I will not hand you a false certainty here. Babies and young children can be more sensitive than adults, newborns especially, and their reactions are not something a fragrance brand can speak to. The honest, responsible answer is to ask your paediatrician, who knows your child. If your paediatrician is comfortable and you do choose to use a car freshener, three things matter most: keep it physically out of a child’s reach (a hanging diffuser or spray bottle is not a toy and should never be within grasp), keep the dose very light, and ventilate the cabin. A clean formula helps - SOSA is alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free and IFRA-compliant - but that is a free-from profile, not a medical safety claim for children. And the simplest, always-valid choice is a fragrance-free car. With a baby on board, less is truly more, and nothing at all is perfectly fine.

If you and your paediatrician decide a light scent is acceptable, the practical rules are straightforward and have as much to do with physical safety as with the fragrance itself. A bottle or diffuser within a toddler’s reach is a hazard regardless of what is inside it.
The non-negotiables
Out of reach: mount any diffuser high and keep sprays in a locked glovebox or boot - never in a seat pocket a child can explore. Light dose: a faint hint, never a fog. Ventilation: crack a window or run fresh air, particularly on short stops. These are about a child’s curiosity as much as their sense of smell.
It is also worth repeating that a freshener scents the air; it does not purify it. If you are trying to deal with a stuffy or milk-spill smell, ventilation and cleaning do the real work - fragrance only masks it.
The calm framing
With a baby on board, nothing at all is a complete answer.

✕Pushing through. If your child seems unsettled by a scent, remove it and ask your paediatrician.
