Most people who write to me about a consultation studio have priced the big machine already. I nearly always send them back down the ladder, because the two things that make a studio different from a showroom - it is small, and people sit in it for an hour and a half - both argue for less fragrance rather than more.
Quick answers — read this first
What should a kitchen design consultation studio smell like? Dry and material-led, with nothing edible in it at all. Dry woods such as cedar, pine and sage if your samples and joinery are warm; a dry green or clean mineral register if the room is white and minimal. What you are aiming for is the air of a well-kept home with the windows open, not the smell of a meal. Vanilla, coffee, baking and warm spice are all wrong here, and they are wrong more quickly in a small room than anywhere else.

Which machine does a studio actually need? One SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, and I would rather tell you that than sell you the ₹11,999 machine. A consultation-led studio is usually one room of 300 to 600 sq ft with a table in it. The Vaayu is rated to 1000m³, roughly seven times the air you have, so it would spend its life throttled down to its floor. A Vaayu would be the wrong buy here, and a ₹849 reed is a legitimate answer if you want no schedule at all.

How low is low? Lower than any other room in this cluster. Your customer sits down at ten past eleven and stands up at half past twelve, and the fragrance keeps arriving for the whole of that time - exposure compounds over ninety minutes. Set the machine to the lowest setting that is detectable at all when you walk in from outside, then sit at your own table for a full ninety minutes and see whether you still want it there. Total hardware spend: ₹1,899, one machine.
The short answer
Short answer: dry and material-led with nothing edible in it - dry woods for warm rooms, dry green or clean mineral for white and minimal ones - run at the lowest detectable level, because a studio is a small room where the customer stays for sixty to ninety minutes. The honest machine is one Sukoon at ₹1,899, not a Vaayu.
The pick: one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) placed away from the consultation table and run on its lowest setting, or a Mountain Breeze reed (₹849) if the studio is under about 300 sq ft and you would rather not run a schedule at all.
Next step: send the studio's dimensions including ceiling height, say where the table sits and where the air comes in, and we will tell you which of the two is honest for your room - Ask for a retail scenting plan.

A studio is not a small showroom. It is a room where one or two people sit still for an hour and a half, and that is a completely different scenting problem from a floor people walk through.

Straight answer
What is the best fragrance, and the right machine, for a kitchen design consultation studio?
Start with the register, because it is the easy half. A consultation studio should smell dry, clean and material-led: dry woods such as cedar, pine and sage where your joinery, veneer samples and furniture are warm; a dry green, a dry tea or a clean mineral note where the room is white, grey and minimal. And it must contain nothing edible whatsoever - no vanilla, no baking, no coffee, no caramel, no chocolate, no honey, no cinnamon or warm spice. I will name our own product rather than be coy about it: SOSA's Fresh Brew, which is Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla, is exactly the register to avoid in this room, and I would not sell you one for a kitchen studio. A brand designing ₹5 to ₹10 lakh kitchens that smells of cake reads as a bakery, and in a small room the mismatch arrives faster and stays longer. The aspiration people actually have - that the studio should feel like a beautiful home - is entirely achievable without a single edible note, because a well-kept home smells of clean air, timber, stone and laundry for thirteen hours a day and of dinner for one. Now the harder half, which is the level and the hardware, and here the studio is genuinely different from every other room in this cluster. Two things are true at once. It is small: a consultation-led studio is typically one room of 300 to 600 sq ft, sometimes with a partitioned sample wall, rarely with a real display floor. And its customers do not walk through it - they sit down at a table with a designer for sixty to ninety minutes, sometimes twice in a fortnight. Those two facts compound. A small volume of air means any given output reads stronger; a long, seated visit means exposure keeps accumulating for the whole ninety minutes rather than lasting the thirty seconds a shopper spends walking a shop floor. So this room takes the lowest setting anywhere in this cluster, and I mean genuinely low: barely detectable when you walk in from the street, and gone from your attention entirely by the time you have taken your coat off. The honest test costs you nothing and is the only one that works - sit at your own consultation table for a full ninety minutes, doing something that requires concentration, and see whether you are still glad the fragrance is there. Your designers, who breathe that air nine hours a day, six days a week, hold the only real measurement in the building; ask them after a normal week and treat a hesitation as a no. On the machine, I will talk you down. The honest buy is one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, which is rated for roughly 270-320 sq ft and ships with three 15ml fragrances so you can live with a register for a week before deciding. A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 would be the wrong buy for a studio - it is rated to 1000m³, roughly seven times the air a studio holds, and you would spend its life keeping it at the bottom of its range. It becomes the right machine when you have an entrance, a separate consultation room and a display floor to connect, which is a different building from the one this post is about. If your studio is under about 300 sq ft, a Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849 is a perfectly serious answer and needs no schedule at all. Three standing limits before you spend anything. Fragrance here is a presentation decision, like the lighting over your sample wall; it is never a mask for laminate, adhesive or new joinery, and if your studio is newly fitted out the answer is ventilation and weeks of curing time, not a machine. And plainly: no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, enquiries, order value or a customer's decision to buy a kitchen, and a supplier who quotes you a figure is selling. Ask for a retail scenting plan and send the room's dimensions.
Dry woods or dry green, nothing edible, and the lowest level in the cluster because the room is small and people sit in it for ninety minutes. One Sukoon at ₹1,899. A Vaayu would be the wrong buy.
For a single-room studio the machine is one SOSA Sukoon - ultrasonic cool mist, rated for roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances so you can try a register before you commit. ₹1,899, one machine, run on its lowest setting. Under about 300 sq ft, buy a ₹849 reed instead and run no schedule at all.

The machine for a single-room studio

Two honest answers for a consultation-led room, decided by its cubic volume rather than by ambition. The images link through to the product pages so you can check the specification before ordering.

SOSA Sukoon
A studio of about 300 to 600 sq ft
SOSA Sukoon
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml hotel-inspired fragrances. For a room that is mostly consultation table and sample wall this is the honest buy, and the three scents let you live with a register for a week before you settle on one.
From ₹1,899
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuser
Under about 300 sq ft, or if you want no schedule
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar in an alcohol-free, phthalate-free base with six fibre reeds. Dry woods that sit underneath timber and veneer rather than arguing with them. 50ml ₹849 lasts six to eight weeks, 130ml ₹1,349 lasts fourteen to eighteen. Flip the reeds weekly, and note that a bigger bottle buys months rather than metres.
From ₹849
SOSA Sukoon
The single-room machine, with the numbers that matter
SOSA Sukoon
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser rated for roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml hotel-inspired fragrances. Made in India, IFRA standards, phthalate-free. For a consultation studio it runs at the bottom of its intensity range rather than the top, which is the correct way round for a room where somebody is seated for ninety minutes.

The three things a consultation studio changes

A studio is not a smaller version of a showroom. Three things behave differently, and each of them moves the answer in the same direction.

1
Halve what you thought the level was
A small room and a long visit are the same problem twice
In a 2,000 sq ft showroom, output disperses into a large volume and most visitors are moving. In a 400 sq ft studio, the same output has far less air to spread through and the person receiving it has not moved for an hour. Those two facts do not add, they multiply, which is why a consultation studio takes the lowest setting of any room in this cluster. If your instinct is to set it where you would set a shop floor, halve that, then check it from the chair rather than the door. Almost nobody over-scents a studio deliberately; they do it by judging from the doorway.
Tip: Set it, then walk out for twenty minutes and come back before you decide.
SOSA Sukoon
One Sukoon ₹1,899, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

2
Refuse the edible instinct
The room is about kitchens; the air must not be
Every kitchen brief I receive contains a version of the same suggestion: something warm, something baked, something like a home with dinner on. It is the wrong instinct here for three separate reasons, any one of which is enough. A studio selling ₹5 to ₹10 lakh cabinetry that smells of vanilla reads as a bakery rather than as a design practice. If you ever cook in the space it competes directly with the real smell you staged on purpose. And a food note in a small room becomes cloying much faster than in a hall. Our own Fresh Brew, coffee and vanilla at ₹849, is the clearest example of what not to buy for this room.
Tip: If the note belongs on a menu, it does not belong in a design studio.

One Mountain Breeze reed diffuser ₹849, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

3
Put it anywhere but the table
Distance from the seated nose is your cheapest control
A small room does not give you much distance, so use all of it. The machine goes on the far side of the studio from the consultation table, roughly a metre off the floor, near where air enters rather than where it leaves, and never on the table, the sample wall or the credenza behind the customer's chair. Two metres of separation in a small room does more than any adjustment you can make on the dial. And anybody working in the studio must be able to switch it off in seconds without asking permission - if a customer at the table is uncomfortable, the correct response is off, immediately, and no discussion.

One Sukoon ₹1,899, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

The SOSA principle
A consultation studio is the only room in retail where the two variables that normally pull against each other - a small volume of air and a very long visit - both pull the level in the same direction, downwards.
Which makes it the easiest room in this cluster to specify and the easiest one to get wrong, because the mistake is made standing in the doorway.
SOSA Sukoon
The honest machine for one room: SOSA Sukoon covers roughly 270-320 sq ft and comes with three 15ml fragrances to try. ₹1,899.

The plan for one room

The whole studio brief as a plan, short enough to pin next to whoever opens up in the morning.

The SOSA plan
A consultation studio, decision by decision
The decision What to do
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuserThe register
Dry woods for a warm room, dry green or clean mineral for a white one. Nothing edible, in any studio, at any level.
SOSA SukoonThe machine
One Sukoon at ₹1,899 for 300 to 600 sq ft. Under 300 sq ft, a ₹849 reed. A Vaayu at ₹11,999 is the wrong buy for a single room.
The level
The lowest that is detectable walking in from outside, then judged again from the chair at minute ninety.
The placement
Far side of the room from the table, about a metre up, near where air enters. Never on or beside the table.
The off switch
Reachable by anyone working in the studio, in seconds, without asking. If a customer minds, it goes off.

The level itself is worked through in detail in how strong fragrance should be when customers spend sixty to ninety minutes choosing a kitchen, and if your studio grows into a showroom with a separate meeting room, the whole method sits in how to scent a kitchen studio without distracting customers during design consultations. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

SOSA Sukoon
No schedule, no machine: A Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849 gives a studio under 300 sq ft a steady, low baseline with nothing to switch on. Flip the reeds weekly.
One room, one small machine
SOSA Sukoon ₹1,899 covers roughly 270-320 sq ft and comes with three fragrances - which is the whole of what a consultation studio needs.

I have talked more people out of a machine in this room than in any other. A studio is one room with a table in it, and the honest number is ₹1,899.

The SOSA studio specification

One small machine covers a consultation studio, with a reed underneath it and the Vaayu waiting for the day the studio becomes a showroom with several volumes of air. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately, so if a rollout is in your plans, confirm continuity of supply with SOSA before committing. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Choose the register from what your samples and joinery are already doing, set the level from the consultation chair at minute ninety rather than from the doorway, and put the machine as far from the table as a small room allows. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like the lighting over your sample wall; it is never a mask for laminate, adhesive or new joinery, which need ventilation and curing time instead; and no one can promise you that scent moves a business number, so treat any supplier who offers you one as a salesman rather than an adviser. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

The first thing I usually have to do in this conversation is undo a quotation somebody else has already sent. A design studio owner writes to me having been quoted for a large commercial machine, and the room turns out to be four hundred square feet with a table, a sample wall and two chairs. That is not a scenting problem that needs eleven thousand rupees thrown at it. It is a room, and it needs the small machine, run low.

What makes a studio genuinely interesting is that it inverts the usual retail logic. In most shops you worry about reaching the far corner. Here you worry about the person who has not moved for an hour and a half, and every honest decision - the register, the level, where the machine sits - follows from that one seated customer rather than from the floor plan. Set it for them, ask the designers who sit there all week, and resist absolutely every suggestion that the room should smell of food.

On hardware: a Sukoon at ₹1,899, or a Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849 if the room is small and you would rather not run a schedule. The Vaayu at ₹11,999 is a good machine and it is not this machine. Fragrance is never a substitute for ventilation, nobody can promise you a commercial result, and if your studio is newly built you should trade unscented until the fit-out smell has gone. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best fragrance for a kitchen design consultation studio?
A dry, material-led register with nothing edible in it. Dry woods such as cedar, pine and sage suit a studio with warm joinery and veneer samples; a dry green, dry tea or clean mineral note suits a white and minimal room. Avoid vanilla, coffee, baking and warm spice entirely. SOSA's own Fresh Brew at Rs 849 is coffee and vanilla, and it is the clearest example of what not to put in this room.
Do I need a commercial machine for a consultation studio?
Usually not. A studio of 300 to 600 sq ft is one room, and the honest buy is a SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,899. A Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is rated to 1000m3, roughly seven times the air a studio holds, so it would run permanently at the bottom of its range. Under about 300 sq ft a Mountain Breeze reed at Rs 849 is a serious answer that needs no schedule at all.
How low should the setting be in a studio?
Lower than in any other room in this cluster. Customers sit at the table for sixty to ninety minutes and the fragrance keeps arriving for the whole of that time, so exposure compounds. Start at the lowest setting that is detectable when you walk in from the street, then sit at the table yourself for a full ninety minutes before deciding. Your designers breathe it all week and hold the only real measurement.
Where should the machine go in a small studio?
As far from the consultation table as the room allows, roughly a metre off the floor, near where air enters rather than where it leaves. Never on the table, the sample wall or the credenza behind a customer's chair. In a small room, distance from the seated nose does more than any change you can make on the dial, and anyone working there should be able to switch it off in seconds.
Will scenting my studio bring in more enquiries?
No one can promise that, and I will not. SOSA has run no research that would support a figure, and there is no honest way to separate ambient scent from the design work, the samples, the pricing and the designer's manner across a ninety-minute meeting. The useful question is whether the air agrees with what the studio is selling, which you can judge yourself from the chair.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation.
