often in exactly one bedroom. Feel each outside wall with the flat of your hand, particularly behind wardrobes and headboards, and look for chalky or blistered paint. Then ground contact: rising damp shows as a tide line above the skirting on ground-floor walls, and any basement, store or stilt parking with poor ventilation will push its smell up the stairwell. A flat in the middle of a tower is surrounded by other conditioned flats. A villa is surrounded by weather. The terrace is the most common source of villa damp in India: aged waterproofing, a ponding area that never drains, a silted outlet, a cracked parapet joint, and the first symptom is a musty bedroom below rather than a visible stain. Walk it after heavy rain and look for water still standing an hour later. Rooms nobody opens
Guest wings, upper floors and stores with still air
Villas have spare capacity, and spare capacity gets shut. A guest bedroom used twice a year, a top floor kept for visiting family, a store under the stairs, a puja room with the door closed: still air against a cool outside wall, a wardrobe packed tight, a mattress that has not moved since last summer. Those rooms go first every monsoon and then they contribute their smell to the stairwell, which distributes it around the house. Treat them as part of the house rather than as storage. Open the doors and run the ceiling fans in them daily even when empty, leave wardrobe doors ajar, stand the mattresses up once a week, thin out the clothes and the linen so air can move between them, and get anything leather or paper out of a dark, closed corner. It costs nothing except the habit.

Size the fragrance by volume, not by bedrooms

Once the house is dry, work out what it takes to hold a single fragrance across it. Multiply length by width by height for each connected volume and divide by 1000m³, which is what one Vaayu covers, roughly 2,000-3,000 sq ft. A typical two-storey villa comes out at one machine per floor, placed on the stairwell air path where air genuinely moves between levels, with the same fragrance in both so the house reads as one house rather than as several rooms. If your number goes above three machines, or the villa is built around a double-height living volume, or it runs to 8,000-10,000 sq ft on central air conditioning, stop stacking small units and put one Angaan on the HVAC instead. It is almost always the building rather than the housekeeping. So my first questions are about the terrace and the shut rooms, not about fragrance. Does water stand anywhere on the terrace an hour after heavy rain. Which bedroom is under it. When did anyone last open the guest wing. Then stop shopping and look for a leak. A musty smell that survives proper drying, washing and cleaning means water is still arriving from somewhere: seepage through an outside wall, failed terrace or balcony waterproofing, a pipe leaking inside a wall, a blocked rainwater outlet, or rising damp at floor level. Look for cool patches, blistered or chalky paint, dark tide lines, lifting skirting and swollen wood, and get the source repaired. That is a building problem and no fragrance product fixes it.
