The usual comparison between an attar and a perfume is about longevity or value, which misses the thing that actually matters for a gift. An attar is a private fragrance: it stays within an arm's length and is experienced mainly by the person wearing it. A sprayed perfume is a public one: it enters a lift, an office, a car full of colleagues. Choosing a public fragrance on somebody else's behalf is a much bigger thing to do.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the real difference between an attar and a perfume? Reach. An attar has no alcohol carrier, so it sits within an arm's length and is largely private. A sprayed perfume is projected into shared air and is experienced by everybody near the wearer.

Why does that matter for a gift? Because choosing a public fragrance for somebody else decides what a room full of their colleagues smells. An attar only affects the wearer, which makes it a far smaller thing to choose on their behalf.

Which should I give? An attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399 for anybody you do not know precisely. A sprayed eau de parfum at Rs 599 when you know their taste well - it is a lovely gift in that case.
The short answer
Short answer: An attar has no alcohol carrier, so it stays within an arm's length and is largely private; a sprayed perfume is projected into shared air. Choosing a public fragrance on somebody's behalf decides what a room of their colleagues smells, which is a far bigger thing to do. Attars Rs 379 to Rs 399 for anybody you do not know precisely; eau de parfum Rs 599 when you do.
The pick: a SOSA return gift - consumable, no shelf space, from ₹299 a head.

A return gift succeeds when a guest uses it rather than leaves it in the car. Fragrance is consumable, needs no shelf and suits a guest list you only half know. SOSA return gifts start at Rs 299, and bulk quantities are quoted on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.
Straight answer
Should I give an attar or a perfume as a Diwali return gift?
An attar for almost anybody, and a sprayed perfume only for somebody whose taste you know. The reason is reach rather than quality. An attar has no alcohol carrier, so the oil warms on skin and releases slowly - it sits within an arm's length and is experienced mainly by the wearer. A sprayed eau de parfum at ₹599 is projected into shared air: a lift, an office, a car full of colleagues. Choosing a public fragrance on somebody else's behalf is a much bigger thing to do than choosing a private one. Adaa ₹379, Ameeri ₹385, Mastani ₹389, Nawaab ₹399, all 12ml and alcohol-free - and a 12ml bottle lasts months, because it is applied in tiny quantities. Quantities quoted on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.
An attar is private and a perfume is public. Rs 379 to Rs 399 for anybody; a Rs 599 spray only when you know their taste.
If you want one answer for a mixed guest list: hanging car perfume from ₹449, because almost every adult guest drives and almost nobody has done anything about their car. Bulk quantities quoted on WhatsApp.

One is a private fragrance and one is a public one

Comparisons between these two formats usually run through longevity, projection and value per millilitre, and all of that is true and none of it settles a gifting decision. The distinction that does is about who else is involved. Consider what happens when somebody wears each of them. An attar is undiluted perfume oil applied as a roll-on. There is no alcohol, and alcohol is the thing in a conventional perfume that throws the composition into the air - it evaporates fast and carries aromatic molecules with it, which is why a spray fills a room within seconds. Without it, the oil warms on skin and releases slowly, so the fragrance occupies a small radius. Somebody sitting next to the wearer might notice it; somebody across a meeting room will not. It is, for practical purposes, a private fragrance. A sprayed eau de parfum is the opposite by design. It is built to project, and the good ones do it well - which means the wearer is not the only person who experiences it. Everybody in the lift, the meeting, the car and the queue does. That is not a criticism; it is what the format is for, and plenty of people want exactly that. But it changes what you are doing when you choose one for somebody else. Give a friend an attar and you have offered them a private experience they can take or leave. Give them a sprayed perfume and you have made a suggestion about what a room full of their colleagues should smell like tomorrow morning. That is a larger claim, and it is why the format feels slightly presumptuous when the giver does not know the recipient well - the discomfort people feel about it is real and correctly located. This single difference explains most of the practical guidance. For a return gift, where you typically know very little about the person, the attar is the appropriate skin fragrance and the spray is not. For a close friend whose taste you can describe accurately, the spray becomes a genuinely lovely gift, because the presumption is no longer presumption - you know. There are four supporting differences worth knowing. The first is familiarity. In India an attar is not a novelty; most adults have encountered one at a wedding, at Eid, at a dargah or on a relative's dressing table, so there is no learning curve and no sense of being handed something fashionable. A solid perfume, by contrast, is a good product that a proportion of any guest list will turn over twice wondering what to do with. The second is longevity per millilitre. An attar is applied in tiny quantities and nothing evaporates off, so a 12ml bottle lasts months of regular use - whereas 12ml of eau de parfum is a sample. This is the reason smallness in this format reads as concentration rather than economy, which is the inverse of the usual size instinct and why a Rs 379 bottle looks more expensive than it is. The third is context. An attar works where a spray does not: an office with people close together, a temple, a long flight, a hot afternoon when strong sillage is the last thing anybody wants. It can also be layered under or over something else as a warm base. That breadth of use makes it more likely to be used rather than stored, which is the real test of a return gift. The fourth is the failure cost. If somebody dislikes an attar you gave them, they wear it once and stop, and nobody else was ever affected. If somebody dislikes a sprayed perfume you gave them, they have either to waste it or to wear something they do not like in public - and in practice it goes on a shelf, which for a woman is likely to be a shelf with three other bottles on it already. The range, for completeness. Attars: Adaa at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees, bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk - the most broadly wearable of the four. Ameeri at three hundred and eighty-five, Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, which reads classical rather than floral in an Indian context and lands across genders. Mastani at three hundred and eighty-nine, night jasmine and Damask rose, the richest floral. Nawaab at three hundred and ninety-nine, a white oud composition with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron - described that way deliberately, because it is not a dehn al oud distillate and anybody who knows the category would spot a loose claim. Above them the Attar Trio at one thousand and fifty-five rupees, three presented together, which hands the recipient a preference rather than your verdict. Sprayed: the Inspired By range from five hundred and ninety-nine rupees, covering six registers - Tabac Noir in tobacco and vanilla, Khayaal in sparkling bergamot and neroli, Samundar aquatic marine, Bahaar in English pear and freesia, Zaffran in saffron and sweet amber, Chashni sweet fruity gourmand. These are SOSA's own interpretations of well-known registers rather than the originals, and SOSA is not affiliated with the houses that made them - which is worth saying to the recipient as well as on a page, because somebody who knows fragrance will recognise the reference and would rather hear it from you. One structural note. If the choice feels difficult because you like the person and cannot read their taste, the answer is usually not to pick harder but to change the shape of the gift. Three attars hand over a preference; one bottle hands over a verdict. And if you know almost nothing at all, a fragrance addressed to a space rather than a person removes the question entirely - a hanging car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine rupees assumes nothing about anybody. On quantity: there is no published bulk rate, minimum order or lead time, because the right number depends on quantity, mix and date. Send those three on WhatsApp and it comes back in writing.

1
The difference
Private radius versus shared air
Alcohol is what throws a composition into the air, so without it an attar warms on skin and occupies a small radius - noticed by somebody sitting next to the wearer and not by somebody across a room. A spray is built to project, and does.
2
Why it decides the gift
A public fragrance is a bigger thing to choose for somebody
Give an attar and you have offered a private experience they can take or leave. Give a sprayed perfume and you have made a suggestion about what a room full of their colleagues should smell like tomorrow. The discomfort people feel about that is real and correctly located.
Tip: For a close friend whose taste you can describe, the presumption disappears - and the spray becomes a lovely gift.
3
Failure cost
One is wearable once and forgotten; the other is a shelf
Dislike an attar and you wear it once and stop, and nobody else was ever affected. Dislike a sprayed perfume and you either waste it or wear something you do not like in public - so it goes on a shelf that probably has three bottles on it already.
Tip: And 12ml of attar lasts months, where 12ml of eau de parfum is a sample.
The SOSA principle
Give an attar and you have offered somebody a private experience. Give a spray and you have suggested what a room full of their colleagues should smell like.
That is a larger thing to decide on somebody else's behalf, and people feel it even when they cannot name it.

Why that decides the gift

The four attars and the sprayed range, with the rule attached. Below about the level of knowing somebody's register confidently, the attar is the right skin fragrance. Above it, the spray becomes genuinely good. And if you cannot read them at all, a trio hands over a preference rather than a verdict.

The SOSA scent edit
Private, public, and the way out
Scent Why it suits the mood
Attars ₹379 to ₹399 Undiluted oil, no alcohol carrier, an arm's length of reach - private, forgiving and culturally familiar. Adaa, Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab, the last a white oud composition rather than a distillate.
Eau de parfum ₹599 Built to project, so it enters lifts, offices and cars. A lovely gift for somebody whose register you can describe accurately, and presumptuous for anybody else.
Attar Trio ₹1,055 The way out when you like somebody and cannot read their taste - three bottles hand over a preference where one hands over a verdict.
Car fragrance ₹449 And if you know almost nothing, a fragrance addressed to a space removes the question altogether, because it assumes nothing about the person at all.

A note from Sonal

Return gifts fail in a way everybody has experienced from both sides. You spend real money across fifty guests, and a fortnight later most of it is in a drawer or a kitchen cupboard. The test I use is not what it cost per head - it is whether it will be finished. A box of mithai is finished in four days and forgotten. A decorative object is never finished at all.

Fragrance sits in a useful middle. It gets used up over weeks or months, it needs no shelf space, and it works for a guest list you only half know - which is the real condition of a Diwali party, where you know twenty people well and forty barely at all. Car fragrance in particular has the widest hit rate we see, because almost every adult guest drives and almost nobody has thought about what their car smells like.

One honest note about bulk. We do not publish a bulk rate, a minimum order or a lead time on a blog page, because those depend on the quantity, the mix and the date, and a number written in an article is a number that will be wrong by the time somebody reads it. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your guest count, per-head budget and date and we will put a written quote against it - including when the honest answer is that a price point is not worth doing. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

Should I give an attar or a perfume as a return gift?
An attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399 for anybody whose taste you do not know precisely, and a sprayed eau de parfum at Rs 599 only when you do - in which case it becomes a genuinely lovely gift.
What is the real difference between them?
Reach. An attar has no alcohol carrier, so the oil warms on skin and releases slowly, staying within an arm's length. A sprayed perfume is built to project and is experienced by everybody near the wearer.
Why does reach matter for a gift?
Because choosing a public fragrance for somebody decides what a room full of their colleagues smells like tomorrow. An attar only affects the wearer, which is a far smaller thing to decide on somebody else's behalf.
How long does 12ml of attar last?
Months of regular use, because it is applied in tiny quantities with a roll-on and nothing evaporates off - where 12ml of sprayed eau de parfum would be a sample.
What if I cannot read somebody's taste at all?
Change the shape of the gift rather than guessing harder. The Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 hands over a preference, and a hanging car perfume at Rs 449 removes the question entirely by addressing a space rather than a person.
