A spray is an event. A hanging perfume is a state
Most comparisons between car fragrance formats are about intensity, and that is the wrong axis. The Mysore Orange Blossom car perfume spray at five hundred and forty-nine rupees is not a stronger or weaker version of a hanging perfume. It is a different kind of thing. A hanging perfume produces a state: the car smells of something, all the time, for months, without anybody doing anything. A spray produces an event: the car smells of something now, because somebody decided it should, and in a few hours it does not. That distinction decides who each one suits, and it has nothing to do with taste. Three kinds of owner are better served by the spray. The first is anybody whose car regularly carries other people. Parents, in-laws, colleagues on a shared commute, clients, a friend with a low tolerance for fragrance, a child in the back. A continuously working product decides on behalf of every one of them for the duration of a journey they cannot leave. A spray makes that decision each time, which means the car can be neutral when neutral is right - a client who does not like scent, a passenger with a preference, a long drive in May when the last thing anybody wants is more of anything. The second is somebody who wears perfume deliberately. A car holds a few cubic metres of air, and a long drive puts a little of whatever is in that air onto clothes and hair. A continuously working car fragrance is therefore permanently in conversation with whatever they put on that morning. With a spray, they can leave the car neutral on the days they have dressed carefully and use it on the days they have not. The third is the owner who is particular about their interior. A hanging object is visible, and in a car where every element was chosen deliberately, a visible object introduced by somebody else is the only one that was not. A spray lives in a door pocket or the glovebox and appears only when used. For a recipient who cares how the cabin looks, being handed something that leaves no trace is the more considerate gift, and it costs less than most alternatives. There is a fourth use that people discover on their own and it is worth mentioning, because it is the thing spray owners actually like. A spray is useful right after something. After a long drive with the windows shut. After carrying something in the boot. After the car has been sitting sealed in the sun all afternoon. In each case a hanging perfume has been working the whole time and has already done whatever it is going to do, while a spray is a fresh action taken at the moment it is wanted. That is a genuinely different experience of a car, and some people much prefer it. Now the honest limitation, because a spray has one. It requires a habit. It has to be kept in the car, remembered, and used - and a car is the least maintained space most people own. If the recipient is the sort who would rather nothing ever needed doing, a hanging car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine to five hundred and nine rupees is the better gift, because it works for months without a single action. There is no shame in that being the answer; it is the answer for most people. The eight hanging perfumes are Jasmine four hundred and forty-nine, Lavender and Sandalwood four hundred and seventy-nine, Icy Mint four hundred and eighty-nine, Lemon four hundred and ninety-nine, and Vetiver, Sea Breeze and Oud five hundred and nine, and the choice between them is decided by where the car parks, because heat pushes sweetness forward dramatically in a sealed cabin and dry, green, citrus and marine registers behave. If you want to hand over the decision rather than the format, the discovery set of three sprays at six hundred and ninety-nine rupees is the natural gift: three registers to try in their own car over a few weeks, which also lets them find out whether they are a spray person at all. For a car that carries passengers, that set is arguably the best-judged present in the entire range. Timing follows the standing rule of this cluster regardless of format. Do not give car fragrance in the first weeks to cover the new-car smell: owners like it, it fades on its own as the interior settles, and anything arriving in that window reads as a comment on the car. Month two or three is honest. One practical note that applies to sprays specifically: it belongs in the cabin rather than the boot, and it should be used on fabric surfaces sparingly and away from anything the driver has to see through. And the standing boundary of this cluster: fragrance is a finishing touch, never a fix. A spray is particularly tempting to use over a smell with a cause, and that is exactly when it should not be used - find the source, deal with it, and scent a clean car afterwards.

| Gift | What it suits | Why it works for a new car | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jasmine hanging car perfume | The entry gift · ₹449 | The cheapest car item in the range and a complete gift on its own - floral rather than sweet, and best in a car that is parked in shade | ₹449 |
| Icy Mint hanging car perfume | Safest in Indian heat | Cool and dry, which is the register that holds up after an afternoon in the sun - the one to choose when you are guessing | ₹489 |
| Vetiver hanging car perfume | Somebody who dislikes sweet | Earthy and dry, the most grown-up of the eight, and the least likely to tire over a long daily commute | ₹509 |
| Car discovery set (pack of 3) | You do not know their taste | Three sprays so the owner picks - the sensible move, because a car is the least forgiving fragrance space there is | ₹699 |
| Mysore Orange Blossom car spray | Somebody particular about the car | Applied by hand when they want it rather than working continuously - which suits an owner who controls everything about the interior | ₹549 |
| SOSA Safar waterless car diffuser | Hours a week behind the wheel | The premium car object almost nobody buys for themselves - and it should be given with a nebuliser refill rather than empty | ₹3,999 |
Versailles
We sell a lot of car fragrance and we talk people out of buying it more often than you would expect. The reason is always the same. Somebody has just taken delivery, the car has that specific smell of a new interior, and the instinct is to buy something to put in it straight away. Please do not. Most owners like that smell, it fades on its own within a few weeks, and something arriving on top of it reads as though you thought their new car needed fixing. Month two or three, once it has started to smell of ordinary use, is the moment - and it has a second advantage, which is that everybody else has finished congratulating them by then.
The other thing people get wrong is the register. A car is not a small room. It holds a few cubic metres of air, it sits sealed in the sun for hours, and heat does something to sweetness that has to be experienced to be believed - and unlike a room, the driver cannot walk away from it. Dry, green, citrus and marine compositions behave. If you are guessing, guess cool. And one is the right number: two of anything in a car is usually too much by May.
Two honest things. Fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix - if a car smells of damp, of something spilled under a seat or of smoke, deal with the cause and then scent a clean car, because adding one to the other is worse than either alone. And our Vaayu is not a car product. It is a waterless nebuliser built for roughly a thousand cubic metres - a showroom rather than a vehicle or a flat - and we would rather say so than sell you one.
