Yes — and it is my favourite free upgrade for a reed. A reed has no fan of its own, so it borrows the room's air movement. In an Indian living room that runs its AC half the year, you have a fan built into the ceiling. Use it.
Quick answer
Yes, effectively. A reed can't push scent by itself — it needs moving air. The AC's airflow carries the fragrance further, so the room smells fuller.
Near the airflow, not under the vent. A little to the side, or near the return — enough breeze to pick the scent up, not blast it away.
Small trade-off: more airflow means the bottle empties a touch faster. Keep a refill handy.
The short version
Short answer: Yes — airflow is the reed's missing fan, so it throws further. Place it in the draught, not under the vent.
To understand why the AC helps, remember what a reed actually is. It is a passive diffuser — no heat, no mist, no motor. The sticks wick fragrant oil up from the bottle and it evaporates off their surface into the surrounding air. That is the whole machine. Which means the reed can only scent the air that is already moving past it. In perfectly still air, the fragrance evaporates but just hangs in a small cloud over the bottle; it smells lovely up close and thin across the room. Give that same bottle a current of air, and the fragrance is lifted off the sticks and carried out into the space. The reed hasn't changed — its delivery has.
An air conditioner is one of the best gentle currents a home has. Running most of the day in our climate, it keeps a steady, low movement of air across the room. Set a reed in that path and you have effectively given it a fan. The scent reaches the far sofa instead of stopping at the coffee table. Many people who thought their reed was "weak" simply had it in dead air; the fix was ten seconds of moving it into the draught.
The SOSA principle
A reed doesn't make wind — it rides it. Put it where the air moves and the whole room gets the fragrance.
The AC is the reed's fan. Near the airflow, a modest bottle throws like a bigger one; in a dead corner, even a full bottle stays a secret.

Near the AC a reed evaporates faster — worth it for the throw. A 130ml or a refill keeps it topped up.

How to place it — and the one thing to avoid
The nuance is "near" the airflow, not "in the blast." Directly under a strong cold vent the air can be so forceful it drives the scent straight past the room before it disperses, and the bottle just empties. Instead, set the reed a little to the side of the vent, or near the return grille where the AC draws air back — both give you the steady movement without the gale. Fan all the sticks out wide so more surface is exposed to the passing air, and flip them weekly to refresh the ends. That is the whole technique.
And note the important contrast with the last thing you should do: put a reed on heat. Moving cool air from an AC is exactly what a reed wants; a warm surface — a TV unit, a heater, direct sun — is exactly what it doesn't. Heat evaporates the oil far too fast and unbalances the scent, draining the bottle in days. Cool airflow spreads the fragrance; heat burns through it. Same idea of "the air matters," opposite results.
"People buy a stronger reed when they only needed a better breeze. Set it near the AC and the bottle you already own throws twice as far."

One honest limit: the AC helps a reed reach its potential, but it cannot make a small bottle fill a large volume. If your living room is big or open-plan and the scent still thins at the edges even in good airflow, that is a coverage ceiling. Keep the reed as a soft base near the seating and add a powered diffuser that rides the same airflow — a Sukoon for a mid-size room, or the waterless SOSA Vaayu for a large floor. The Vaayu is especially at home in an AC living room: it adds no humidity at all, and its own airflow plus the AC's carries one even signature corner to corner. As ever, scent crowns clean, aired air — the AC's job here is to move fragrance, not to excuse a room that needs a window opened.
Frequently asked
Does putting a reed diffuser near the AC make it smell stronger?
Yes, effectively. A reed diffuser has no fan of its own, so it relies on the room's air movement to carry its scent. Placing it in the path of the AC's airflow gives it that movement, so the fragrance travels further and the room smells noticeably fuller. The AC becomes the reed's fan. It is one of the simplest ways to get more throw from the same bottle.
Should the reed be right under the AC vent?
No — near the airflow, not blasted by it. Directly under a strong cold vent the air can be too forceful and the scent gets pushed straight past the room. Place the bottle a little to the side, in the gentle draught the AC creates, or near the return where air is drawn back. You want the moving air to pick the fragrance up and spread it, not to hammer the bottle.
Does the AC make the reed run out faster?
A little, yes. More airflow means more evaporation, so a reed in the AC's path empties somewhat sooner than one in still air — the same trade you make for the extra throw. It is usually well worth it in a living room, where reach matters more than squeezing out an extra week. A 130ml bottle or a
refill on hand offsets the shorter life.
Will the cold air weaken the fragrance?
No. Cool air evaporates oil a touch more slowly than warm air, but the benefit of the movement far outweighs it — a reed in moving cold air throws much further than one sitting in still, warm air. What you must avoid is the opposite of the AC: a heat source, which evaporates the oil far too fast and unbalances the scent. Moving air good, heat bad.
My living room is large and even near the AC the reed feels light — what now?
You have reached the reed's coverage limit; airflow helps but cannot make one small bottle fill a big volume. Add a second reed at the far end, or bring in a powered diffuser that also uses the AC's airflow — a
Sukoon for a mid-size room, or the waterless
SOSA Vaayu for a large or open-plan floor. The Vaayu is ideal in an AC room because it adds no humidity and carries one even signature corner to corner.

Let the AC be your reed's fan.
Set a SOSA alcohol-free reed diffuser in the AC's airflow and the same bottle throws across the whole room. For a large or open-plan AC space, step up to the waterless Vaayu — no humidity, one even signature corner to corner.
