The fan in your ceiling moves more air in an hour than any diffuser will move in a year. That makes the air conditioning your distribution system, and the only real decision is whether you hand the scent to it or fight it.

Return path or supply blast - which one do I aim for? The return path, and never the supply. Does this mean I should put my reed diffuser next to the return grille? No - that rule is for an active machine, and the distinction matters. A bottle beside a return grille is simply having its output drawn out of the part of the room people occupy, because it has no way of dosing the duct. It needs still air. System rule one
Find the return before you find a shelf
Most clinic owners cannot tell me which of their grilles is which, and it is the first thing to establish because everything else depends on it. Hold a sheet of tissue paper flat against each grille with the system running. Where it sticks, air is being drawn in: that is the return. Where it blows away, that is the supply. In a ducted fit-out the return is usually the larger plain grille, often low on a wall or near the plant cupboard, and the supplies are the smaller vaned ones across the ceiling. In a cassette the return is the centre panel and the supplies are the four slots around it. Mark both on your plan in pen.
Tip: Do the tissue test twice, once with the system on its normal setting and once with it boosted. Some systems change which grilles are active.
Once you know where the return is, a mounted Vaayu can be put a metre or two upstream of it and let the loop do the carrying.
The supply jet is not a shortcut, it is a shredder
The instinct to put the source in the strongest air in the room is understandable and it is exactly backwards. Air leaving a supply grille is moving fast, aimed along one axis, and considerably colder than the room, because it has just come off a coil. Three things follow. The output is dispersed before a level can build anywhere. It is thrown along that single axis, so one side of the reception gets a streak and the rest gets nothing. And the lower temperature slows evaporation, so a passive source in that position quietly produces less while appearing to be in the busiest part of the room. If your clinic already has a bottle sitting under a wall unit or a cassette, that is very likely the whole explanation for a room that reads weak everywhere except one corridor.

This is the part people discover three months in. When the air conditioning is off, your distribution system is off, and a machine running into a still building reverts to a point source with a strong patch around it. Running before the system starts wastes oil into a room that will not carry it. Running after it stops leaves an accumulation sitting in still air overnight for whoever opens up.
