There is a number people want here and I cannot give them one, because intensity is not a figure you can post on the internet - it belongs to your building, your air handling and your doors. What I can give you is the test, and the test takes ninety minutes and costs nothing.
Quick answers — read this first
How strong should fragrance be when customers spend 60-90 minutes choosing a kitchen?Lower than in any retail category you have shopped in yourself. A clothes shop sets a level for someone who is there for eight minutes and moving. You are setting one for someone seated at a table for ninety, and fragrance keeps arriving for the whole of that time. The target is just detectable when you walk in from the street, and gone from your attention within a minute of sitting down. If a customer can name the fragrance, it is already too strong.
How do I actually find the setting? By sitting in it. Set the machine, wait a day, then sit at your own consultation table for a full ninety minutes doing work that needs concentration - not scrolling, actual work. Then ask the designers who use that table nine hours a day, six days a week, after an ordinary week rather than on the day you installed it. They hold the only real measurement in the building. Treat a hesitation as a no, and turn it down a notch rather than debating it.
Which machine, and what does it cost? For a showroom past about 1,500 sq ft, one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, and part of what you are buying is the ability to run it near the bottom of its range with a key-lock holding it there. Under about 750 sq ft the honest answer is one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. Total hardware spend: ₹11,999, one machine.
The short answer
Short answer: lower than in any other retail category, because exposure compounds across a sixty to ninety minute seated consultation. Set the level for the ninetieth minute rather than the arrival: just detectable walking in from outside, and out of your attention a minute after you sit down. One Vaayu at ₹11,999 run near the bottom of its range, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 under 750 sq ft.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) run near the bottom of its intensity range with the key-lock on, or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) where the showroom is a single room under about 750 sq ft.
Next step: tell us the cubic volume of the display floor, the ceiling height and how long a typical consultation runs, and we will give you a starting setting and a way to test it - Ask for a retail scenting plan.
Almost every over-scented showroom I visit was set by someone standing in the doorway with the door open. The doorway is the one place in the building where the reading is meaningless.

How strong should fragrance be in a showroom where customers spend sixty to ninety minutes choosing a kitchen?
Lower than you think, lower than any shop you have been in, and lower than the setting the machine will arrive on. Here is the reasoning, because the reasoning is more useful than a number I would be making up. Fragrance intensity is not a property of a fragrance; it is a property of a room over a length of time. A customer walking through a clothing store is exposed for perhaps eight minutes while moving through changing air. A customer in your showroom sits down at a table with a designer and does not get up for sixty to ninety minutes, sometimes twice across a fortnight, while making a decision worth several lakh. Over that period the fragrance does not stop arriving. Their exposure accumulates, and the level that felt correct as they walked past the reception desk is very often wrong by the time the shutter colour is chosen. That is why a kitchen showroom sits lower on the dial than any retail category I write plans for, and it is the single defining fact of this vertical. Against that sits a countervailing fact, which is that your own judgement is unreliable in a specific and measurable way: the human nose adapts to a constant background within about twenty minutes. You arrive at nine, the showroom smells lovely, and by half past nine it smells of nothing at all to you. Every instinct after that pushes you to turn it up, because you cannot smell what your customer can. This is how showrooms drift upwards over months without anybody making a decision to do it. So the level must be set by people who are not you, in a place that is not the doorway. Two measurements, in this order. First, your designers. They breathe that air nine hours a day, six days a week, and they will tell you honestly if you ask them properly - after a normal week, not on installation day, and privately rather than in a group where nobody wants to seem difficult. If a designer hesitates before saying it is fine, that is a no. Second, yourself, in the chair. Set the machine, leave it a day so the room reaches a steady state, then sit at the consultation table for a full ninety minutes doing work that requires concentration. Not on your phone - a spreadsheet, a drawing, something that occupies you the way choosing a kitchen occupies a customer. If at minute seventy you have started to notice the fragrance again, it is too high. The target is a room that reads as looked-after rather than as scented, and the practical rule I use is that if a customer can name the fragrance, it is too strong. Nobody should be able to tell you it is pine. They should tell you the showroom feels clean. On register, none of this changes what the fragrance is: dry, clean and material-led - dry woods, something green or herbal, a dry tea, clean mineral - and nothing edible. Vanilla, coffee and baking are wrong at any level, and they are wrong faster at a high one. Our own Fresh Brew, coffee and vanilla at ₹849, is the exact register to avoid here. On hardware: for a showroom past about 1,500 sq ft, one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999. What you are buying for restraint specifically is adjustable intensity that can sit near the bottom of its range because the machine is rated to 1000m³ and your floor is smaller than that, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers so it runs on trading hours rather than continuously, and a key-lock so the setting you found from the chair cannot be raised by somebody standing at the door. Under about 750 sq ft the honest buy is one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. Three limits stand regardless of the number you land on. Anybody on the floor must be able to switch it off in seconds, without asking. Fragrance is never a mask for laminate, adhesive or new joinery, which need ventilation and curing time. And plainly: no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, enquiries, order value or a customer's decision to buy a kitchen, and a supplier who offers you a figure is selling. Ask for a retail scenting plan and tell us the cubic volume.
Set it for the ninetieth minute, not the arrival. Just detectable from the street, out of mind a minute after sitting down. Prove it by sitting at your own table for ninety minutes and by asking the designers. One Vaayu at ₹11,999, run near the bottom of its range.
The machine that lets you be restrained is a SOSA Vaayu - adjustable intensity with plenty of headroom because it is rated to 1000m³, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers for trading hours, and a key-lock that holds the setting you found from the chair. ₹11,999. Under 750 sq ft buy the Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, roughly 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop and key-lock. Being rated above your floor is the point: it runs near the bottom of its range rather than straining at the top.
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. For a single-room showroom this is the honest buy at a sixth of the price, and the same ninety-minute test applies to setting it - from the chair, after a week, with the designers asked properly.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.
Three things have to be true before a setting can be called correct, and none of them can be established from the entrance on the day of installation.
1
Set it for minute ninety
Exposure accumulates, so the arrival is the least informative moment of the visit
Ninety minutes of continuous low-level fragrance is a completely different exposure from thirty seconds of the same output, and only one of those is what your customer receives. So stop judging by the entrance. The moment that matters is the end of the consultation: the point where the finishes are agreed, the quotation is being read, and the customer has been in the same chair for an hour and a half. A setting is only correct if it is still comfortable at that moment, and if you get that right the arrival looks after itself - a room that is right at minute ninety reads as clean and looked-after at minute one. The reverse is never true.
Tip: Right at minute ninety is always right at minute one. Not the other way round.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
Your designers hold the only real measurement in the building
Your own nose adapts within about twenty minutes, which disqualifies you as an instrument in your own showroom. Your customers will not tell you - almost nobody complains about a smell in a shop, they simply feel slightly worse and go home. That leaves your design team, and they are a genuinely good instrument because they experience the room the way a customer does but for far longer. Ask each of them privately, after an ordinary trading week, and treat any hesitation as a no. A group conversation produces agreement rather than information. When they say it is too much, it is too much, and the correct response is to turn it down that afternoon rather than to explain the specification to them.
Tip: Ask privately. Nobody wants to be the one difficult person in a meeting.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
The test costs nothing and it is the only one that reproduces the customer's experience
Set the machine, leave it a full day so the room settles, then sit at the consultation table for ninety minutes doing something that occupies you. Take a notebook and mark the clock at twenty, forty-five, seventy and ninety minutes with one word: unnoticeable, pleasant, noticeable, too much. If you write noticeable before minute seventy, take the setting down a step and repeat on another day. Most showrooms need two or three rounds of this, and almost every one ends lower than where it began. Write the final number on a card and tape it inside the machine's cupboard, with the date, so the next person who wonders has an answer rather than a dial.
Tip: Record the setting and the date. A number nobody wrote down always drifts.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
Intensity is not a property of a fragrance, it is a property of a room multiplied by a length of time - and this vertical has the longest time of any retail category, which is why it takes the smallest number.
Everything else in a scenting plan is a preference. This is arithmetic, and it only points one way.
Headroom is the feature: Rated to 1000m³, so on a smaller display floor the Vaayu runs near the bottom of its intensity range rather than at the top. ₹11,999.
The doorway is the worst place in your building to judge a fragrance, and it is where almost every showroom's level was decided. Sit in the chair for ninety minutes and you will lower it. Everybody does.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA
The controls restraint actually needs
Intensity you can lower, a lock that keeps it lowered
Two machines cover almost every kitchen showroom, and the difference between them is size rather than discipline - the ninety-minute test is the same on both. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and continuity of supply should be confirmed with SOSA before a rollout. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA kitchen-showroom specification
The lowest workable setting, found from the chair and then locked
Find the number from the consultation chair at minute ninety, confirm it with the designers who sit there all week, then lock it and write it down with the date. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like the lighting over your sample wall; it is never a mask for laminate, adhesive or new joinery, which need ventilation and curing time instead; and no one can promise you that scent moves a business number, so a supplier quoting you one is selling rather than advising. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
People write to me wanting a number, and I understand why - a number can be typed into an app and forgotten about. But there is no honest universal number, because the same machine at the same setting reads completely differently in a sealed 3,000 sq ft floor with the air handling running and in a 900 sq ft room with a glass door opening every four minutes. What I can hand over is a method, and the method is better than a number because it keeps working when you move the machine, change the AC or open a second floor.
The heart of it is that this vertical has the longest customer dwell of any retail category I write for. Ninety minutes seated is not a longer version of eight minutes walking, it is a different problem, and exposure over that time is what makes a kitchen showroom the quietest room in my whole retail practice. Everything else follows: judge it from the chair rather than the door, believe your designers over your own nose, and remember that a customer who can name your fragrance is telling you it is too strong without meaning to.
On hardware: a Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a floor past 1,500 sq ft, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 under 750, and in both cases the discipline matters more than the machine. Fragrance is never a substitute for ventilation, nobody can promise you a commercial result, and if the showroom still smells of its own fit-out then no setting is the right setting yet. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
How strong should fragrance be when customers spend 60 to 90 minutes choosing a kitchen?
Lower than in any other retail category. Exposure accumulates across a long seated visit, so a level that feels right at the entrance is often wrong by the end of the consultation. Aim for just detectable when you walk in from the street and out of your attention a minute after sitting down. The practical rule is that if a customer can name the fragrance, it is already too strong.
How do I test the level properly?
Set the machine, leave it a full day, then sit at your own consultation table for ninety minutes doing work that needs concentration, marking the clock at twenty, forty-five, seventy and ninety minutes. If you notice the fragrance again before minute seventy, take it down a step and repeat on another day. Then ask each designer privately after an ordinary week and treat any hesitation as a no.
Why can't I judge my own showroom's fragrance?
Because the nose adapts to a constant background within about twenty minutes. You arrive, it smells lovely, and by half past nine it smells of nothing to you at all, which pushes you to turn it up. That is how showrooms drift upwards over months with nobody deciding to do it. The designers who sit in the room all week, and a ninety-minute sit in the chair, are more reliable than you are.
Which machine lets me run a low setting reliably?
A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 for a showroom past about 1,500 sq ft. It is rated to 1000m3, so on a smaller floor it runs near the bottom of its intensity range rather than straining at the top, and the key-lock keeps the setting you chose from the chair. Under about 750 sq ft the honest buy is a SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,899 and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy.
Does a longer visit mean scent has more chance to influence a customer?
No one can promise anything of the kind, and I will not. SOSA has run no research that would support a figure, and there is no honest way to separate ambient scent from the design work, the samples and the pricing across a ninety-minute meeting. Long visits matter here for one reason only: exposure accumulates, which means the correct level is lower, not that the fragrance is doing more work.
The smaller showroom, same discipline: A SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 for a single room under about 750 sq ft, set by exactly the same ninety-minute test.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference.
