Fragrance selection goes wrong in projects for one reason: it is done the way perfume is sold rather than the way a finish is chosen. Nobody picks a stone from a photograph at arm's length, but almost everybody picks a house fragrance from a blotter in a showroom. Here is the process I would use instead, including the trial, the sign-off and the sheet that goes in the handover pack.
Quick answers — read this first
How do you choose a signature fragrance for a house during a project? Brief it against the dominant materials rather than a season, shortlist exactly two profiles, then trial each one on site for a week, visiting at the same hour of day so you are comparing like with like. Sign off in writing - the fragrance, the intensity, the timer windows - and hand it over as a documented sheet. Run the trial on the machine the client will keep: a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity.
Why should a fragrance not be chosen from a blotter? Because a blotter tells you what an oil smells like on paper at arm's length, not what it does in a specific building. The same profile behaves differently in an air-conditioned flat with polished stone than in a timber-heavy villa, changes with humidity, and has to sit alongside whatever the household cooks. A one week on-site trial answers all of that. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) holds 400ml of pure fragrance oil and runs up to 75 days a fill, so a trial costs almost nothing in oil.
What should be signed off with the client about home fragrance? Four things in writing: the fragrance name, the intensity setting, the timer windows, and the machine's position on the plan. Add the reorder link and the refill interval - up to about 75 days on a 400ml tank depending on intensity and hours. Sign-off matters because an undocumented choice is lost within weeks of handover, which is how good scent layers die. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) has key-lock so the agreed setting holds.
The short answer
Short answer: brief the fragrance against the materials, shortlist two profiles, trial each for a week on site at the same hour of day, sign off the scent, intensity and schedule in writing, and hand over a documented sheet. Run the trial on the machine the client keeps - a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft.
The pick: two profiles, one week each, on the client's own SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), judged in the house after the deep clean rather than on a blotter in a showroom.
Next step: tell us the materials, the layout and the household, and we will shortlist two profiles for a trial - ask us about a project specification.
The trial is the part practices skip and the part that removes every later argument. A week each, in the actual house, at the actual temperature, after the deep clean - and a decision that is written down rather than remembered.
What is the right process for choosing a home's signature fragrance in a design project?
Five steps, and the third is the one that matters. One, brief it against the materials. Not against a season, a trend or the client's perfume. Warm schemes with timber, leather, stone and neutral textiles carry dry woody, tea and soft amber profiles; cooler, harder, minimal schemes of glass, lacquer and pale stone take clean citrus, white floral and light musk. Note the practical constraints too - an air-conditioned Indian flat flattens sweetness and amplifies anything heavy, and every profile has to coexist with whatever that household actually cooks. Sweet gourmands lose that fight by the second week. Two, shortlist exactly two. Presenting eight options is how a client ends up choosing the loudest one on a blotter, which is almost never the one that survives a month in a house. Two is a decision. Eight is a fragrance counter. Three, trial on site, one week each. This is the step practices skip and the step that removes every later argument. Run profile A for a week and profile B for a week, in the actual house, after the deep clean, at the actual air-conditioning setting, and visit at the same hour each time - a fragrance judged at eleven in the morning with the windows open is a different fragrance at nine at night with the AC running. Ask the client to walk in from outside and report the first ten seconds, because everybody adapts to a space within minutes and residents are the worst judges of their own homes. Four, sign it off in writing. The fragrance name, the intensity setting, the timer windows and the machine position on the plan. An undocumented decision is a decision that lasts until the first tank runs out. Five, hand over the sheet with the reorder link and the refill interval. The machine to run all of this on is the one the client keeps: a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), waterless, rated to 1000m³ or about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, under 38dB, and a 400ml tank of pure fragrance oil lasting up to 75 days, so a two week trial uses very little. One more note worth raising with the client at briefing rather than at handover: if anyone in the household is sensitive to fragrance, run lower, ventilate well, and be willing to conclude that a scented house is not right for them - we make no health claim either way. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. We will shortlist and run the trial with you on a free project specification, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Brief against the materials, shortlist two, trial each for a week on site at the same hour, sign off the scent and the setting in writing, and hand over the sheet with the refill interval.
Run the trial on the machine the client keeps. The SOSA Vaayu is waterless, rated to 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), under 38dB, with adjustable intensity and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and a 400ml pure-oil tank lasting up to 75 days - so two weeks of trialling costs almost nothing in oil.
The trial and the handover both run on the same unit, so there is nothing to swap out at the end of the project. Here it is in full: one machine, three photographs, each linking to the live product page.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. Adjustable intensity and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers for running a comparison, under 38dB, auto-stop and key-lock to hold the agreed setting.
The tank takes pure fragrance oil rather than a water-based blend, so the trial is judged on the fragrance itself with no mist, no dampness and no residue in a house you have just finished.
One 400ml fill runs up to about 75 days depending on intensity and hours, which is roughly five fills a year. Put that interval and the reorder link on the scent sheet in the handover pack.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), a 400ml pure-oil tank lasting up to 75 days, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers with adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, 165 x 80.5 x 215mm, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India.
Three rules turn fragrance selection from a matter of taste into a repeatable part of your process.
1
Judge it in the building
A blotter tells you about an oil, not about a house
Nobody would approve a stone from a photograph held at arm's length, yet that is exactly what choosing a house fragrance from a blotter in a showroom amounts to. The same profile behaves differently depending on what the room is made of, how much air conditioning it runs, how humid the city is and what the household cooks. Dry woody profiles that read as thin on paper often bloom properly in a timber-heavy villa; sweet profiles that charm on a blotter turn cloying in an air-conditioned flat by the second week. So judge it where it will live, after the deep clean, at the client's normal AC setting, and judge it from the doorway rather than from beside the machine. The first ten seconds on entry is the only evaluation that matters, because it is the only one a guest will ever perform.
Tip: the doorway is the test position. Never judge from beside the machine.
Adjustable intensity means the trial can be run at the level the client will actually live with rather than at full output.
Present too many and the client will pick whichever is loudest on the blotter, which is reliably the one that becomes tiring in a house. Narrow it to two on materials and household before the client is ever involved - that is your professional judgement and they are paying for it. Then run each for a full week rather than an afternoon, because the whole question with a signature scent is how it behaves on day six, not on minute one. Visit at the same hour on the same day of the week for both, keep the intensity identical, and change nothing else. Ask three questions at the door: what do you notice first, does it feel like this house, and would you want this every day for two years. The last question is the one that eliminates a surprising number of otherwise lovely oils.
One 400ml tank runs up to 75 days, so a two-week comparison uses a fraction of a fill.
The sign-off and the sheet are what make it survive handover
Six weeks after the family moves in, the tank runs dry. If nobody wrote down what the fragrance was called, where to buy it, what the intensity was set to and why, the layer simply ends - and it ends without anyone deciding to end it. So the sign-off should be a short written record: fragrance name, intensity, timer windows, machine position marked on the plan. The handover sheet adds the reorder link, the refill interval - up to about 75 days on a 400ml tank, roughly five fills a year - and one honest paragraph saying that scent sits on top of airing and cleaning rather than replacing them, that it will not cover damp, cooking or a wardrobe that needs emptying, and that it is not an air purifier. Then key-lock the machine so the agreed level survives everybody who walks past it.
Tip: a fragrance nobody wrote down lasts exactly one tank.
Key-lock, auto-stop and app scheduling, so the signed-off setting is the setting six months later.
Here is the whole selection process as a table, with what you are actually deciding at each step.
The SOSA plan
The selection process, step by step
Step
What you are deciding, and how
Brief against the materials
Dry woods, tea and soft amber for timber, leather, stone and neutral textiles. Clean citrus, white floral and light musk for glass, lacquer and pale stone. Avoid heavy sweet profiles in cooking-heavy, air-conditioned homes.
Shortlist two
Your professional judgement, made before the client is involved. Eight options guarantees the loudest blotter wins, and the loudest blotter is rarely the one that survives a month in a house.
Trial a week each
Same hour, same AC setting, same intensity, after the deep clean. Judge from the doorway on entry, and ask whether they would want it every day for two years.
Sign off and hand over

One machine for the trial and for the handover, so nothing is swapped at the end of the project. Waterless, so there is no damp and nothing settling on wood, art, books or upholstery in a house you have just finished. Pure fragrance oil in a 400ml tank, CE, RoHS and SGS certified, made in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Two things to raise at briefing rather than at handover. If anyone in the household is sensitive to fragrance, run lower, ventilate well, and be prepared to conclude that a scented home is not right for that family - we make no health claim in either direction. And sequence: the trial only means something after the deep clean and after paint, adhesives, board and new upholstery have finished off-gassing, because scent over a construction smell gives you both at once. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. Ask us about a project specification and we will shortlist two profiles for you.

A note from Sonal
I am sent a lot of fragrance briefs that describe a mood, and almost none that describe a building. The useful brief is the boring one: what the floor is, what the joinery is, how much of the year the air conditioning runs, what the family cooks, and how many people come through the door on a normal evening. Give me those five things and the shortlist writes itself. Give me a mood board and we are guessing together.
Then trial it properly. A week each, in the house, after the deep clean, judged from the doorway rather than from beside the machine - and on the same Vaayu the client will keep, so nothing changes between the decision and the delivery. It covers 1000m³, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, so one unit runs the trial for the whole floor rather than one room of it.
And the honest part, which belongs in your handover document too. Olfactory signals reach the brain by a short pathway that sits close to the regions handling memory and emotion, which is why a smell can return a place to you years later, faster than a photograph of it can. That is a description of how recognition works, not a promise about mood or health: fragrance is a finish, it is not an air purifier, and we make no health claim for it. A home smells good because it is aired and clean first, then scented. Fragrance works alongside ventilation and cleaning, never instead of them. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. Frequently asked questions
How should a designer choose a signature fragrance for a client's home?
Brief it against the dominant materials rather than a season, shortlist exactly two profiles using your own judgement, then trial each on site for a full week at the same hour and the same air-conditioning setting, after the deep clean. Judge from the doorway on entry, not from beside the machine, and ask whether the client would want it every day for two years.
Why is a blotter a bad way to choose a home fragrance?
Because it tells you what an oil smells like on paper at arm's length, not what it does in a specific building. The same profile behaves differently with timber than with pale stone, changes with humidity and air conditioning, and has to sit alongside whatever the household cooks. Dry profiles often bloom in a house; sweet ones that charm on a blotter frequently turn cloying by the second week.
How long should an on-site fragrance trial run?
A week per option. The question with a signature scent is how it behaves on day six, not in the first minute, and a week also lets the client experience it on a working morning, a quiet afternoon and an evening with people over. A 400ml tank on a SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) runs up to about 75 days, so two weeks of trialling uses a small fraction of a fill.
What should be signed off and handed over?
In writing: the fragrance name, the intensity setting, the timer windows and the machine's position marked on the plan. In the handover pack: the same details plus the reorder link and the refill interval, which is up to about 75 days per 400ml tank depending on intensity and run hours, so roughly five fills a year. Key-lock the machine so the agreed setting holds.
What if someone in the household is sensitive to fragrance?
Raise it at briefing rather than at handover. Run at a lower intensity, ventilate well, keep the machine away from bedrooms, and be willing to conclude that a scented home is not right for that family. We make no health claim for fragrance in either direction, and it is not an air purifier.
