What is the default answer? A reed for the shared room you were received in. Garden Bloom 130ML at ₹1,299 above SOSA's 150 sq ft line, 50ML at ₹799 below it.
When should I buy nothing at all? If somebody in the house dislikes fragrance, if the home already smells of a scent they chose, or if an unrequested fragrance could be heard as a comment on how their home smells. Then take flowers.

2. Then size it from the room you were actually received in. SOSA publishes one rule for the whole range: 50ML for rooms up to about 150 sq ft, lasting 6 to 8 weeks; 130ML for living rooms and open-plan spaces above that, lasting 14 to 18 weeks. You have been in that room, so you can answer this.
3. Default to Garden Bloom, ₹799 at 50ML or ₹1,299 at 130ML. SOSA badges it "Most-Gifted Floral" and publishes it as its most-gifted reed diffuser, with the entryway and living room among its published rooms. A rose and jasmine floral reads as a flower rather than as a fix, which matters when nobody asked for a fragrance.
4. Hedge the scent instead of guessing it. The Day and Night duo at ₹1,498 is published as "the gift you give when you don't want to guess": two 50ML bottles for two rooms. It is the honest answer when you genuinely have no read on taste and the household is close enough to justify the register.
5. And know the three conditions under which the answer is not a reed. Somebody in the house dislikes fragrance; the home already smells of a scent they chose; or the gift could be heard as a comment on how their home smells. Any one of those and you take flowers. Not knowing somebody well enough is a reason to buy nothing, not a reason to guess harder.

Why your three rejected categories all failed
You have ruled out personal fragrance, food and decor, and it is worth seeing why each one failed, because the pattern is what produces the rule. Personal fragrance failed on intimacy: it is addressed to somebody's body and taste, and offering a view about either requires a closeness you do not have. Food failed on restrictions: sugar, dairy, nuts, gluten, fasting, and the fact that every one of those is a question you cannot ask without the question becoming the gift. Decor failed on style: it has to match a room you have seen once, from a chair.
Home fragrance fails on exactly one thing, which is taste in scent. That is not a small risk, and I am not going to pretend otherwise: taste in fragrance is more polarising than taste in ceramics, and people who would happily live with a vase somebody else chose will move a smell they dislike out of a room the same evening. But it is a single failure mode rather than four, and unlike style or dietary restriction it can be hedged deliberately. That is the entire reason this category is the answer to your question.
Question one: a room or a person
Every gift is addressed to something. Ask what, before you ask anything else. Objects addressed to a body require a view about a person: a size, a skin, a taste. Objects addressed to a room require a view about a room. With a household you do not know, only the second is available to you, and pretending otherwise is what produces the awkward gifts everybody remembers.
The practical test takes five seconds: could two different people in that home both reasonably say the gift was for them? A serving dish passes. A scarf does not. A reed diffuser passes about as clearly as anything, because nobody wears it, nobody has a size for it, and it works in shared air. It also has a quiet virtue nobody mentions: it can be put in a cupboard without anybody being hurt, which a gift addressed to a person cannot.
Question two: which room, and therefore which size
Name the room you were actually received in, and buy for that. Not the room you imagine they relax in, not a bedroom, not a kitchen: the room where you sat. With a household you do not know, that room has two advantages. You have stood in it, so you can size it. And it is unambiguously shared, so the gift cannot be read as being for one person.
SOSA publishes exactly one sizing rule across the whole reed range, and it is the only number you need: 50ML suits bathrooms, bedrooms and home offices up to about 150 sq ft and lasts 6 to 8 weeks; 130ML suits kitchens, living rooms and open-plan spaces above 150 sq ft and lasts 14 to 18 weeks. Garden Bloom's own page adds that its 50ML suits a single bedroom or an entryway and its 130ML a 1-BHK living room or a master bedroom. Most living rooms are above the line, so most of the time the answer is the 130ML.
Two exceptions worth knowing. If you were received in a compact sitting room, or if you want the smaller register because the occasion was modest, the 50ML at ₹799 is a completely defensible answer and it lands exactly where SOSA designed it if the household later moves it to a hall. And if the entrance opens straight into the living area, treat the two as one space, which puts it above the line and back on the 130ML at ₹1,299.
Question three: hedge the scent, do not guess it
This is the step almost everybody skips, and it is where the one real risk lives. You have no way to know whether this household likes rose, or coffee, or pine. So do not decide it on a hunch. There are two legitimate strategies and guessing is not one of them.
Strategy one: buy the consensus. Garden Bloom is badged "Most-Gifted Floral" and published as SOSA's most-gifted reed diffuser, with gifting copy that names Diwali, weddings and anniversaries. That is evidence about what households accept, which is precisely the evidence you lack. A floral also reads as a flower rather than as a solution, which matters when nobody asked for a fragrance.
Strategy two: buy two. The Day and Night duo at ₹1,498 is published as "the gift you give when you don't want to guess": two 50ML bottles, Morning Freshness and Evening Calm, for two different rooms, so one of them is likely to suit. Bought as singles the two are ₹1,548, so the duo is about ₹50 under, and the saving is incidental: the reason to buy a duo is the hedge, not the discount.
One caution on the duo, since this page is about households you do not know. Half of it is Evening Calm, and every room SOSA publishes for that scent is a private one: bedroom, guest room, reading nook, evening bath, meditation corner. Handing a near-stranger a bottle whose published home is their bedroom quietly reintroduces the intimacy problem you were avoiding, and at ₹1,498 the register is high for a first invitation. Use the duo where the relationship is warm but the taste is unknown, not where both are unknown.
Question four: the three conditions that stop everything
The most useful thing on this page is the permission to buy nothing. Not knowing a household well enough is a reason to stop, not a reason to guess harder, and there are three specific conditions where a reed is simply the wrong object however well you choose it.
One: somebody in the house dislikes fragrance. Plenty of people do. A reed cannot be turned below its lowest setting and cannot be switched off before somebody arrives; from the moment the reeds go in it runs continuously until the oil is gone. The only adjustment is the reed count. If you have any signal at all on this, respect it.
Two: the home already smells of a scent they chose. If you noticed something when you walked in, they have made this decision already and made it carefully. Another bottle is then an edit rather than a gift, and nobody enjoys receiving a correction to a choice they were pleased with.
Three: it could be heard as a comment on how their home smells. This is the real social risk in the category and it is almost never written down. An unrequested fragrance carries an implication, and whether it lands depends on the relationship rather than on your intention. The risk is highest exactly where this page is aimed: a household you do not know, no shared history to absorb the ambiguity. You reduce it by choosing a floral rather than anything that sounds like freshening, by naming a shared room rather than a kitchen or a bathroom, and by keeping the volume low. You do not remove it. If the thought has occurred to you, that instinct is information: take flowers.
The whole rule in one table
Four questions, in order, with what each answer commits you to. Work down it and you will land on a single named bottle and a size, or on the honest conclusion that this is not the gift for this house.
| Question | If the answer is... | Then |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Is it addressed to a room or to a person? | A person: worn, eaten, sized | Put it down. You do not have the standing with this household |
| 2. How big is the room you were received in? | Above about 150 sq ft, which most living rooms are | Garden Bloom 130ML at ₹1,299, 14 to 18 weeks |
| 2b. And if it is a compact sitting room, or a hall? | Up to about 150 sq ft | Garden Bloom 50ML at ₹799, 6 to 8 weeks, or 3 reeds for softer |
| 3. Do you have any read on their taste in scent? | None at all, but the relationship is warm | Day and Night duo at ₹1,498: published as the gift for when you don't want to guess |
| 4. Is any stop condition true? | Dislikes fragrance, already scented, or could read as a comment | Buy nothing here. Take flowers or something for the table |

The SOSA edit for a household you do not know
All five SOSA reeds are alcohol-free and flame-free, use 6 fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle and need no power point. What separates them for this question is not strength or price, since the five 50ML bottles all sit within a hundred rupees of each other, but how public the rooms SOSA publishes for each one are. A scent whose published rooms are all private is the wrong gift for somebody you barely know, however good it is. One last practical note: there is no published gift note or message card, and wrapping exists only as an email request to sosahomeandbody@gmail.com, so if you want something written, write it yourself on a card of your own.
| Reed or duo | SOSA's published rooms | Role in the decision rule | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garden Bloom | Entryway, living room, hallways; bedroom at 3 reeds; bathrooms at 50ML | The default. Badged Most-Gifted Floral and published as SOSA's most-gifted reed, and all of its headline rooms are public. 3 of 6 reeds is a published softer setting, which is the etiquette control. 50ML ₹799, 130ML ₹1,299 | ₹799 / ₹1,299 |
| Day and Night duo | Two bottles for two rooms: Morning Freshness and Evening Calm | The hedge, for a warm relationship with an unknown taste. Published as the gift you give when you don't want to guess; the two 50ML singles are ₹1,548 bought separately. 130ML pair ₹2,498 | ₹1,498 |
| Evening Calm | Guest room, bedroom, reading nook, evening bath, meditation corner | Not for a household you do not know. Every room SOSA publishes for it is a private one, which puts it on the wrong side of the intimacy line. A very good gift once you know somebody. 130ML ₹1,299 | ₹799 |
Versailles
The reason this question is hard is that people are looking for a safe object and there is no such thing. What there is, is a safe address. Send the gift to a room rather than to a person and most of the difficulty disappears, because a room asks nothing of you except its approximate size, and you have stood in it.
After that it is two decisions. Which size, which SOSA answers with one line about 150 sq ft. And whether to guess the scent or hedge it, and I would always hedge. Garden Bloom is the one we are asked for most as a gift, and the duo exists for the days when even that feels like a bet.
The part I would most like you to take from this page is the fourth question. If somebody in that house does not want a smell, or they already chose one, or you think a bottle of scent might be heard as a remark about their home, then buy flowers and think no more about it. I would rather you gave nothing of ours than gave something that landed badly. A girl gets a classroom through Nanhi Kali when you come back for the housewarming.
