How Do I Create Scented Public Areas and Fragrance-Free Clinical Zones in a Maternity Centre?

Write it as a document, in four parts, and write the parts in this order. Part one is the fragrance-free list, and it goes first. List the rooms by name rather than by category - consultation, scan, examination and procedure rooms, delivery and recovery, postnatal rooms and any area with babies, lactation and feeding rooms, diagnostics and imaging, and every clinical corridor - because a named room is much harder to quietly scent than a room covered by a principle. Write beside the list that unscented means unscented rather than a lower setting, and that it covers machines, reeds, sprays and plug-ins equally. Write the reason down too, because whoever inherits this document will need it: the patient is in that room for a long appointment, cannot leave it, is often undressed or holding an infant, and she did not choose the fragrance. Part two is the scented zone, defined as whatever is left. In most maternity centres that is the entrance, reception, the public waiting area, and genuinely non-clinical lounge or administrative space - and nothing else. Defining it as a remainder rather than as a wish list is the entire trick of this post, because a map that starts with the areas you want scented always ends with somebody arguing for an exception in a room that should never have had one. Part three is the settings: one profile, clean, dry and cool and never floral, powdery or lavender; the lowest usable level, judged by walking in from outside, with the rule that if a patient can identify the fragrance it is too strong; run hours on a timer covering clinic hours only; and the machine's position, away from the corridor mouth and any return-air grille. It is worth knowing operationally that a maternity front desk simply receives more requests for no fragrance than a general clinic's does - plan for it rather than explain it. Then one appendix: the airflow questions for your facilities engineer, principally whether the public zone and the clinical rooms share return air and whether that return can be isolated. Ducting and filtration are theirs to answer, not a fragrance company's. Hardware is the smallest part.
