How SOSA works
Two rungs, honestly: a spray you aim when you choose, or a cordless diffuser that decides for you
A note list is not a smell
Every description here is an intention written in words. It cannot tell you how an oil will sit on your own skin.
Alcohol-free by formulation
A jojoba carrier with no DPG and no ethanol. IFRA-compliant.
One dab, and do not rub it in
A pulse point and a dab applicator. Oil opens with warmth, so rubbing crushes the top of it.
Composed by a trained perfumer
Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained, composes the whole range.
A portion funds girl-child education
Part of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
We will tell you not to buy
There are four attars. Where your answer is not one of them, these guides say so and sell nothing.

This is the page the other nine in this block feed into, so it is the long one. You have three names, four note lists, a budget and a use in mind, and what you want is for somebody to say a word. I will. The procedure below takes about ten minutes, uses only information that is actually published, and ends in a name and a size rather than a shrug. It also tells you which shortlists have no answer here at all, because about a third of the shortlists I am sent name something we do not make, and the useful thing to do with those is say so in the first paragraph.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I decide which of three shortlisted attars to buy first? Five steps. Write your dealbreaker as one sentence. Score each note list against notes you have worn and liked, minus the ones you have rejected. Place the candidates on the published depth order, which for SOSA runs Adaa, Mastani, Ameeri, Nawaab, lightest to deepest. Grade your own uncertainty about each. Then buy the smallest size of the winner, which here is a 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399. Compatibility picks the name and uncertainty picks the size.

Which SOSA attar should a first-time buyer choose? Adaa, in a 3ml at ₹379, unless something in your own history points elsewhere. It is the lightest and shortest composition of the four - bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk - and the only one with a fresh opening, which makes it the least surprising introduction to wearing an oil. A first attar should be a small bet rather than a large one.

What if my shortlist is something SOSA does not make? Then that is the answer, and it applies to a lot of shortlists. There is no standalone white musk attar, no sandalwood attar, no amber attar, no khus or vetiver, no tuberose and no aquatic in this range - four compositions is the whole of it. Where the nearest thing we have would not satisfy the brief, the honest recommendation is to buy from a house that composes what you asked for.
The short answer
Short answer: Name your dealbreaker, score the note lists against what you already wear, place the candidates on the published depth order, then buy the smallest size of the winner. For most readers that is a 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399. Likely intensity cannot be part of the ranking, because no house publishes a measured projection figure, ours included.
The pick: A 3ml of whichever composition wins on compatibility. Adaa ₹379 for fresh and not sweet. Ameeri ₹385 for rose carried on sandalwood. Mastani ₹389 for a darker, more floral rose. Nawaab ₹399 for the nine-note oud. If you will not choose, the trio of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani is ₹1,055 at 3ml.
Honest note: an attar is bought unsmelled, so a list of notes is all you have. A note list describes an intention, not a smell, and nothing written here is a substitute for wearing it.
Four attars - lightest opening to deepest baseAdaa · Mastani · Ameeri · Nawaab3ml from ₹379  |  6ml from ₹669  |  12ml from ₹1,149Dab on pulse points - oil wants warmth, not rubbing6-8 hours on skin · alcohol-free · DPG-free carrier
There are four SOSA attars and they run from a bergamot-and-cardamom opening at the lightest end to white royal oud at the deepest. Adaa is the freshest, Mastani the most floral, Ameeri the warmest, Nawaab the deepest. All four are alcohol-free on a jojoba carrier with no DPG, come with a dab applicator, and wear 6-8 hours on skin - longer on warm or oily skin. Sizes are 3ml, 6ml and 12ml, from Rs 379. None of that tells you whether you will like the smell, which is why the smallest size exists.
Straight answer
I have three attars shortlisted and a budget. Which one should I actually buy first?
Run these five steps in order. They end in a name and a size.

Step one: write your dealbreaker down before you read anything. One sentence, in your own words, finishing "I will not wear anything that ___". Sweet. Powdery. Heavy oud. A loud floral in front. A dealbreaker eliminates faster than a preference selects, and most three-name shortlists lose a name at this step without any further work. If you cannot finish the sentence, you are not ready to buy anything yet and no page can fix that for you.

Step two: score the note lists against your own history. List the notes you can name in fragrances you have worn and liked, then the notes you can name in things you bought and abandoned. Plus one for each note on the first list, minus two for each note on the second, zero for anything you have never knowingly worn. The weighting is deliberately unfair to the things you have already rejected, because rejection is the stronger evidence. The full scoring method, and the two axes nobody can rank, are set out here.

Step three: place each candidate on the depth order. Depth is published and comparable, which makes it the only structural ranking available to you. Ours runs Adaa, Mastani, Ameeri, Nawaab, lightest to deepest. Ask what depth your intended use is reaching for and use it as a tie-breaker when two candidates score the same. Use it knowingly: it is a description of composition, not a strength rating.

Step four: grade your uncertainty, and let it set the size rather than the name. Low if you have worn this family and liked it. Medium if you know the family but not this shape. High if you have never knowingly worn anything like it. High uncertainty is not a reason to drop a candidate. It is the reason the 3ml exists.

Step five: buy the smallest size of the winner and nothing else. A 3ml is ₹379 for Adaa, ₹385 Ameeri, ₹389 Mastani, ₹399 Nawaab. Wear it for a week. If it is yours, a 6ml is ₹669 to ₹699 and a 12ml is ₹1,149 to ₹1,199, and both will still be there. Why the smallest size first is the right move even when the big bottle is better value per millilitre.

The four compositions, in full, because the method needs them. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk - the only fresh opening in the range and the lightest of the four. Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose and oudh - the darker, more floral rose. Ameeri is rose, sandalwood, saffron and a soft oudh - rose carried on wood, the second deepest. Nawaab is oud, sandalwood, saffron, black pepper, cardamom, aged tobacco leaf, amber, leather and white musk - nine notes and the deepest thing we make. All four are alcohol-free on a jojoba carrier with no DPG, IFRA-compliant, hand-blended in small batches in Pune, with a dab applicator, and all four are published at 6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin. That last figure is the same for all of them, which means it cannot separate your shortlist.

The eight shortlists I am actually sent, and the answer to each. Musk against sandalwood for the office: neither exists standalone here, the real comparison is Adaa against Ameeri, and a reader who dislikes sweetness wants Adaa - the long version is here. Rose-oud against saffron-amber for evening: a genuine three-way, and if the condition is no floral sweetness the answer is Nawaab - set out here. Jasmine-musk against rose-sandalwood: Adaa, because rose on a creamy wood is the classic powdery pairing - here. Khus against vetiver: we make neither, and that page sells nothing - here. Masculine-leaning without heavy oud: Adaa, with Ameeri as the warm alternative - here. White musk, amber musk or sandalwood for daily wear: all three are base accords and none is a product here, and the daily answer is Adaa - here. A thousand-rupee oud against a fifteen-hundred sandalwood: that is a size gap, not a grade gap, because both numbers sit either side of the 12ml tier - here. Traditional rose against a modern rose oil: Ameeri for the traditional reading, Mastani for the darker floral one - here.

What your budget buys, checked against the list. ₹500 buys one 3ml with change. ₹1,000 buys two 3mls, which is the best ₹1,000 anybody with a two-name shortlist can spend. ₹1,500 buys a 12ml of any of the four with change. ₹2,000 buys a 12ml and a 3ml. ₹3,000 buys the 6ml trio at ₹1,859 with change. The 3ml trio is ₹1,055 and the 12ml trio is ₹3,189.

And the answer for most people who read this far. Buy a 3ml of whichever composition won step two. If nothing won step two because every candidate scored zero, you have no history to go on, and in that case buy a 3ml of Adaa at ₹379, because it is the lightest, shortest and least surprising composition in the range and a first oil should be a small bet. And if your shortlist names a musk attar, a sandalwood attar, an amber attar, a khus, a vetiver, a tuberose or an aquatic, the answer is that we do not make it, and I would rather send you to a house that does than take the order. A note list is not a smell. Everything on this page helps you choose better and none of it is a substitute for wearing it.
Five steps: dealbreaker, compatibility score, depth order, uncertainty grade, smallest size. Output is a name and a size. For most readers the answer is a 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399, and for about a third of shortlists the answer is that we do not make what was asked for.
Start at 3ml. A 3ml costs ₹379 to ₹399 depending on the composition, holds the same liquid as the larger sizes, and is the only honest size for a fragrance you have never worn. Wear it for a week before you buy a size. Nothing on this page can tell you how it will smell on your skin, which is exactly why the smallest bottle exists.
3ml from ₹379

The five steps, and the three that do most of the work

Three of the five steps decide almost every shortlist. Do these three properly and the other two take a minute each.

1
Dealbreaker
One sentence, written before you read any note list
Finish "I will not wear anything that ___" in your own words. Sweet, powdery, heavy oud, a loud floral in front. A dealbreaker eliminates faster than a preference selects, and most three-name shortlists lose a name here without any further work. If you cannot finish the sentence, you are not ready to buy yet, and no amount of reading substitutes for knowing what you refuse.
Tip: Write the sentence down, then read the note lists against it.
2
History
Score the lists against what you have already worn
Plus one for every note you can name in something you have worn and liked, minus two for every note in something you bought and abandoned, zero for anything unfamiliar. The asymmetry is deliberate, because a rejected note has already been tested on your skin and failed. Four minutes of this beats a week of reading descriptions, and it uses the only evidence that was collected on you.
Tip: The rejection list is the one that saves you money.
3
Size
Uncertainty decides the bottle, never the name
Once the winner is picked, the only question left is how much of it to buy, and that is set by how familiar the composition is to you rather than by how confident the page sounded. Never worn anything like it means a 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399, not a 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199. A lower price per millilitre on something you may not reach for is a worse deal rather than a better one.
Tip: High uncertainty, smallest bottle. Every time.
The SOSA principle
About a third of the shortlists I am sent name something we do not make. The useful thing to do with those is say so in the first paragraph rather than the last.
No musk attar, no sandalwood attar, no amber attar, no khus, no vetiver, no tuberose, no aquatic. Four compositions is the whole range.

The four, and which shortlist each one answers

Adaa answers the fresh, not-sweet, daily and lightest-in-the-range briefs, and it is the answer to more shortlists in this block than any other bottle: bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk, 3ml ₹379. Ameeri answers the sandalwood and traditional rose briefs, with rose and saffron carried on sandalwood over a soft oudh, 3ml ₹385.

The SOSA attar range
Each step, and what it decides
Option When it is the right call
Step one and two: dealbreaker and history Picks the name · uses only your own experience
Limit: It needs you to be honest about what you abandoned, which most people skip
Step three: depth order Breaks ties · published and comparable · Adaa, Mastani, Ameeri, Nawaab
Limit: It describes structure rather than strength, and occasion fit is a convention on top of it
Step four and five: uncertainty and size Picks the bottle · 3ml ₹379 to ₹399
Limit: Less oil in the house, which is the correct trade before you have worn anything
Anything we do not make No musk, sandalwood, amber, khus, vetiver, tuberose or aquatic attar
Limit: None. If that is your shortlist, buy from a house that composes it

Mastani answers the rose-oud and darker-floral briefs with night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose and oudh, 3ml ₹389. Nawaab answers the saffron-amber, no-floral and something-genuinely-different briefs with nine notes around oud, leather and tobacco leaf, 3ml ₹399. If none of those four sentences is your brief, the honest answer is that the range does not contain your attar.

Not sure which of the four is yours?
Tell us the three fragrances you wear most and the notes you cannot stand. If none of our four fits what you describe, we will say so rather than sell you a bottle you will not wear.
Ask first
The output of a good shortlist method is a name and a size, not a verdict. Uncertainty never changes the name - it only ever changes the size.

The SOSA attar range

Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant on a jojoba carrier with no DPG, hand-blended in small batches in Pune. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. There are four, and the honest way to read them is by depth - how much the base note is doing.

The SOSA attar range
Four attars, lightest to deepest - 3ml from ₹379
Attar Built on What it is, honestly 3ml
Adaa Bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk The lightest of the four and the easiest first attar. Jasmine sambac is mogra, so this is also the mogra answer ₹379
Ameeri Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh The warm one. Rose and sandalwood doing most of the work, with the oudh kept soft ₹385
Mastani Night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, oudh The most floral. A different jasmine and a different rose from Adaa and Ameeri ₹389
Nawaab White royal oud, sandalwood, saffron, tobacco leaf, amber, leather The deepest in the range. Not a first attar unless you already know you like oud ₹399
The trio Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani together Three of the four at once. The honest answer when you cannot choose and will not guess ₹1,055

Four honest notes. A note list is not a smell. Every composition above is described in the words we would use ourselves, and those words still cannot tell you how it will sit on your skin - which is the whole reason the 3ml exists. On the sizes: 3ml, 6ml and 12ml are the same liquid, and the only reason to buy the larger ones is that you already know. If you have not worn it, buy the smallest and let it earn the upgrade. On wear: all four are 6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, and that is the only figure we publish. We do not publish a drop count, a per-application cost, or a comparison with how long anybody else's fragrance lasts - including sprays. On what we do not make: there is no standalone musk, sandalwood, amber, tuberose, vetiver, khus, aquatic or tobacco attar in this range. Four compositions is the whole range, and where your answer is not one of them, this page will say so rather than talk you into the nearest thing.

A note from Sonal

Attars are the part of this business where the marketing is worst, and I would like ours to be the boring, accurate version. Most of the category sells a bottle on adjectives - royal, exotic, hypnotic, long-lasting - and on numbers nobody has measured. You cannot smell any of it before you pay, so the words are doing all the work, and almost nobody writes them honestly.

So here is what I will and will not tell you. I will tell you what is in each of the four, in the order you meet it, and that they wear 6-8 hours on my skin. I will not tell you that one of them smells expensive, or that it will turn heads, or that it lasts twelve hours, because I cannot know the first two about you and have not measured the third. The honest sequence is: read the notes, buy the 3ml, wear it for a week, and only then buy a size. If none of our four matches what you have described to yourself, I would rather say so than sell you the nearest one.

The other thing worth knowing is how little you need. An attar is concentrated oil, and the commonest mistake is wearing it like a spray - a long press at the neck and another at the wrists. One dab at a pulse point is the dose. Two if you want it read across a dinner table. Do not rub it in; oil opens with warmth, and rubbing crushes the top of it. That is the entire dial, and most people never need the top of it. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

Which SOSA attar should I buy first?
A 3ml of whichever of the four scores best against the notes you already wear and like. If nothing in your history points anywhere, Adaa at Rs 379: the lightest and shortest composition of the four, with the only fresh opening in the range. Not a 12ml, and not on the strength of a note list alone.
What does each size cost?
A 3ml is Rs 379 for Adaa, Rs 385 Ameeri, Rs 389 Mastani and Rs 399 Nawaab. A 6ml is Rs 669, Rs 679, Rs 685 and Rs 699 in the same order. A 12ml is Rs 1,149, Rs 1,165, Rs 1,179 and Rs 1,199. The trio of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani is Rs 1,055 at 3ml; Rs 1,859 at 6ml; Rs 3,189 at 12ml. Confirm all of it on the live product page before you order, because an article is the wrong place to read a price from.
Is the trio a better way to decide?
Only if you genuinely will not choose. Three 3ml bottles of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani for Rs 1,055 is three of the four compositions for a little over the price of three singles, which is good value if you will wear all three and poor value if you already know which family you want. Most readers who have done the scoring properly only need one bottle.
Can you rank the four by strength or projection?
No. There is no standardised projection or wear test in this category, we do not run one, and nobody publishes a measured figure, ourselves included. Our one published figure is 6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, and it is the same for all four attars. What is rankable is composition depth, which runs Adaa, Mastani, Ameeri, Nawaab.
What if none of the four is right for me?
Then buy nothing from us, and I mean that. There is no standalone musk, sandalwood or amber attar here, no khus, no vetiver, no tuberose and no aquatic. Four compositions is the whole range. Tell us what you wear now and what you refuse, and we will say which of the four fits or that none of them does.

About this guide:
  • Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the fragrance-family guidance applies to any brand. SOSA does not sort fragrance by the gender of the wearer.

What this guide does not claim.
  • An attar is a fragrance and nothing else.
A note list is not a smell
  • - it names what a composition is built from and the order you meet it in, which is a description of an intention rather than a measurement, and it is
not a substitute for wearing it
  • . Nothing here should be read as advice about health, allergies or anyone's wellbeing, and no fragrance on this page is claimed to affect anybody's mood, comfort, confidence or state of mind. Where a reader describes a preference none of our four compositions matches, these guides say so and sell nothing.

SOSA attars, specified:
  • four compositions -
Adaa
  • (bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk),
Ameeri
  • (Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh),
Mastani
  • (night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, oudh) and
Nawaab
  • (white royal oud, sandalwood, saffron, black pepper, cardamom, aged tobacco leaf, amber, leather, white musk). All four are
alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant on a jojoba carrier with no DPG
  • , supplied with a built-in dab applicator, and hand-blended in small batches in Pune. Sizes are
3ml, 6ml and 12ml
  • : Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179, Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199. The three-attar trio (Ameeri, Nawaab, Mastani) is ₹1,055 / ₹1,859 / ₹3,189. The same liquid fills all three sizes.

On wear.
  • SOSA publishes one figure:
6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin
  • . SOSA does not publish a drop count, a cost per application, a projection rating, or any comparison with how long another format or another company's fragrance lasts. Where a customer review reports a different number, that is one person's experience of their own skin and not a measurement SOSA stands behind.

On what is in the bottle.
  • The composition lists above name the materials a fragrance is built from. They are not a statement of grade, percentage or geographic origin, and this guide makes no claim about either. Where origin or grade matters to you, ask before you buy - that is a fair question and the answer belongs to the product page rather than to an article.

On other companies.
  • Where another fragrance brand is named in these guides it is because a reader named it, and the page answers what they asked. Nothing here states what any other company's product contains, how long it lasts, what it costs or how it performs.
Other brands named are the property of their respective owners · SOSA is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or associated with any other fragrance company named on this page
  • , and no other company has reviewed or approved this content. If a product you already own suits you, keep it - several pages in this guide say exactly that.

On availability.
  • SOSA is an online fragrance house and ships across India; it holds no retail counters, and no delivery window is quoted here. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Prices and availability change - see the live product pages.
