I make reed diffusers, and I also live with animals, so this is the question I get asked most by cat owners. The honest answer is more careful than a yes or a no. Cats are not small dogs and they are not small humans; their liver processes some compounds very differently, which is why I would never hand you a blanket safety guarantee for any specific cat.

Are reed diffusers safe to use around cats?
I will not give you a blanket yes, because I cannot verify what is safe for your particular cat. What I can tell you honestly is this: a reed diffuser releases a low, steady amount of scent into the air, and in a ventilated room that is usually well tolerated. The real danger is not the smell, it is the liquid. Reed diffuser oil is a fragrance concentrate in a carrier; it is not meant to be ingested, and if a curious cat knocks the bottle over and licks the spill, that is where harm can happen. Cats are also more sensitive than people or dogs to certain fragrance and essential-oil compounds. So the safe approach is about placement and supervision, not a product promise. Why cats are different from the rest of the household
A cat is not built like you or like a dog when it comes to processing scent compounds. Their liver lacks some of the enzyme pathways that other mammals use to break certain substances down, which means things that pass harmlessly through us can build up in a cat. This is well documented for some essential oils in particular, and it is exactly why I refuse to wave a generic safety flag over any home fragrance and call it cat-proof.
A reed diffuser scents a room by capillary action: the reeds draw the fragrance liquid up and the surface of the reeds lets it evaporate slowly into the air. It does not heat, burn, or atomise anything, so the airborne dose is gentle and gradual rather than a concentrated mist.
That gentle, low airborne dose is the reassuring part. The part I want you to take seriously is the bottle of liquid sitting there. To a cat it is a small vessel of something interesting, and cats climb, nudge, and explore with their mouths. A reed diffuser that is perfectly fine humming away on a high shelf becomes a hazard the moment it is on a low table a cat can reach.
Scent is not purification. A diffuser adds fragrance to the air; it does not clean it. Around a sensitive animal, less and well-ventilated almost always beats more and enclosed.
How I would place a diffuser in a home with cats
Here is the practical, honest routine I would follow, and the one I give friends with cats.
Place it where a cat cannot reach or topple it. A high shelf, a closed-off room, or a surface with nothing for a cat to climb onto. The single biggest risk you can remove is the spill.
Ventilate the room. A door ajar or a window cracked keeps the scent from concentrating. Never run a diffuser in a small, sealed space a cat is shut into.
Start with fewer reeds. If your cat seems bothered, pawing its face, sneezing, leaving the room, pull reeds out to lower the throw, or move the diffuser elsewhere.
Wipe any spill immediately and keep the cat away from it until the surface is clean and dry. Store refills sealed and out of reach.
Myth: alcohol-free means cat-safe. It does not. Alcohol-free is about the carrier and the smell, not about whether a fragrance concentrate is safe for a cat to ingest. No reputable maker can promise the latter without veterinary context.
I would rather lose a sale than have you assume our reeds are cleared for cats. They are alcohol-free, which I think makes for a calmer, cleaner scent in the room, and that is the honest extent of what I will claim.
