By Sonal Sahani, Founder & Perfumer at SOSA Home & Body
This is one of the most common questions I get, and the good news is it has a clean answer. Amber and oud are the two great warm-luxury directions, but they feel different on skin. Tell me which feeling you want and I will point you to the exact bottle.
Quick answer
Want a
warm, golden glow? Choose
Zaffran, our saffron sweet-amber, ₹599 for 10ml. Want
dark, woody depth? Choose
Nawaab, our white royal oud attar, ₹399 for 3ml. Warm-glow equals amber; woody-depth equals oud.
The pick
"Amber or oud, which one is right for me?"
If you want warmth and glow, buy Zaffran (₹599, 10ml). If you want dark, sophisticated woods, buy Nawaab (₹399, 3ml). The decision is genuinely that simple: warmth versus woods.
What each one actually feels like
Amber is warmth. It is golden, resinous and softly sweet, the smell of sun-warmed skin, honey and balsam. It reads cosy, luminous and expensive, and it wraps close to you. Zaffran layers saffron and jasmine over that amber for a rich, unisex glow.
Oud is wood. Agarwood oil is deep, dark and serious, with a gravity that amber does not have. It reads sophisticated and grown-up. Nawaab is my white royal oud attar, built with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, a clean, modern oud rather than a smoky, rustic one.

On honesty and how they wear
Zaffran is SOSA's own interpretation inspired by Baccarat Rouge 540. SOSA is an independent house and is not affiliated with or endorsed by these brands. Nawaab is a SOSA original, my own clean, modern take on royal oud. Neither is smoky or aggressive: if you have been scared off oud by a harsh, medicinal, barnyard version somewhere, Nawaab is deliberately the opposite, smooth and refined.
One practical difference: Nawaab is a traditional attar, so it sits especially close to the skin, a foot or two. That is a genuine feature for the office, meetings and close company, where you never want to be the person smelt across the room. Zaffran, as a perfume oil, opens a touch more. Both realistically last eight to ten-plus hours.
Can you have both?
Yes, and many amber-and-oud lovers do. Amber and oud actually pair beautifully, the warmth softening the wood. But if this is your one purchase, do not overthink it: pick the feeling. Warm and glowing, go amber with Zaffran. Dark and woody, go oud with Nawaab. You can always come back for the other.
Still unsure?
If you cannot decide, I would nudge a first-time buyer toward Zaffran, because warm amber is the more universally loved, easy-to-wear direction. Save Nawaab for when you know you are drawn to woods specifically. There is no wrong answer here, only the one that suits the mood you want to wear.

Founder note
People think amber and oud are rivals. To me they are two moods. Zaffran is the warm evening in, Nawaab is the sharp evening out. I made both because I refuse to choose, and honestly, most of my customers end up owning the pair.
Frequently asked questions
Amber or oud, which fragrance should I choose?
Choose amber if you want a warm, golden, sweet-glowing scent that reads cosy and expensive; that is Zaffran, ₹599 for 10ml. Choose oud if you want dark, woody, sophisticated depth with more gravity; that is Nawaab, ₹399 for 3ml. Warm-glow means amber, woody-depth means oud.
What is the difference between amber and oud?
Amber is a warm resinous accord, honeyed, golden and close to sweet. Oud is agarwood oil, a deep, dark, woody note with real gravity. Amber feels like warmth and skin, oud feels like precious wood. They can even be worn together, but if you must pick one, decide whether you want warmth or woods.
Is oud stronger or heavier than amber?
Oud usually reads darker and more serious, and amber reads warmer and softer, but neither has to be heavy. Nawaab is a clean, modern oud that sits close to the skin rather than overwhelming, and Zaffran is a warm amber that glows rather than shouts. Both are refined, not aggressive.
Can a beginner wear oud, or should I start with amber?
Both are beginner-friendly in the versions I make. If you are new to fragrance and want something easy and universally liked, start with the warm amber of Zaffran. If you are specifically drawn to woods and want to explore oud, Nawaab is the cleanest, most modern first oud you can pick.
Which lasts longer, amber Zaffran or oud Nawaab?
Both are concentrated oils that realistically last eight to ten-plus hours. Nawaab, being a traditional attar, sits especially close to the skin, which is a feature for office and close settings. Zaffran, a perfume oil, projects a little more openly. Longevity is similar; the difference is how close each wears.
